What Subaru did differently
Very little mechanically, though the two makers tuned the suspension differently at launch and the BRZ was generally the more settled of the pair. Subaru also built both cars, which surprises people.

These cars have modest grip by design and reward being smooth. You cannot be smooth while holding yourself in place with your arms, which is the honest case for a shell in a car that is not especially fast.
