Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Volkswagen Golf Mk6, including our fitting guide

VW spent longer refining the Mk6 than any Golf before it. Quieter cabin, tighter panel gaps, a dash that finally felt worth the badge, and the result is a car a lot of owners are still happy to use every day, years after buying it. That refinement cuts both ways though. Because the Mk6 never feels rough, it is easy to keep driving it hard on a factory seat that was built around a motorway commute, not a B-road at 8pm on a Friday. The bolsters give up long before the rest of the car does, whether you are in a 1.6 diesel doing the school run or a Golf R putting four-wheel drive through a roundabout.

We see this car from both ends of that range. GTI owners want a seat that will not punish a two-hour motorway trip. Golf R owners who have already sorted the drivetrain want something that will not let go when the four-wheel drive system is asking real questions of the tyres. Cameron works out the fit for both, seat by seat, car by car.

  • Three frame routes in stock for the Golf Mk6: Cobra, Sparco and Planted Technology
  • Cobra frames take 291mm pattern seats, Sparco frames 345mm, Planted takes both plus the wider 405mm pattern
  • Every seat in this guide is listed as 4 point harness compatible
  • All three routes bolt to the factory mounting points, no drilling on a standard floor

The Mk6 Golf R. The frame you pick decides which of the five seats below can go in it.

The three frame routes into a Golf Mk6

We stock a fitting frame for the Mk6 from all three of the brands we rate. A frame is the vehicle specific base that bolts to the floor in place of the standard runners, and it sets your final seat height and how far back you can sit. Which one you buy decides which seats you can run, so this choice comes first.

291

Cobra subframe

Part SU-VW-GO6, £255.00 inc VAT. Priced and sold per seat, so a pair means two in the basket. Takes the Cobra Stuttgart Signature and the Corbeau.

345

Sparco subframe

Part 00499070-Golf-Mk6, £93.60 inc VAT a side. RHD driver and passenger listed separately, both in stock. Takes the R100, the R333 and the Corbeau.

ANY

Planted bracket

Part SB029-4892, £222.60 inc VAT a side, RHD driver and passenger. A flat base that takes any seat in this guide, paired with runners matching that seat's pattern.

The number that decides it

Every reclining seat we sell bolts down through a base mount pattern, and there are three that matter on this car. Sparco recliners use 345mm x 271mm, matched to the Sparco subframe. Cobra recliners use 291mm x 330mm, matched to the Cobra subframe. The Bride EUROSTER II uses a wider 405mm x 290mm pattern that neither subframe touches. The Corbeau Sportline RRS Elite is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, so it bolts straight to either subframe as well as the Planted bracket. For the Bride, the Planted bracket with a matching runner is the only route we sell on this car.

Pick the seat firstThen buy the frame route that matches its pattern. The Corbeau keeps every route open if you have not settled on a seat, and the Planted bracket keeps every seat open if you have not settled on a frame. Working out that combination for a given car and driver is most of what I do at GSM, so ask if you are stuck between two.

Sparco R100: the everyday value pick

The R100 is the recliner we sell more of than anything else in this guide, and it has gone into an enormous range of road and track cars over the years, which tells you most of what you need to know about how forgiving the shape actually is. The frame is tubular steel at 13kg, honest weight for a steel-framed seat rather than light, and the bolsters sit lower and narrower than the seats further down this page. That matters in a Mk6, because a lower bolster clears the door card and the centre console cleanly in a car that was never built with a bucket seat in mind. Sparco list it as suitable for all waist sizes, which matches what we see: it is a hard seat to be the wrong shape for.

  • From £282.00 inc VAT, the cheapest way into this guide
  • All waist sizes, drivers over and under six foot
  • Tubular steel frame, 13kg
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern: Sparco subframe or Planted bracket

Sparco R333: the step-up for regular track evenings

  • From £374.56 Excl. VAT Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page

The R333 sits above the R100 in Sparco’s own range, redesigned in 2021 with deeper, sharper bolsters and a double adjustment lever with rapid tilting rather than the R100’s single lever. For most Mk6s doing daily miles the R100 is still the more practical seat, the lower bolsters are easier to live with and the slimmer frame suits a tighter cockpit. The R333 earns its place once the car is doing more than the odd track day, when the extra lateral support pays for the harder entry and exit. It uses the same 345mm x 271mm fixing as the R100, so it shares the same subframe and the same runners. Sparco list the fit as 32 to 36 inch waist and under six foot, worth knowing plainly before you order, since it is a tighter range than the R100’s.

  • From £449.47 inc VAT
  • 32 to 36 inch waist, under six foot
  • Deeper bolsters, double adjustment lever with rapid tilt
  • Takes 3 and 4 point harnesses
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern, same routes as the R100

Cobra Stuttgart Signature: the support pick

The Stuttgart Signature is Cobra’s built-to-order road and track seat, and it is the one I point Mk6 owners at once the engine has had real work done, a GTI on a stage two remap or a Golf R putting real torque through the front axle mid-corner. The headrest is built in rather than optional, and the trim is genuinely made to spec: spacer fabric, soft grain vinyl with contrast piping, leather, or leather and Dinamica, in any one or two colour combination you choose. That flexibility is the point, you are not picking from a fixed colour chart, you are speccing the seat to match an interior you have already spent money on. It bolts to the Cobra subframe directly, or the Planted bracket if you would rather keep your options open.

  • From £793.00 inc VAT, built to order in your trim
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights, 13.2kg
  • Built-in headrest, full trim and stitching options
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra subframe or Planted bracket
  • From £660.83 Excl. VAT Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page

Corbeau Sportline RRS Elite: keeps every route open

  • From £600.00 Excl. VAT Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page

The RRS Elite is the seat to pick if you have not settled on a frame yet, because it is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm and bolts straight to the Cobra subframe, the Sparco subframe, or the Planted bracket without any of them being the wrong choice. It also takes a heated option if the Mk6 is still doing daily duty through winter, worth asking about at order time since it is listed as an optional extra rather than a separate SKU. The shape is Corbeau’s usual sculpted Sportline backrest, deeper through the shoulders than the R100 without going as far as the Stuttgart’s built-to-order bolstering.

  • £720.00 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights
  • Listed 4 point compatible
  • Heated version available as an optional extra
  • Drilled for both patterns: fits the Cobra subframe, the Sparco subframe and the Planted bracket

Bride EUROSTER II Fujiwara Edition: the premium pick

Bride is a Japanese seat maker with a long history in time attack and drift builds, and the EUROSTER II Fujiwara Edition is the one to reach for once the rest of the car, drivetrain, brakes, wheels, has already had the money spent on it and you want the cabin to match. It is the only seat in this guide fitted with armrests as standard, worth noting since every other pick here is without them, and the black and white trim is a genuine change of look from the black-on-black most reclining seats ship in. The 405mm x 290mm base mount is wider than either subframe pattern on this car, so it only goes on with the Planted bracket and a matching runner.

  • £2,269.09 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights
  • Fabric trim, black and white, fitted with armrests
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 405mm x 290mm pattern: Planted bracket with a Recaro-compatible runner
  • £1,890.91 Excl. VAT Add to basket

Getting it bolted down

All three frames bolt to the Mk6’s factory seat mounting points, so there is no drilling on a standard floor. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before you drive it, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new. Between seat and frame go the sliding runners, and they follow the same pattern logic as the frames themselves. The Cobra subframe is priced and sold per seat, so a driver and passenger pair means two in the basket rather than one listing covering both.

That last runner kit is sold as Recaro-compatible, but the bolt pattern is what matters, not the badge on the seat. It is drilled to 405mm x 290mm, the same pattern the Bride uses, so it works under either seat without adaptation.

Common questions

Do I need to drill the floor of my Golf Mk6?

Not on a standard floor. All three frames bolt to the factory seat mounting points. Torque the floor bolts properly and check the seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new.

Can I put the Bride seat on the Cobra or Sparco subframe?

No. The Bride EUROSTER II uses a 405mm x 290mm base mount that does not match either subframe. The only route we sell for it on this car is the Planted bracket with a matching runner. The Corbeau Sportline RRS Elite is the exception among the seats here, drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, so it bolts to either subframe as well as the Planted bracket.

Will these seats take a 4 point harness?

Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with belt slots in the backrest. If you are planning harnesses, tell us when you order and we will make sure the whole setup works together.

Why is the Cobra subframe sold per seat rather than as a pair?

It is priced and stocked per seat position rather than as a bundled pair listing. Ordering two puts a driver and passenger pair in the basket. Check current stock before ordering, or ask us if anything on the listing is unclear.

What is the real difference between the R100 and the R333?

Both use the same 345mm x 271mm fixing and the same runners, so the choice comes down to how the car is driven. The R100 has lower, narrower bolsters that are easier to live with day to day. The R333 holds you in harder through a corner but is a tighter fit to get in and out of, and Sparco list it for under six foot drivers only. Most road-biased Mk6s are better served by the R100; the R333 earns its place once track evenings become a regular thing.

What I would actually buy

If it were my money: the R100 on the Sparco frame for a Mk6 that is still mostly a daily, because it does most of the job for the least outlay and nobody feels squeezed getting in and out of it. The RRS Elite if you have not settled on a frame yet, since it keeps every route open. The Stuttgart Signature on the Cobra subframe if the engine has had real work done and you want the trim built around exactly how you use the car. And for a Golf R that has already had the money spent on the parts nobody can see, the Bride on the Planted bracket is the one that finally makes the interior match.

Every combination above uses parts that bolt straight to the Mk6’s factory mounting points. If you are between two of these seats, or between sizes, get in touch with your height and waist measurement and we will talk it through before you spend anything.
