Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Mazda RX7 3rd Gen, including our fitting guide

The FD was not built to a compromise. Mazda’s engineers ran a weight budget through every component, and the car shows it: 1,270kg before the driver, a rotary sitting behind the front axle, and a chassis balance that the better road tyres still reward thirty years on. The factory seats were adequate for 1992, but the bolsters have usually gone in by now, and the driving position on most cars could be lower. Sitting two inches closer to the floor on a fitting frame sharpens the feel of the car noticeably.

The Planted Technology bracket is the only fitting frame we stock for the FD, and it is the right tool. It bolts to the factory floor without drilling, accepts any seat in this guide through the right runners, and brings the seating position down compared to the OEM rails. On a car where the roofline is already close, that reduction matters more than it does on most.

  • One frame route for the FD 3rd Gen: Planted Technology SB090
  • Planted bracket takes any seat in this guide paired with the right runners
  • Five picks: Corbeau PSR, Cobra Daytona, Corbeau SVR, Sparco R333, Sparco SPX
  • Tight roofline: the SVR with integrated headrest is the guide's low-roof recommendation
  • Rotary engine heat: breathable fabric trims are a practical consideration on this car

The FD RX-7. One Planted bracket route covers all five seats in this guide.

The fitting route into an FD

The FD’s floor uses a four-bolt mounting pattern that the Planted SB090 bolts straight to, no drilling and no floor modification on a standard car. The bracket is a flat base mount, not a dedicated subframe built for one seat manufacturer’s pattern, so it accepts any of the five seats in this guide as long as you pair it with the right runners. A single frame purchase covers every option here. The SB090 is listed per side: one for driver, one for passenger, the same part number for this chassis.

ANY

Planted Technology SB090

£222.60 inc VAT a side. Bolts to the FD factory floor without drilling. Takes any seat in this guide with matching runners. Add two to the order for a driver and passenger pair.

The number that decides it

Every reclining seat we sell bolts down through a base mount pattern. The Planted bracket accepts all five, but the runner kit between frame and seat needs to match the seat’s own drilling. The Corbeau PSR and SVR are drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, so either runner kit works with them. The Cobra Daytona uses 291mm only and needs the Cobra runner kit. The Sparco R333 and SPX use 345mm and take the Sparco runners. The table below shows which runner combination fits each seat.

Pick the seat firstFour of the five seats in this guide use the Sparco runner kit. Only the Cobra Daytona needs the Cobra 291mm runners. If you are not sure which seat yet, the Corbeau PSR and SVR keep both runner options open. If you need help narrowing it down before ordering, drop us an email or click to open a chat.

Corbeau PSR: the all-rounder

The PSR is where most FD conversations start at the counter. It covers 32 to 38 inch waists and all heights without needing to check a fit chart, and the bolstering gives real lateral support without the shoulder squeeze of a dedicated track seat. The backrest shape holds well on a long drive as well as a track day, which matters on a car people often keep for decades. The PSR is sold as a pair, so one order covers both driver and passenger. If you are fitting one car and have not settled on a seat, this is usually the right starting point.

  • £558.00 inc VAT for the pair
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Listed 4 point compatible
  • Drilled for 291mm and 345mm: works with either runner kit
  • Both seats in one order

Cobra Daytona: widest base in the guide

The Daytona is 580mm across the seat base, which is wider than anything else in this guide. If the PSR’s bolsters feel close for your build, this is the Cobra to look at. Cobra list the weight at 13.5kg, which is reasonable for a recliner with proper lumbar support, and the orthopaedic lumbar holds your lower back through a long session in a way lighter foam does not. The 291mm bolt pattern means it goes on the Cobra runners, not the Sparco kit, but the Planted bracket handles both, so the frame purchase stays the same whichever seat you buy. Sold as a single: add two for driver and passenger.

  • £599.00 inc VAT, single
  • 580mm base width: widest in this guide
  • 13.5kg
  • Orthopaedic lumbar support
  • 291mm bolt pattern: Planted bracket with Cobra 291mm runners

Corbeau SVR: the low-roof recommendation

The FD’s roofline is tight enough that seat height matters. The SVR runs lower in the car than Corbeau’s standard recliners because the headrest is built into the backrest rather than standing above it, and that is not a marginal difference inside the car. We point people to the SVR first on any car where headroom is raised, and on the FD it is our standard answer. This listing is the heated version: if the FD is a year-round car, the heated seat pays for itself quickly on a February morning before the rotary cabin temperature has caught up. Sold as a pair.

  • £1,248.00 inc VAT for the pair
  • Integrated headrest: sits lower in the car than standard Corbeau shapes
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Heating built into the listed product
  • Drilled for 291mm and 345mm: works with either runner kit

Sparco R333: compact, 32 to 36 inch waist, under 6 foot

The R333 is the narrowest seat in this guide, built for a specific fit range. Sparco list it for 32 to 36 inch waists and drivers under six foot. Those are the manufacturer’s stated limits, not a guideline: the R333 is a tightly dimensioned seat and drivers outside those measurements will feel it. If you are within the range, it is worth looking at: lighter than most recliners in this class, the 345mm pattern fits the Sparco runners directly, and it returns some of the FD’s weight budget back to the car. Outside the range, the PSR or the SVR fits a wider spread of drivers and is the better starting point. Sold as a single: add two for both sides.

  • £449.47 inc VAT, single
  • 32 to 36 inch waists, under 6 foot: Sparco's published limits
  • 345mm bolt pattern: Planted bracket with Sparco 345mm runners
  • Outside those sizes: the PSR or SVR is the better fit

Sparco SPX: carbon shell, no head support

The SPX is carbon fibre in a car that was engineered around weight. The shell is stiff without the added mass of foam padding the structure, and there is nothing rising above the backrest, which gives the FD as much ceiling clearance as a recliner can. The SPX has no integrated head support, so it is fine on circuit without a harness but needs a cage or roll bar with a harness pad if you are running 5 or 6 point. That is a track build decision, not something to buy speculatively on a road car. The 345mm pattern takes the same Sparco runner kit as the R333. Sold as a single: add two for both sides.

  • £2,815.79 inc VAT, single
  • Carbon fibre shell
  • No integrated head support: 5/6-point harness use needs a cage or bar with harness pad
  • 345mm bolt pattern: Planted bracket with Sparco 345mm runners

Getting it bolted down

The Planted SB090 bolts to the FD’s factory four-bolt mounting points, no drilling on a standard floor. Torque the floor bolts to spec once the seat is in and check that the seatbelt buckle clears the new seat position before you drive, because a sport seat changes where the buckle sits. Runners go between bracket and seat, and the right runner depends on the seat’s bolt pattern. Four of the five seats here use the Sparco 345mm runners. Only the Cobra Daytona needs the Cobra 291mm kit. Both the bracket and the runner kits are sold per side, so a driver and passenger fit means two of each in the basket.

This guide covers the FD: the third-generation RX-7 built from 1992 to 2002. If your car is an FC (second generation, 1985 to 1992), the SB090 bracket does not apply and we would need to check the floor pattern before recommending a frame route. The FD and FC share little beyond the rotary engine.

Common questions

Does the Planted bracket need drilling?

Not on a standard floor. The SB090 bolts to the FD's existing four-bolt seat mounting points. If the floor has been modified or repaired, check the mounting points are in factory spec before ordering. Once the seat is in, torque the floor bolts properly and confirm the seatbelt buckle clears the new seat position before driving.

Are the runners included with the Planted bracket?

No. The bracket and the runner kits are separate purchases. The bracket bolts to the floor; the runners bolt to the bracket and accept the seat. Which runner kit to order depends on your seat's bolt pattern. The table in the runners section above gives the right kit for each of the five seats in this guide.

I read on this site that recliners do not fit the RX7 cleanly. Is that still the case?

We have an older post on this site that noted recliners were a difficult fit for the FD. That post was correct at the time: most universal brackets do not clear the FD floor geometry cleanly. The Planted SB090 is made for this chassis specifically and removes that problem, which is why there are five seats in this guide. The original post is still live if you want to compare.

My FD barely has enough headroom with the standard seats. Which seat helps most?

The Corbeau SVR. Corbeau's standard recliners have a headrest that stands above the backrest; the SVR uses an integrated design that sits lower in the car. On the FD's fastback roofline, that difference is real. If headroom is the main concern, go straight to the SVR and skip the comparison step.

Would a fixed bucket seat suit my Mazda RX-7 better than a recliner?

It might, depending on how the car is used. A fixed bucket drops you lower still and gives more lateral support, but it needs a harness, not the standard seatbelt, which changes the daily use picture. We have a fitment guide for the Speedline Monaco Pro on the Mazda RX7 Mk3 if you want to look at that route. Read the Monaco Pro guide for the Mazda RX7 Mk3.

What I would actually buy

For a road car that sees occasional track days, the PSR is where I would start. Both seats in one order, no sizing guesswork. The price leaves room for the frame and runners. If headroom is the first question, go straight to the SVR: it costs more as a pair but both sides are covered and the integrated headrest earns its keep in this roofline. The R333 is the pick if you are within Sparco’s stated range (32 to 36 inch waist, under six foot) and the weight saving has a point for you. The SPX is for a track build where a cage is already part of the plan. The Daytona is the one if 580mm across the base is what you need and the orthopaedic lumbar matters on a longer run.

All five bolt to the same Planted bracket. If you are between two seats, drop us an email or click to open a chat with your height and waist and we will talk it through before you spend anything. You can also call us on 0115 647 8650.
