Top 5 reclining seat choices for your BMW Z4 E85 and E86, including our fitting guide

The Z4 E85 is the roadster and the E86 is the coupe, both from the same first-generation platform built from 2002 through 2008. The E86 M Coupe arrived in 2006 alongside the standard coupe variants, and both carry the same floor layout as the roadster. The car is compact, rear-wheel drive, and light enough to reward a proper seating position. The factory seats sit higher than the chassis deserves on a track day, and they do not hold you especially well once the speed builds.

There is one base-mount fitting frame we stock for this car: Planted Technology’s SB126, listed for the BMW Z4, M Coupe and Roadster from 2002 to 2008. Unlike some other BMWs in this guide series, the Z4 has a single-frame route. The five seats below all go onto that one bracket, each through a different runner pair matched to the seat’s base bolt pattern.

  • One fitting frame for the Z4 E85 and E86: Planted Technology SB126
  • All five seats in this guide bolt to the same Planted bracket with the right runners
  • Every seat is listed 4 point harness compatible
  • The Planted bracket bolts to the factory mounting points, no drilling on a standard floor
  • Covers the E85 Roadster and E86 Coupe including M variants

The fitting frame for a Z4 E85 and E86

The Planted Technology SB126 is the base-mount fitting bracket we stock for this car. It is listed for the BMW Z4, M Coupe and Roadster from 2002 to 2008, which covers the E85 Roadster, the E86 Coupe and both M variants. The bracket bolts to the factory seat mounting points on the driver or passenger side, and the base-mount design means it accepts reclining sport seats directly, not the FIA bucket seats a side-mount frame would take.

The bracket is listed per side, driver and passenger sold individually, so a pair means adding two to the basket. At £222.60 inc VAT each, a pair of brackets comes to £445.20 before the seats and runners go on top. The chair height drops once the bracket goes in, which is one of the reasons people fit these on a Z4 in the first place.

Per side, not per pairThe Planted bracket is listed per side on the product page. RHD driver and RHD passenger are the same part number SB126, so two of product 18117 gives you a complete driver and passenger installation. Check the seat belt buckle clearance once the seat is fitted, because the new seating position often moves the buckle.

One frame, five seat patterns

Every reclining seat we sell mounts through a base bolt pattern, and the Planted bracket on the Z4 works with three of them depending on which runner pair you order. The Corbeau SVR is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, so it can go on either runner option. The Sparco R500 and SPX both use 345mm x 271mm, and the Cobra Daytona uses 291mm x 330mm. The Recaro Sportster CS uses a wider 405mm x 290mm base, which needs the Endurance Motorsport Recaro-compatible runner kit rather than either standard sliding set. Every seat in this guide fits the Planted bracket, the runner pair is what changes.

Sparco SPX345 x 271Fits345mm Sparco runners
Corbeau SVR uses the 345mm route on this carThe SVR shell is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, so it will work with either runner set. We recommend the Sparco 345mm runners here because they are the cheaper option and the Planted bracket is happy on either pattern. If you have a specific reason to prefer the 291mm route, drop us an email or click to open a chat and we can confirm before you order.

Corbeau SVR: the low-roof pick for the Z4

The Z4 cabin is tight on headroom once the seat drops onto a fitting bracket, and the SVR is the seat that handles that best. The shell sits lower and flatter than the other recliners in this guide, which buys back the clearance the roof takes away. It is also the only seat in this guide sold as a pair from the standard listing rather than individually, which affects how you add it to the basket. The pair listing on the Z4 makes sense because most owners fit both sides at once anyway.

The SVR vinyl shell is drilled for both the 291mm Cobra pattern and the 345mm Sparco pattern, so it runs on the cheaper Sparco 345mm runners on this car without any compromise. At £1,020 a pair that works out to £510 a seat, which puts it below the R500 and well clear of the Recaro and SPX.

  • £1,020 inc VAT a pair (£510 each)
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Vinyl trim
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • Drilled for 291mm and 345mm; fits Planted bracket via Sparco 345mm runners
  • Sold as a pair from the listing

Sparco R500: the everyday all-rounder

The R500 is the seat most owners settle on when they want a proper upgrade without going as far as the Recaro. It comes in fabric or the wipe-clean Sky vinyl, and Sparco list it for 32 to 38 inch waists at all heights, which covers most people who ask. The backrest is taller and the foam denser than a budget recliner, so it holds its position better on a longer motorway run before a track day. Neither variant looks out of place in a road car the rest of the week.

It goes on the same Sparco 345mm sliding runners as the SVR above, so if you are deciding between the two, the runner choice is the same and only the seat and price change.

  • Fabric £329 inc VAT, Sky vinyl £349 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern: Sparco 345mm runners on this car

Cobra Daytona: the track-focused option

The Daytona is built to order and takes a little longer than the in-stock seats, which is worth knowing before the season starts. It is 865mm tall and 580mm wide, 13.5kg, and the Cobra shell is firmer and more upright than the Sparco options. Track drivers who find the R500 too soft in the side bolsters usually end up here. The 291mm x 330mm base pattern goes on the Cobra 291mm sliding runners, a different set from the Sparco runners the SVR and R500 use.

Cobra build the seat with a deep outer shell, so drivers on the wider end of the 32 to 38 inch waist range sometimes find it snug. If you are close to 38 inches, drop us an email or click to open a chat and we can check the current shell dimensions before you order.

  • £599 inc VAT, built to order
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • 865mm tall, 580mm wide, 13.5kg
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra 291mm runners on this car

Recaro Sportster CS: the BMW owner's natural choice

BMW owners ask for the Sportster CS more than any other reclining seat we stock, and on a Z4 it earns that reputation. Recaro list it for all waist sizes and all heights, which is not common in a seat with this much thigh and shoulder support. The leather and suede trim holds up to regular use rather than just the occasional track day, and the heated version is worth the extra if the car still comes out in autumn and winter.

The Sportster CS uses a 405mm x 290mm base mount, which is wider than the 291mm or 345mm patterns the standard Sparco and Cobra runner kits cover. On the Z4 it goes on the Endurance Motorsport Recaro-compatible runner kit instead. Those runners are cut to the 405mm bottom bolt spacing and at £95.04 per seat, so a pair adds £190.08 to the total.

  • From £1,581.30 inc VAT, heated version £1,807.50 inc VAT
  • All waist sizes, all heights
  • Leather and suede trim, heated option available
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 405mm x 290mm pattern: Endurance Recaro-compatible runners on this car

Sparco SPX: the carbon-shell option

The SPX is the most expensive seat in this guide and the lightest, at around 12kg, with a carbon-reinforced shell and a price that reflects it. Sparco list it for 32 to 38 inch waists at all heights. One thing to know before ordering: the SPX has no integrated head support. On track, a harness bar or roll cage behind the driver does that job. On the road it is not a problem, but it is a practical consideration on a car used in competition or on track days where the speeds get serious.

It runs on the same 345mm x 271mm base pattern as the R500, so the runner choice is the same Sparco 345mm sliding kit. If the Z4 is a serious track car and you want the lightest recliner option we stock for it, this is the one. Most Z4 owners end up with the R500 or Recaro instead, but the SPX is the right pick when the build goes further.

  • £2,815.79 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Carbon-reinforced shell, approximately 12kg
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • No integrated head support: needs a harness bar or cage behind the seat on track
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern: Sparco 345mm runners on this car

Getting it bolted down

The Planted bracket bolts to the factory seat mounting points in the Z4, so there is no drilling involved on a standard floor. Between the bracket and the seat go the sliding runners, and each seat in this guide uses a different runner pair matched to its bolt pattern. Torque the floor bolts properly and check the seat belt buckle clearance before driving, because the new seating position usually moves the buckle somewhere unexpected.

One thing to plan for before ordering: the Planted bracket is sold per side, so a full installation across driver and passenger means two of product 18117. The Sparco and Cobra runner kits are priced per pair, covering both sides. The Endurance Recaro runner kit is priced per seat, so a pair of Sportster CS seats needs two of those.

Cobra DaytonaCobra 291mm sliding runners, £117.60 a pair
Recaro Sportster CSEndurance Recaro-compatible runners, £95.04 per seat (£190.08 a pair)

The Planted bracket covers the E85 Roadster, the E86 Coupe and the M variants of each, all from the 2002 to 2008 production run. If your Z4 is a second-generation model, built from 2009 onward, the floor is different and this bracket does not apply. Drop us an email or click to open a chat and we can point you at the right frame for that generation.

Common questions

Do I need to drill the Z4 floor to fit the Planted bracket?

No. The Planted bracket bolts to the factory seat mounting points on both the E85 Roadster and E86 Coupe. Torque the floor bolts to the manufacturer's spec and check the seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because the new seating position often moves the buckle to an unfamiliar spot.

Does the Planted bracket cover both the E85 Roadster and the E86 Coupe, including the M variants?

Yes. Planted list their SB126 bracket for the BMW Z4, M Coupe and Roadster from 2002 to 2008. That covers the E85 in standard and M guise and the E86 in both versions. If your car is a 2009-onward second-generation Z4 on the E89 platform, that floor is different and this bracket does not apply. Get in touch and we can check what fits for that generation.

Can the Recaro Sportster CS go onto the same Planted bracket as the other seats?

Yes, but it needs a different runner set. The Sportster CS uses a 405mm x 290mm base mount, which is wider than the Sparco and Cobra 291mm or 345mm runner kits cover. On the Z4 it goes on the Endurance Motorsport Recaro-compatible runner kit (product 224836, £95.04 per seat), which is cut specifically to the 405mm bottom bolt spacing.

The Corbeau SVR is listed as a pair. Does that mean both seats come in one order?

Yes. Product 196752 is two Corbeau SVR Vinyl seats in a single listing at £1,020 inc VAT. That works out to £510 each and is how most Z4 owners order them, since both seats usually get swapped at the same time. You still need two Planted brackets and a pair of runners on top of the seat order, since those are listed separately.

Is there a guide covering bucket seats for the BMW Z4 E85 and E86 as well?

Yes. We covered the side-mount and base-mount bucket seat options for the same chassis in a separate guide. You can read it at BMW Z4 E85 and E86 Bucket Seat Guide. This page covers reclining seats only, which are the base-mount type that stays street legal and keeps the recline mechanism.

What I would actually buy

For most Z4 owners: the Corbeau SVR. The low, flat shell works with the roofline once the seat drops on the Planted bracket, it is the only one in this guide sold as a ready-made pair, and at £510 each it is the most practical option for a car that still does the roads. The R500 is the second choice if you want a single seat rather than a pair listing, or if the car is an E86 Coupe with a bit more headroom to play with.

If the car is a serious track Z4 rather than a road car with the odd track day, the Recaro Sportster CS is the one to go for. BMW owners tend to keep it for years once it is in. The Daytona sits between the two: firmer than the Sparco options, cheaper than the Recaro, and lighter. The SPX is the right answer only if the build goes further and the weight saving is genuinely part of the plan, and it needs a harness bar or cage behind it on track since there is no integrated head support.

Every combination above bolts to the Z4’s factory mounting points on the bracket Planted list for this car. If you are stuck between two of these seats, unsure which runners to order, or want to check fitment against a specific body style, call us on 0115 9893488, drop us an email or click to open a chat. We have fitted enough of these to give a straight answer rather than a guess.
