The generation that went front wheel drive
Which matters if you are shopping. The AE86 before it is rear wheel drive and takes SB021, and it is the car everybody actually means when they talk about a sporting Corolla. The AE92 is front wheel drive and is a different proposition entirely.
That said, the GT-i 16 and the supercharged GT-Z are quick, light and cheap, and there is a small following for them precisely because nobody is paying AE86 money.

This frame is made for the Toyota Corolla [AE92 Chassis] (1988-1992). Chassis code and years matter more than the badge, as floor pans change between generations, so if your car sits near a changeover year, send us the registration and we will confirm before you order.

Do I keep fore-and-aft adjustment?
Only with a sliding runner between the frame and the seat, which is a separate part on Planted frames. If more than one person drives the car, budget for the runner. Our guide to sliding runners explains the options and widths.
