The 991 in two halves
Gen 1 cars to 2015 are naturally aspirated; from 2016 the standard Carrera went turbocharged. The 991 was also the first 911 with electric power steering, which changed the feel considerably and divided opinion at the time.
That matters here more than it sounds. With less coming through the wheel, what you feel through the seat becomes proportionally more important.
