Ford Fiesta Mk3 bucket seat guide

1989 to 1997, including XR2i, RS Turbo and RS1800

The Mk3 Fiesta ran from 1989 to 1997, and it is the generation with the XR2i, the RS Turbo and the RS1800. Those are the versions people build, and the RS cars in particular are appreciating in value. A seat swap on this car is usually part of a bigger job rather than something done on its own; if a cage, harnesses and a seat are all going in together, the order matters. Frame and seat first, then set the driving position, then decide where the harness anchors go.

These cars are over thirty years old now, and the practical reality is that Mk3 Fiestas rust badly. Check the floor before ordering a sub-frame or a cage; the mounting points need to be sound before anything bolts to them.

Three brands list a Mk3-specific direct-fit sub-frame: Sparco, OMP and Corbeau. Check the generation before ordering, since the Mk4 uses a different OMP part entirely.

Mounting

The Sparco direct-fit sub-frame (14827, part 00499062) at £72.50 brings the floor up to the 345mm x 271mm base-mount pattern, taking Sparco, OMP and Corbeau seats. Sparco’s own listing notes that a Fiesta seat swap is usually part of a bigger job: get the frame and seat in first, set the driving position, then decide where the harness anchors go.

The OMP direct-fit sub-frame (15708, part HC776) at £90.85 covers both the 345mm x 271mm pattern and the larger 405mm x 290mm OMP pattern, adding Recaro compatibility. OMP’s listing is explicit: the Mk4 Fiesta takes a different part (HC793-2669), so check which generation you have before ordering.

The Corbeau direct-fit sub-frame (14599) at £245 is the Corbeau-specific option, confirmed for the Fiesta Mk3 built 1989 to 1997. Corbeau sub-frames only fit Corbeau seats; using them with another brand is not guaranteed to fit correctly.

For side mount, the Sparco FIA steel brackets (13876) carry their own FIA approval. Add the Sparco sliding runner kit (14036) for fore-aft adjustment.

Check the floor before anything elseMk3 Fiestas rust badly at over thirty years old. Check the condition of the floor mounting points before ordering a sub-frame or roll cage; the fixings need sound metal to bolt into.

Competition bucket seats

Most seats here carry FIA 8855-1999 approval. The Cobra Monaco Sport Narrow at £220 and OMP TRS-X Steel Frame at £220 are both accessible options for an RS Turbo or XR2i getting its first competition seat. The Cobra Monaco Pro at £235 is the steel-shelled dual-mount option with intrusion resistance a fibreglass shell does not offer.

The OMP Champ-R at £318 is a lighter fibreglass FIA option, side mount and HANS-compatible. The Sparco Rev QRT at £345 and Sparco Evo QRT at £475 sit at the upper end, both FIA-rated shells suited to a Fiesta built properly for regular track use.

💬
Competition seats for the Fiesta Mk3Which bucket seat for a Ford Fiesta Mk3

For a first competition seat on a track day RS Turbo or XR2i, the Cobra Monaco Sport Narrow or the OMP TRS-X Steel Frame, both at £220, are the accessible starting points. If the car sees contact, the Cobra Monaco Pro at £235 trades some weight for a steel shell. For a Fiesta built properly for circuit work, the Sparco Evo QRT at £475 gives more support through fast corners. Talk to us with the seat dimensions and confirm the sub-frame before ordering.

Reclining sport seats

Reclining sport seats are base mount on the Fiesta Mk3, fitting the Sparco, OMP or Corbeau sub-frames above. The Auto Style Type BS5 at £295 is the accessible option here. The OMP Classic 1970s Revival at £260 is a vintage-styled option worth considering on a car this old, suiting a period-correct rebuild without going as far as a full retro shell.

The Sparco R100 Martini Racing at £291.66 gives a step up in lateral support over the Auto Style option, with the Martini stripe graphics that suit an RS-badged Fiesta well.

The Auto Style Type BS5 at £295 is the straightforward road-car choice, a real step up from the factory seat. If the car is being kept period-correct, the OMP Classic 1970s Revival at £260 suits a Fiesta this old without going as far as a full retro shell. For an RS-badged car, the Sparco R100 Martini Racing at £291.66 pairs the graphics with better lateral support than the Auto Style option.

Roll cages

One cage is track-day use onlyThe rear roll cage (18724) is not homologated for motorsport use, track day use only. The other three cages here carry FIA and MSA approval.

The Safety Devices rear bolt-in cage (18724) at £415 is confirmed compatible across the Mk3, Mk4 and Mk5 Fiesta (BE13 and BE91 chassis), a genuine shared platform rather than a naming mix-up. It mounts to the floor and rear wheel arches, clears normal trim and dashboard, and is track day use only, not homologated for motorsport.

The Safety Devices Mk3 multipoint rear cage (18728) at £465 is FIA and MSA approved. The 20-point full bolt-in cage (18727) at £786 penetrates the dashboard with a dash bar and includes a lower turret brace, also FIA and MSA approved. The CDS full weld-in cage (18731) at £968 is the top of the range: cross door bars, cross diagonal backstays, roof diagonal, front triangulation, rear strut brace and a tunnel brace, suited to a Fiesta being built properly for competition.

Harnesses

Harnesses need a roll cage or harness barA 4-point, 5-point or 6-point harness with separate shoulder straps needs proper attachment points above and behind the seat. Fit a roll cage or a properly engineered harness bar before using anything above a 3-point belt.

The TRS Clubman 3-point bolt-in at £80 and 4-point clip-in at £100 both use the standard seat belt anchor points and do not need a cage. For 4-point competition use, the TRS Magnum 4-point FIA at £205 and the Takata Drift II at £229 are the step up.

For 6-point harnesses, the cage goes in first. The TRS Magnum 6-point Superlite FIA at £245, the Takata Drift III at £270, and the Schroth Profi 3×2 at £370 all suit a caged Fiesta Mk3 going to competition or serious track days.

Common questions

Yes. Mk3 Fiestas are over thirty years old now and rust badly. Check the condition of the floor mounting points before ordering a sub-frame or roll cage; the fixings need sound metal underneath them.

No. OMP’s Mk3 sub-frame is a different part number from the Mk4 frame. Check which generation you have before ordering.

No, the £415 rear bolt-in cage is track day use only and not homologated for motorsport. The other three cages in this guide carry FIA and MSA approval and are suitable for competition use.

Yes, confirmed on the manufacturer spec sheet as compatible with the Fiesta Mk3 (BE13 chassis) and Mk4/5 (BE91 chassis). This is a genuine shared platform fitment, not a naming mix-up.

Frame and seat first, then set the driving position, then decide where the harness anchors go. Doing it in a different order risks the anchor points ending up in the wrong place relative to where the driver actually sits.

No. A 6-point harness needs anchor points above and behind the seat for the shoulder straps. Fit a roll cage or a properly engineered harness bar first. A 3-point bolt-in harness uses the standard seat belt anchor points and does not need a cage.
