Ford Fiesta Mk2 bucket seat guide

1983 to 1989, including the XR2

The Mk2 Fiesta ran from 1983 to 1989. The XR2, with its 1.6 CVH engine and wider bodykit, is the version people build now. Prices have held through the classic car market and the Mk2 turns up regularly in historic and classic motorsport classes alongside the Mk1.

One practical point before ordering: the Corbeau direct-fit subframe made for this chassis is no longer listed. Side mount via the Sparco FIA steel brackets works for all competition bucket seats, and that is what this guide is built around. For reclining sport seats, which are base-mount, you would need a floor plate fabricated or a period subframe sourced separately.

Check the floor before ordering anything structural. Mk2 Fiestas are over forty years old now, and rust at the sill and floor mounting points is common. Seat mounts, cage feet and harness anchor points all need sound metal underneath.

Mounting

The Sparco FIA steel side-mount brackets (13876, £90.00) are the main fitting route for this car. They weld or bolt to the chassis at the factory seat runner positions, then accept any FIA-approved side-mount seat, including all the competition bucket seats in this guide. Add the Sparco sliding runner kit (14036, £41.94) for fore-aft adjustment, or the Corbeau sliding runners (15739, £58.80) as an alternative.

The Corbeau direct-fit subframe made specifically for the Mk2 (14601) is no longer listed. For reclining sport seats, which are base-mount, you will need either a floor plate fabricated to the standard 345mm x 271mm base-mount pattern or a period subframe sourced through the classic car trade.

Check the floor firstMk2 Fiestas are over forty years old now. Check the condition of the floor and sill mounting points before ordering a sub-frame, cage or harness anchor. The fixings need sound metal to attach to.

Competition bucket seats

All these seats fit via the Sparco FIA side-mount brackets (13876) above. The Cobra Monaco Sport Narrow at £220 and OMP TRS-X Steel Frame at £220 are the starting point for a first competition build. Both are road and track rated, not FIA, which covers trackdays and most club events.

The Cobra Monaco Pro FIA at £235 is the steel-shelled option, dual mount, with intrusion resistance the fibreglass seats do not offer. The OMP Champ-R at £381.60 is an FIA fibreglass seat with HANS compatibility. The OMP ARS-R at £513.60 gives more shoulder support in the same FIA range. At the top, the Sparco Rev QRT at £414.00 and Sparco Evo QRT at £570.00 are both FIA-rated dual-mount shells for a Mk2 built seriously for club competition.

For a first competition seat on a trackday XR2, the Cobra Monaco Sport Narrow or OMP TRS-X Steel Frame at £220 are the logical starting point. If the car sees contact or the class requires FIA approval, the Cobra Monaco Pro at £235 gives a steel shell and dual mount. For an XR2 built for historic club racing, the Sparco Evo QRT at £570.00 provides the lateral support that a light classic needs through fast corners.

Reclining sport seats

Base mount on this carReclining sport seats use the base-mount pattern. The Corbeau direct-fit Mk2 subframe is no longer listed, so fitting a recliner means fabricating a floor plate or sourcing a period subframe.

The Corbeau Sportsman at £468.00 is the standout option for a car this age. It is a narrow seat at 415mm, with lower side bolsters for easy access, and it suits a period-correct XR2 well. This is one of the few guides in this series where the Sportsman is the right recommendation rather than the exception: a car over forty years old qualifies.

The Auto Style Type Classic II at £229 is the straightforward budget recliner for a road-going Mk2. The Auto Style Type BS5 at £354.00 adds more lateral support. The Sparco R100 Vinyl at £235 and Sparco R100 Martini Racing at £349.99 are better again for support, and the Martini stripe on the R100 suits an XR2 well visually.

The Corbeau Sportsman at £468.00 is the right seat for a period-correct classic build, or a road-going XR2 that needs to stay sympathetic to the car's age. For a budget road car, the Auto Style Type Classic II at £229 covers the basics. If the car gets occasional trackdays on a road seat, the Sparco R100 Vinyl at £235 gives better lateral support than either Auto Style option.

Roll cages

All six cages here are confirmed by the manufacturer for the Fiesta Mk1, Mk2 or 2nd Series. The Safety Devices rear bolt-in cage (18721, £498.00) is the starting point: mounts to floor and rear arches, clears standard trim. The Safety Devices full bolt-in cage (18720, £855.60) adds more mounting points and more triangulation across the Mk1 and Mk2.

The OMP 2nd Series cage (18867, £699.42) is FE45 steel with door bars included, but those bars need cutting and welding on fitment, and the feet brackets weld to the chassis floor. If you want a cleaner bolt-in, the Safety Devices options are the practical choice. The Custom Cages CDS roll cage (16688, £1,311.00) and T45 multipoint cage (16689, £1,818.30) are both Mk2-specific and suit the car built for club motorsport. At the top, the Custom Cages International T45 (236032, £1395) is the full competition option for higher motorsport classes.

Harnesses

Shoulder harnesses need anchor pointsA 4-point or higher harness with separate shoulder straps needs proper anchor points above and behind the seat. Fit a roll cage or a properly engineered harness bar before using anything beyond a standard 3-point belt.

The TRS Clubman 3-point bolt-in (14211, £96.00) and 4-point clip-in (14212, £120.00) both use the standard seat belt anchor points and need no cage. For 4-point competition use, the TRS Magnum 4-point FIA (14217, £246.00) and Takata Drift II (17344, £229) are the step up.

For 6-point harnesses, the cage goes in first. The TRS Magnum 6-point Superlite FIA (17148, £294.00), Takata Drift III (17348, £324.00) and Schroth Profi 3×2 FIA (19736, £370) all suit a caged Mk2 going to club competition or regular trackdays.

Common questions

Yes. The Mk2 ran from 1983 to 1989, making it over forty years old now. The Corbeau Sportsman is reserved for genuine classic and vintage cars, and a car this age qualifies.

The Corbeau direct-fit subframe made for the Mk2 (14601) is no longer listed. For base-mount seats, you would need a floor plate fabricated to the 345mm x 271mm base-mount pattern, or a period subframe sourced through the classic car trade. For competition bucket seats, the side-mount route via Sparco FIA brackets (13876) avoids this entirely.

Yes. Safety Devices confirm both the rear bolt-in (18721) and the full bolt-in cage (18720) across the Mk1 and Mk2. The Custom Cages options are listed specifically for the Mk2. Check the product page before ordering.

Yes. The OMP 2nd Series cage (18867) includes door bars that need cutting and fitting on installation, and the feet brackets weld to the chassis floor. If you want a bolt-in without welding, the Safety Devices options are the simpler choice.

No. A 6-point harness needs anchor points above and behind the seat for the shoulder straps. Fit a roll cage or a properly engineered harness bar first. The TRS Clubman 3-point and 4-point clip-in use the standard seat belt anchor points and need no cage.

Yes. Mk2 Fiestas are over forty years old and rust badly at the sill and floor mounting points. Any structural item, whether a seat frame, roll cage or harness anchor, needs sound metal to bolt or weld to. Check before ordering.
