BMW 3 Series E30 bucket seat guide
1982 to 1994
Start with the thing that catches people out on this car, because it is the one mistake that costs real money. The E30 M3 does not take the same subframe as the rest of the range. Cobra and OMP both catalogue a separate M3 part alongside their standard E30 one, and they are not interchangeable.
If you have an M3, order the M3 part. If you have a 318is or a 325i, order the standard one. It sounds obvious written down, and it still goes wrong regularly because the cars look so similar from the outside.
Past that, the E30 is a well served car. There are three frames for the standard shell, a good spread of period styled seats that suit an interior of this age, and Safety Devices make two cages for the two door.
- The E30 M3 takes its own subframe: Cobra and OMP both list a separate M3 part
- For the standard E30 there are three frames, from Planted, Sparco and OMP
- All of them are base mount, and no sliding sub frame is catalogued for the E30
- A fixed back shell fits on side mount brackets that pick up on the frame
- The Auto Style Classic, OMP Classic 1970s Revival and Recaro Classic LS are listed for all waists and all heights
- Safety Devices make two E30 two door cages, one for cars with a sunroof and one without
What is on this page
The M3 is a different part
Two makers split their E30 range in two. Cobra list a direct fit subframe specifically for the M3, and OMP list both an E30 part and an M3 E30 part. Planted and Sparco list one part each for the standard car.
So the first question on any E30 seat job is which car it is. Getting that wrong means a frame that does not line up with the floor, and on a car this valuable that is not a mistake worth making to save a phone call.
Everything here is base mount. The seat bolts down through its own floor pan onto the frame, and a fixed back competition shell hangs on a pair of side mount brackets instead. There is no sliding sub frame for the E30, so the fore and aft position is set at fitting.

Say which E30 you have when you orderM3 or standard, and the year. If there is any doubt at all, send us the registration and we will check it before anything is picked. The two frames look similar in a photograph and do not fit the same car.
Period styled and reclining seats
Most E30s are cared for now rather than used up, and the seat wants to look like it belongs. These are the options that do that while holding you far better than a tired original.
Three of them fit almost anybody, being listed for all waists and all driver heights: the Auto Style Classic Fabric, the OMP Classic 1970s Revival and the Recaro Classic LS. The Cobra Classic 40th Edition is the one to check yourself against, as it is drawn for drivers under six foot.

Our picksConfirm the car, then pick on looks and fit
Once the M3 question is settled the rest is straightforward. The Auto Style Classic Fabric is the value option that suits the interior, and the Cobra Le Mans is the one for a car doing longer journeys. Cameron works out the fit and the combination for a given car, so send your height, your waist and whether it is an M3.
Competition shells
For an E30 built as a race or hillclimb car, these are the fixed back options, both needing side mount brackets to pick up on the frame.
The Recaro Classic Pole Position ABE is the one that suits the car visually, being the period styled version of that shell. The Sparco QRT Performance is the modern alternative if the look matters less.

Harnesses
On the road the standard belt is right and works with everything here. A harness is a track item and it needs somewhere solid to anchor the shoulder straps, behind you and at or above shoulder height.
On an E30 that realistically means one of the cages below. Nothing in the standard structure of a car this age is designed to take that load. Plan the two together rather than buying belts and working it out afterwards.

Our recommendationsBelts and cage are one conversation on an E30
Because the shoulder anchor has to come from the cage on most of these cars, price them together. The TRS Clubman belts cover road and trackday use, and the dated FIA belts are for cars entering something that asks for them. Send us the plan and we will quote it as one job.
Roll cages
Safety Devices make two cages for the E30 two door, and the difference between them is the roof. One is drawn for a car with a sunroof and one for a car without, because a full cage runs members through the space a sunroof aperture occupies.
Check which yours is before ordering. It takes a moment and it is not something that can be worked around afterwards.

What fits what
Waist, height and approval are from each product listing. Where a listing does not state a figure the table says so.

Questions about fitting seats in a BMW E30
Does the E30 M3 take the same subframe as a normal E30?
No. Cobra and OMP both catalogue a separate M3 part alongside their standard E30 one. Order to the car you actually have, and if there is any doubt send us the registration first.
Which frames fit a standard E30?
Planted list a bracket for the 1982 to 1991 chassis, and Sparco and OMP both list a direct fit subframe. All three are base mount.
Can I keep the seat adjustment?
Not from the frame, because no sliding sub frame is catalogued for the E30. A runner under a base mounted seat gives some of it back, at the cost of sitting slightly higher.
Which cage do I need?
That depends on the roof. Safety Devices make one E30 two door cage for a car with a sunroof and one for a car without, because a full cage uses the space the sunroof aperture occupies. Check yours before ordering.
Which seats suit an original interior?
The Auto Style Classic Fabric, the OMP Classic 1970s Revival and the Recaro Classic LS all suit a car of this age and are listed for all waists and all heights. The Recaro Classic Pole Position ABE is the period looking option if you want a fixed back shell.
