BMW 5 Series E34 bucket seat guide
1987 to 1996
The E34 is a big car with a wide cabin, and that changes the conversation. On most of the cars we write these guides for the limiting factor is space, and the answer is a narrower shell. Here it is not. There is room either side of you, which means the seat can be chosen around the driver instead of around the door card.
The mounting side is simpler than the E36 too, because there is only one answer. Two frames are catalogued for the E34 and both are base mount. No sliding sub frame is made for it, so the runner route that suits an E36 does not exist here.
That is not a limitation worth worrying about on a car like this. A base mounted seat on a direct fit frame sits low and solid, and on a saloon that weighs what this one weighs, feeling connected to the floor is most of the point.

What is on this page
One route, and what it means
Two frames are made for this car. Planted list a bracket for the E34 chassis covering 1987 to 1996, and Corbeau list a direct fit sub-frame. Both are base mount, which is to say the seat bolts down through its own floor pan onto the frame.
What is not made for the E34 is a sliding sub frame. On the E36 you can put the seat on a runner and keep the fore and aft travel. Here you set the position when it goes in. Worth knowing before you order if the car gets shared.
If the seat you want is a fixed back shell that only side mounts, that is still possible. The shell hangs on a pair of side mount brackets which pick up on the frame. It is an extra part rather than a different route, and it is how most competition shells end up in this car.

Fixed back competition seats
All five below are FIA 8855-1999 shells and all five need side mount brackets to pick up on the frame.
Size is where they separate. The Sabelt Titan X-Large is drawn for a 36in to 40in waist and drivers over six foot. The OMP First R covers up to 38in. The Cobra Suzuka T GT and the Sparco QRT-R are both listed for all driver heights. The Corbeau Pro Series X System 3 is the tightest of them, at 32in to 36in and under six foot.

Base mounted and reclining seats
This is the natural half of the page for an E34, because it is the route the car is set up for and most of these cars are still doing road miles.
The two dual fitment seats are the useful ones to know about. The Cobra Monaco Pro and the OMP TRS-X are both listed for base or side mounting, so either will bolt straight to the frame without side mount brackets, and either can be moved onto a side mount setup later. The TRS-X is also the most accommodating seat on this page, listed from a 28in waist and for drivers both under and over six foot.

A harness is what makes a bucket seat work properly on circuit. On the road the standard belt is fine and stays fine with any seat on this page.

Questions about fitting seats in a BMW E34
Can I keep the fore and aft adjustment?
Not on a direct fit frame, because no sliding sub frame is catalogued for the E34. The seat position is set when it goes in. If the car is shared and adjustment matters more than outright height, tell us and we will talk through what the runner options would mean.
Will a fixed back competition seat fit an E34?
Yes. The frames are base mount, so a side mounted shell needs a pair of side mount brackets to pick up on the frame. That is an additional part rather than a different frame, and it is the normal way a competition shell goes into this car.
Is the E34 cabin tight for a wider driver?
No, and it is one of the roomier cars we write these guides for. Width is rarely the limiting factor here. If you are outside the usual 32in to 36in listing, look at the OMP TRS-X from 28in, the OMP First R and the Cobra Daytona to 38in, or the Sabelt Titan X-Large to 40in.
Can I put a Corbeau seat on the Planted frame?
On the base mount route, yes. Base mount Sparco, OMP and Corbeau seats share one bolt pattern, so those three cross over onto the same frames. Recaro is the exception, because Recaro sub-frames are drawn for Recaro seats only.
Do I need a harness bar before I order belts?
You need something solid behind the seat at or above shoulder height for the shoulder straps to anchor to. On an E34 that is a harness bar or a cage. Send us a photograph of what is behind the front seats and we will confirm whether it will carry belts.
