Audi TT Mk3 bucket seat guide

8S chassis, 2014 to 2023, Coupe and Roadster

The earlier TT guides on this site spend a lot of time on the bracket question. The Mk1 gives you four frames and three bolt patterns to work out before you buy a seat. The Mk2 has a Cobra subframe that locks you into Cobra seats if you pick it without thinking. The Mk3 is different. One company makes a bracket for the 8S chassis. It is Planted, it is £185.50 a seat, and it supports both base mount and side mount routes through the same part. The seat choice leads here, not the frame choice.

There are still decisions to make. If you are running a competition shell you need a set of side mounts on top of the Planted bracket, and a runner if you want the fore-aft adjustment back. The reclining seats all use a bolt pattern and the Planted bracket does not publish one, which means those pairings need checking before you order either part. And if a harness is on the plan, the cage is a weld-in, which is a bigger commitment than the bolt-in options that existed for the Mk1. But the entry point is simpler than it was for either previous generation, and that is worth knowing before you start.

The bracket for an 8S

Planted Technology make a single bracket for this car, part SB337 at £185.50. It replaces the standard seat runners and bolts to the 8S floor mounting points. The seat then goes either directly onto the bracket for a base mount build, or onto a pair of side mounts that attach to the bracket for a competition shell. No other direct-fit bracket is listed specifically for the Mk3. The Sparco and Recaro subframes that existed for the Mk1 are for earlier platforms, and no equivalent was released for the 8S.

Both seats front means ordering two brackets. The SB337 is available as RHD driver side or RHD passenger side and the two are separate parts, so if you are changing both seats order each version once rather than ordering the same one twice.

One thing to be aware of before you add the bracket to the basket: if a reclining seat is going on, the bracket publishes no bolt pattern. Several of the reclining seats further down this page publish one, and the usual way to confirm a pairing is to match the two figures. Here you cannot, so send us the frame part number and the seat part number together and we will confirm the combination before anything ships.

◫

Bracket and a base mount seat

The simplest build and the one that keeps the stack height lowest. A reclining seat or a base-mountable bucket bolts straight to the bracket through its own base holes. No side mounts involved, so the total height added is just the bracket. On a car with a low coupe roof that is the route to give yourself room, particularly if you are running a helmet on track. Five of the bucket seats on this page and all six of the reclining seats are base mount compatible.

☰

Bracket and side mounts

The competition route, and the one that opens up the full range of FIA side mount shells. A pair of side mounts goes between the bracket and the seat. The Sparco FIA steel brackets are £75 per set, listed for Sparco, OMP, Cobra and Sabelt side mount seats as well as their own. The Cobra steel mounts are £62 per set. Side mounts add roughly 30 to 40mm to the total stack height, so in a coupe that is worth thinking through before you commit.

The bracket is the only vehicle-specific part in the kit. Everything after that is a choice based on how the seat mounts and whether you want the fore-aft adjustment.

Confirm the reclining seat pairing before you orderThe Planted bracket publishes no bolt pattern. Reclining seats publish a pattern, and the usual check is matching the two figures. On this car that check is not possible from the listing alone, so send us the seat part number and the bracket part number together first. A few minutes now saves a return later. Also worth doing at the same time: check where the seat belt buckle stalk ends up after the standard seat runners come out, because a bucket seat often moves it somewhere unexpected.

Bucket seats that fit

Five of these take base mount as well as side mount: the Sparco Sprint at £210, the OMP TRS-X at £220, the Cobra Monaco Pro at £235, the Cobra Monaco 40th Edition at £395 and the Sparco Pro 2000 QRT at £499.50. Those five bolt straight to the Planted bracket with no mounts underneath, which is the lowest and simplest build. Every other bucket here is side mount only and wants the Sparco FIA brackets or the Cobra mounts on top of the bracket first.

Height is worth reading carefully on this car. The coupe roofline is low and four of these are listed for under 6ft only: the Cobra Monaco Pro, the Mirco GT 3D, the Cobra Monaco 40th Edition and the Recaro Pole Position. The Sparco Sprint, OMP TRS-X, Sabelt GT3, OMP ARS-R, Sabelt Titan X-Large, Sparco Pro 2000 QRT and Sparco QRT Performance are all listed for all heights. If you are over six foot and running a helmet, the total stack is the variable to keep an eye on, and a base mount build without a runner is the way to take height back.

On waist size the Sabelt Titan X-Large at £511 covers 36in to 40in, the widest figure on this page. The OMP ARS-R at £428 covers 36in to 38in. The OMP TRS-X covers 28in to 36in, a broader range than most of the others. Everything else here is 32in to 36in.

The Recaro Pole Position at £866.25 is not FIA homologated. It is a road and track seat. Every other bucket here carries FIA 8855-1999 approval. If the car gets scrutineered, the Recaro does not pass on approval alone, and that is worth knowing before spending that much on it.

💬
Our picks, not the whole listSeat first, then the bracket

On a Mk3 the frame question does not change anything: there is one bracket and it handles both mounting styles. So the three things that narrow this list down are whether the car gets scrutineered and needs an FIA 8855-1999 shell, your height (the roof is low and four of these are under 6ft only), and whether base or side mount suits the build. Send those three to Cameron and he will work out the fit, the right mounting setup for your specific build and the best combination for the car.

Reclining seats

These bolt directly to the Planted bracket, no side mounts involved, and the backrest still adjusts. All six are road and track rated. None are FIA homologated, so if the car gets scrutineered a fixed back bucket is the route, not a recliner.

The bolt pattern is the thing to sort before you order any of these. The Planted bracket publishes no figure, and none of the six seats below publish a matching pattern that can be confirmed without us checking the pairing. The Corbeau Sportline RRS seats, at £930 and £1070, are the most permissive on paper: both list 291mm x 330mm as well as 345mm x 271mm, which covers the widest range of frames. The Sparco R333, SPR and SPX are 345mm x 271mm. The Cobra Misano Anniversary is 291mm x 330mm. Ask us first and we will confirm the pairing before either part ships.

On price this range runs from £374.56 for the Sparco R333 to £2346.49 for the Sparco SPX. The R333 is the entry point, the SPR and SPX are the top end, and the Cobra Misano Anniversary at £1374.17 is made to order with 4 to 6 weeks to allow. The two Corbeau Sportline RRS seats at £930 and £1070 are the leather options and the only ones here covering 36in to 38in waist as well as 32in to 36in.

Harnesses

No car-specific Schroth belt exists for the Mk3. The Schroth QuickFit ASM listed for the TT is the 8N belt, built for the Mk1, and it does not transfer to this car. On the 8S you are fitting a universal harness to a mounting point you have to create, and the mounting point is the question to sort before you buy a belt.

Shoulder straps want fixing behind the seat at roughly shoulder height. On an 8S there is nothing factory at that height to use. The Custom Cages weld-in multipoint below includes a harness bar in the build, which solves the mounting point and the cage together. If a full cage is not on the plan, ask us what bolt-in harness bar options exist for this car before you commit to a belt.

Of the universal belts, the TRS Magnum 6 Point Superlite at £245 is the cheapest FIA 8853-2016 option here. The Schroth Profi 3×2 at £370.01 is on the same standard and HANS friendly. The TRS Magnum 4 Point at £205 is FIA 8854-1998, an older standard some series no longer accept, so read your regulations before buying it for competition use. The Takata Drift belts and the TRS Clubman belts are road and trackday rated without FIA homologation, and all four are listed as not HANS compatible. Every FIA belt carries a manufacture date expiry that ends its competition life whether it has been worn or not.

💬
Our recommendationsSort the mounting point before you buy the belt

The belt is the easy half of this. What decides what you buy is what the shoulder straps bolt to, and on an 8S there is nothing factory at the right height. If a cage is on the plan, the Custom Cages kit below includes a harness bar as part of the build. If it is not, ask us about bolt-in harness bar options before you spend anything on a belt. Tell us whether a HANS is going on, what the car does at weekends and whether the cage is coming later or not coming at all, and we will say which combination makes sense for where the car is going.

Roll cage

One cage is listed for the Mk3: the Custom Cages T45 multipoint kit, part TTM3/16, at £1495. It is weld-in, FIA approved and MSUK compliant. There is no bolt-in option for this car, which makes this a bigger commitment than the equivalent Safety Devices bolt-in rear bars that were available for the Mk1.

The listing names the Audi TT Mk3 without specifying Coupe or Roadster. If yours is the convertible, ask before you plan around this. T45 tube and FIA approval are earned by the cage design and its certification, not the material on its own, so if you are building to a class let us know what the cage has to satisfy before you order.

What fits what

The mounting column covers the seat type. All seats go onto the Planted bracket. For a base mount seat, the seat bolts directly to the bracket. For a side mount seat, add the Sparco FIA brackets or the Cobra steel mounts first. The Planted bracket publishes no bolt pattern, so for any reclining seat in the base mount column confirm the pairing with us before ordering either part.

Common questions

One bracket: Planted Technology SB337 at £185.50 per seat, steel, available as RHD driver side or passenger side. It replaces the standard seat runners and supports both base mount and side mount. If you are running a side mount competition shell, add Sparco FIA brackets at £75 per set or Cobra steel mounts at £62 per set on top of the Planted bracket. If you want to keep the fore-aft adjustment, add a runner. There is no other direct-fit subframe listed specifically for the 8S chassis.

Yes, but confirm the pairing first. The Planted bracket does not publish a bolt pattern. The reclining seats on this page all do, and on most cars you can check the two figures yourself. On the Mk3 you need us to confirm it on your behalf. Send us the bracket part number (SB337) and the seat part number together and we will say whether they pair before either part ships.

No. Neither Cobra, OMP nor Sparco list a vehicle-specific subframe for the 8S. The only direct-fit bracket available for this chassis is the Planted SB337. If you want to run a Cobra, OMP or Sparco seat, the Planted bracket plus a set of side mounts is the route for a side mount shell, or the Planted bracket and a base mount build if the seat supports it.

The Custom Cages listing says Audi TT Mk3, without specifying the body style. We have flagged this to Garreth to confirm. If yours is the Roadster convertible, ask us before you plan around the cage, because the Mk1 guide had the same situation and every cage listed there named the Coupe only.

Not one we currently list. The only cage option for this car is the Custom Cages T45 weld-in at £1495, which includes a harness bar in the build. Unlike the Mk1, where Safety Devices made bolt-in rear cages with harness bars that could come back out again, no equivalent bolt-in option is listed for the 8S. Ask us what is available and we will check before you commit to a weld-in cage.

Yes. The Planted bracket bolts to the floor and a pair of side mounts goes between the bracket and the seat. The Sparco FIA steel brackets are £75 per set, listed to fit Sparco, OMP, Cobra and Sabelt side mount seats. The Cobra steel mounts are £62 per set. Seven of the bucket seats on this page are side mount only, and all of them go in this way.

No. Schroth list a QuickFit ASM harness for the TT 8N, which is the Mk1 from 1998 to 2006. That belt does not transfer to the 8S. On the Mk3 you are fitting a universal harness to a mounting point that does not exist from the factory. The harness section of this guide covers what that means.

It does, but the coupe roofline is low. What matters is the total stack: the bracket, the side mounts if you are using them, and a runner if you want the adjustment. A base mount seat straight onto the bracket with no runner is the lowest possible build. Four of the buckets here are listed for under 6ft, so read that figure rather than assuming. If you are over six foot and planning to run a helmet, tell us your height when you enquire and we will say which seats and which stack leave you room.

The same one: Planted SB337 at £185.50 per seat. The floor mounting points are the same across the Coupe and Roadster. Where the body style matters is the cage: the one listed for this car names the Mk3 without specifying, so ask us before ordering if a cage or harness bar is part of the plan.

The Mk3 is the 8S, built from 2014 onwards. The fastest check is the interior: the 8S replaced most of the physical controls with a virtual cockpit and a single MMI dial, so if the dashboard is dominated by screens and very few physical buttons you have the Mk3. From the outside the 8S is slightly wider and lower than the 8J, with sharper creases on the bonnet and a wider single-frame grille. If there is any doubt, send us the registration and we will confirm the chassis before you spend anything on parts.

No. The 8S shares the MQB platform with the Golf Mk7 in a general sense but the floor geometry is different, so a Golf Mk7 bracket does not transfer to the TT Mk3 and vice versa. Use the part listed for the TT Mk3 specifically, which is the Planted SB337.

More help

If you have an earlier TT, the Mk1 guide covers the 8N from 1998 to 2006 and has four frames to choose from. The Mk2 guide covers the 8J from 2006 to 2014 with three subframe options and a brand restriction on the Cobra one. Both are worth reading before you come to a Mk3, because the bracket question changed at each generation.

To get a seat or a frame pairing confirmed before you spend anything, the contact link is the fastest way. Tell us the chassis, your height and the seat you are looking at, and we will say which mounting setup works for your specific car.
