BMW 3 Series E46 bucket seat guide
1998 to 2006
More E46s get built than almost anything else we sell seats for, and the catalogue shows it. This is the only car in the range where the roll cage section is longer than the seat section, and where you genuinely have to think about which cage rather than whether one exists.
Those cages split three ways. By body, because the compact, the coupe and the saloon each get their own. By construction, because there is a full weld-in as well as the bolt-ins. And then by door bar, where the coupe and saloon are each offered with a single bar or a cross.
The seats are the easy half. Both mounting routes exist, so you can have a shell on a runner or bolted low, and the choice is about how the car is used.
- Both routes exist: a PCI sliding sub frame that keeps the seat moving, or a direct fit base mount frame
- Base mount frames come from Cobra, Sparco and Planted, and the Planted part is the saloon
- Cages split by body first: the compact, the coupe and the saloon all take different kits
- Coupe and saloon cages are then offered with either a single door bar or a cross door bar
- There is a full weld-in cage as well, for a car built for competition rather than trackdays
- Base mount Sparco, OMP and Corbeau seats share one bolt pattern, so those frames cross over
What is on this page
The two routes
The PCI sliding sub frame is the route for an E46 that still gets driven on the road. It puts the seat on a runner so it moves fore and aft after fitting, and it takes side mounted shells.
The direct fit frames from Cobra, Sparco and Planted are the base mount route. Lower, more solid, position set once. Worth noting that Planted catalogue their E46 part as the sedan, so check the body against the listing before ordering.
One useful thing about the base mount route here. Base mount Sparco, OMP and Corbeau seats share a single bolt pattern, so a Sparco frame will happily take an OMP or Corbeau seat. That opens up more of the seat list than any one frame listing suggests.

Fixed back competition seats
All seven are FIA 8855-1999 shells and all need side mount brackets to join them to the frame.
On fit, the Cobra Suzuka T GT and the Sparco QRT-R are both listed for all driver heights. The others are drawn for drivers under six foot, which is the usual pattern and worth checking rather than assuming.

Reclining and base mounted seats
Plenty of E46s are still road cars doing a few trackdays a year, and a reclining shell is the right answer for one of those.
The Cobra Monaco Pro is the seat that sits across both halves of this page, listed for base or side mounting. The Auto Style BS5 and Type RK are both listed for all waists, and the Cobra Daytona, Corbeau Sportline RRS Elite and Sparco R100 Vinyl all go to a 38in waist.

On most cars the seat comes first. On an E46 the cage is the bigger decision, because it decides the harness anchor and it depends on a body and door bar choice you cannot change later. Cameron works out the fit and the combination for a given car, so tell him the body style, whether a cage is coming, and your height and waist.
Harnesses
The standard belt works with any seat here on the road. On circuit the harness is what keeps you still, and the shoulder straps need a solid anchor behind you at or above shoulder height.
On an E46 that anchor almost always comes from the cage, which is another reason to settle the cage first. Tell us what is going in and we will match the belts to it.

The TRS Clubman belts cover fast road and trackday use with nothing to renew. The Magnum 6 point Superlite and the Schroth Profi carry FIA dates and are worth it inside a series that asks for them. Send us the championship and we will confirm which.
Roll cages, and how to choose one
Start with the body. The compact has its own pair from Custom Cages, in CDS and in T45 steel. The two door and four door each have their own Custom Cages kit. Safety Devices then cover the coupe and the saloon with bolt-in cages, and there is a full weld-in for a dedicated build.
Then choose the door bar. Safety Devices offer the coupe and the saloon with either a single door bar or a cross. A cross gives more side protection and makes getting in and out harder, which is the trade. On a car that is still road driven most people take the single bar.
Bolt-in against weld-in is the last question. Bolt-in can come out again and suits a car that is still registered for the road. Weld-in is stiffer and is what competition regulations usually name. Check what your championship asks for before ordering, because the rules name the type.

Questions about fitting seats in a BMW E46
Which cage do I need for my E46?
Three questions decide it. Which body, because the compact, coupe and saloon all take different kits. Bolt-in or weld-in, where bolt-in suits a road registered car and weld-in a competition build. And single or cross door bars on the coupe and saloon, where a cross gives more side protection and makes access harder.
Can I keep the seat adjustment?
Yes, with the PCI sliding sub frame, which keeps the fore and aft travel after fitting. The direct fit frames from Cobra, Sparco and Planted are the base mount route and set the position once, sitting the seat lower.
Does the Planted frame fit the coupe?
Planted catalogue their E46 bracket as the sedan. Check the listing against your body style before ordering, and if you are unsure send us the registration and we will confirm which frame suits your car.
Will a Corbeau seat fit a Sparco frame?
On the base mount route, yes. Base mount Sparco, OMP and Corbeau seats share one bolt pattern, so those three cross over onto the same frames. Recaro is the exception, as their sub-frames take Recaro seats only.
Do I need the cage before I can run a harness?
You need a solid anchor behind the seat at or above shoulder height for the shoulder straps, and on an E46 that normally comes from the cage. A harness bar does the same job. Tell us what is going in the car and we will make sure the belts suit it.
