Customer Question: Which Reclining Sport Seats Fit My Lotus Esprit?
Customer question, Lotus Esprit
The Lotus Esprit has one of the most distinctive cabins of any classic performance car: a very low roof, a narrow floorpan, a deep centre tunnel and a cockpit that tapers as it goes. It is also one of the hardest cars we are asked about when it comes to aftermarket seats.
We are asked regularly which reclining sport seats fit an Esprit, and the honest answer is none. This guide explains why, why most compact bucket seats will not work either, and the narrow Tillett shells that give an Esprit owner a realistic chance, with some preparation.
- We do not recommend any reclining sport seat for the Lotus Esprit
- Popular compact buckets are too wide at the shoulders and base as well
- Narrow Tillett shells are the realistic option, in their standard width, never XL
- The Tillett B6 is offered at 40cm wide with the rolled edges cut off
- Expect some interior work and a custom low mounting
- Use a specialist experienced with classic Lotus for the installation

Why the Esprit is so difficult
The Esprit was never designed with aftermarket seats in mind. The roofline is very low, the centre tunnel is tall, and the cabin is narrow at the B pillars, so there is almost no spare room around the seat. The factory seats sit very low and follow the shape of the cockpit closely, and any replacement has to live within the same footprint.
In practice that means an owner should expect interior work whatever seat they choose: clearance around the tunnel, carpet trimming, and very often a bespoke mounting to get the seat low enough for the roof. Those problems apply to reclining seats and bucket seats alike, and they are far worse than in most classic sports cars.
Why no reclining seat fits
A reclining seat carries its mechanism on the sides of the frame, outside the seat base itself, and that makes it wider low down, exactly where the Esprit has least room. Even the Corbeau SVR, one of the most compact recliners we sell, was tried in an Esprit by two specialist companies that modify these cars, and in both cases the mechanism met the tunnel or the door trim.
If a seat that size will not go in, no other recliner will. A seat that cannot sit square will not bolt down securely or give a proper driving position, so we do not recommend a recliner for this car at all.
Why most bucket seats do not fit either
You might expect a fixed back bucket to be easier. It is not, in most cases. Popular compact buckets such as the Sparco Rev, OMP Champ R, Sparco Sprint and Cobra Monaco Pro are all too wide at the shoulders and the lower bolsters for the Esprit, and their bases are too square for the narrow floorpan. The shoulder wings flare out too far to sit between the B pillar and the tunnel.
Forcing a seat like that in means cutting things that should not be cut, and a seat that does not sit properly does not protect you properly. We would not suggest it.
The narrow Tillett shells
The realistic options come from Tillett, who make some of the narrowest bare shell fibreglass and carbon seats available, with shells that taper at the base and the shoulders.
The one we list is the B6. It is 42.5cm across the outside of the shoulders and 35cm across the base, and you can order it at 40cm wide with the rolled edges cut off, the choice for a tight tunnel or narrow sill, or 44cm with them left on. It is 81cm tall. The standard B6 suits a 32 to 36 inch waist.

The original version of this guide also named the Tillett B4 and B5. Tillett still make the B5, which we do not list, so ask us if you want to compare it with the B6. Whichever you look at, avoid the XL versions: they are wider inside and will not suit the Esprit.
The B6 comes as a Road and Track shell in GRP or carbon and GRP, and as the B6 Screamer, which carries FIA 8855-1999 if your motorsport needs an FIA seat. It side mounts and is supplied as a seat only, so the brackets are separate. Our Tillett seat and bracket compatibility guide shows which Tillett mounts go with which seat.

Fitting one in an Esprit
Even a narrow Tillett shell will usually need some work in an Esprit. Depending on the year and the state of the interior, that may mean clearance around the tunnel, carpet trimming and a custom bracket. Because the roof is so low, the seat will often need a bespoke mounting to sit lower than standard.
Given how much depends on the detail, we strongly recommend a specialist garage or fabricator who knows classic Lotus. The seat has to be positioned precisely for comfort, safety and a correct driving position, and any modification has to be done to a proper standard. Garreth’s advice is to measure the gap between the tunnel and the door trim at hip and shoulder height, and send us those numbers with your height and waist before you buy anything.
Will a reclining sport seat fit a Lotus Esprit?
We do not recommend any. Even the compact Corbeau SVR met the tunnel or door trim when specialists tried it.
Will a compact bucket like a Sparco Sprint fit?
Usually not. Popular compact buckets are too wide at the shoulders and too square at the base for the Esprit.
Which seats have a realistic chance?
Narrow Tillett shells in their standard width. We list the Tillett B6, which can be ordered at 40cm wide.
Should I choose the XL version?
No. The XL shells are wider and will not suit the Esprit’s cockpit.
Will I need to modify the car?
Expect some work: tunnel clearance, carpet trimming and a custom low mounting, done by a Lotus specialist.
