The largest piece of leather in the car
A front door panel covers more area than a seat back does, so specifying leather here changes the character of a cabin more than any other single part you can order.
It also means this is where the cost of a leather interior really sits. Seats get the credit; the door panels are what make the seats look like they belong.
Sun is the enemy
The top of a door panel sits directly under the side glass and gets more hours of direct sun than anything else in the interior. Leather there dries first and cracks first.
Feeding it twice a year is what stops that, and it takes ten minutes for both doors. If the car lives outside and that maintenance is not going to happen, vinyl gives a similar look at lower cost with none of the upkeep.
Where it sits
Leather, alcantara and leather and alcantara are the upper price tier on front panels, and unusually all three cost the same. On the bench range alcantara sits above leather, so this is the one place the two are level.
