Where a leather interior is finished or given away
Leather seats with vinyl rear door panels is the compromise most part-trimmed cars end up with, and it is visible. The materials sit next to each other under the same light, and the difference in how they take that light is obvious from the back seat.
If the fronts are being done in leather, the rears are what make it read as a leather interior rather than leather seats.
The easier life back here
Rear panels get less sun than the fronts, because the glass is smaller and often shaded, and they take almost no contact in a car where the back doors are rarely opened.
That makes leather a lower maintenance proposition here than it is up front. It still wants feeding, but the rear panels are usually the last part of an interior to show their age rather than the first.
