The panel where leather earns its keep
Leather is the only material here that improves with use. An armrest gets more use than anything else in the interior, so it is the panel where that quality shows soonest.
A leather armrest that has been fed once or twice a year looks better at five years old than it did new. A vinyl one looks its best on day one and works downhill from there.
The care is not optional
An armrest sits under the side window where the sun reaches it, and it takes hand contact every journey. Leather left unconditioned in that position dries and then cracks along the edge where your arm rests.
It is a ten minute job twice a year. If that is not going to happen, vinyl gives a similar look with none of the upkeep, and it costs less.
