What Sports Seats Can I Fit in My Pontiac Firebird?
Seat fitting guide
The Pontiac Firebird ran through four generations, from the late 1960s muscle car to the sleek 1990s Trans Am, and one thing never changed: a low, snug, driver focused cockpit. That seating position is a big part of the appeal, but it makes aftermarket seats a little trickier to choose than in a bigger car.
Firebird owners ask us regularly which bucket seats and reclining sports seats will go in, and the answer depends on the generation and the space in the cabin. This guide covers the Planted Technology brackets for each car, the seats we suggest for each generation, the size limits we work to, and the runners and side mounts that finish the job.
- We list Planted Technology brackets for 1967 to 1969, 1970 to 1974, 1982 to 1992 and 1993 to 2002 cars
- Each bracket bolts to the factory seat mounting points
- Our guideline: under about 580mm at the shoulders and 500mm at the base
- First and second generation cars suit the slimmest seats
- Third and fourth generation cars take a few wider and taller seats
- The bucket seats named here are FIA 8855-1999; the recliners are road and track seats

Planted Technology brackets for the Firebird
The bracket is where every Firebird seat swap starts. We list Planted Technology brackets made for the car, each one picking up the factory seat mounting points in the floor, so there is no cutting or welding and the job can be undone later. They are steel, and the part numbers follow the generations:
- 1967 to 1969: Planted SB219
- 1970 to 1974: Planted SB220
- 1982 to 1992 Firebird and Trans Am: Planted SB140
- 1993 to 2002 Firebird and Trans Am: Planted SB059, shared with the Camaro of the same years
We do not list a Planted bracket for 1975 to 1981 cars, so for those, send us the year and we will look at the options. Trans Am is a trim name Pontiac used across most of the Firebird’s life, so always give us the year as well as the badge.
Planted drill their brackets with slots for the runners of the major seat makers, including the Sparco and OMP 345mm base pattern and the narrower Cobra pattern. Side mount bucket seats go on side mounts bolted to the bracket. Our guide to seat bolt patterns explains the widths.

First generation Firebird (1967 to 1969)
The first generation has one of the tightest cabins of the four. The sloping roofline and the original trim leave little headroom or width, so we suggest slim, low profile bucket seats and compact recliners.
For fixed back buckets, the Sparco Sprint, Sparco Evo QRT, Cobra Monaco Pro, OMP Champ-R and OMP TRS-E are narrow at the shoulders and short enough for the roofline while still holding you properly. If you would rather have a recliner, the Sparco R100 and R500 and the Corbeau SVR all have a slim shape. The Cobra Daytona is Cobra’s widest recliner at 580mm across, so measure your cabin before choosing it. These seats suit drivers with roughly a 30 to 34 inch waist best.
Second generation Firebird (1970 to 1981)
The second generation keeps the muscle car character with a little more room in the cockpit, but the roofline is still low, so compact seats are still the way to go.
The same bucket seats are our picks here: Sparco Sprint, Sparco Evo QRT, Cobra Monaco Pro, OMP Champ-R and OMP TRS-E. For road and occasional track use they strike a good balance between comfort and support. The Sparco R100 and R500, Corbeau SVR and Cobra Daytona recliners are the comfortable choice for longer drives, and they sit well with the retro interior.
Third generation Firebird (1982 to 1992)
The third generation brought a more aerodynamic body and a slightly roomier cabin, which opens up a few more options while keeping a snug fit.
Everything above still works, and there is room to go a little wider with the Sparco Evo L QRT, Mirco GT, Mirco Classic and OMP ARS-R, which have more shoulder and hip room for drivers with roughly a 30 to 36 inch waist. For a recliner, the Corbeau RRS and RRB add height and width for comfort without feeling oversized in this car.
Fourth generation Firebird (1993 to 2002)
The last Firebird kept the low cabin and driver focused layout, so width and height still need care. All the seats above remain suitable, and the larger buckets, the Sparco Evo L QRT, OMP ARS-R and Mirco GT, give the most room while staying inside the limits we work to. For recliners, the Corbeau RRS and RRB again give more leg and shoulder room than the compact SVR or Sparco R100.

Seat width and size guidelines
The seats named in this guide are under about 580mm wide at the shoulders and 500mm at the base, and that is the limit we work to for the Firebird cabin. A seat wider than that risks fouling the door cards, the transmission tunnel or the seat belt mountings.
In the first and second generation cars we suggest seats for roughly a 30 to 34 inch waist. The Sprint, Monaco Pro and TRS-E have narrow shoulders and hips that sit between the trim. The recliners are more open and suit a wider range of drivers; the Cobra Daytona sits right at our 580mm limit, so it is the one to measure for most carefully.
The third and fourth generation cars give a little more room, so the wider Evo L QRT, Mirco GT, Mirco Classic and OMP ARS-R fit drivers of roughly 30 to 36 inches. The Corbeau RRS and RRB have a taller backrest and a more open shoulder area, which is why we keep them for the later cars with a little more headroom. The widest of these seats come close to our 580mm and 500mm limits, so measure your own car before ordering.
Bucket seat or recliner
The fixed back buckets in this guide are homologated to FIA 8855-1999, so they suit track days, sprints and racing as well as a road car where you want a focused driving feel. They have high side bolsters and take a six point harness.
The reclining seats are road and track seats, not FIA approved. They are the better choice for a Firebird that is mainly driven on the road: adjustable backrests, supportive bolsters and a trim that is comfortable on a long run, with harness slots on some models for a four point harness.

Runners, side mounts and fitting
With the Planted bracket in the car, a base mount seat either bolts straight to the bracket or goes on a pair of sliding runners so you can adjust the seat position or share the car with another driver. Match the runners to the seat’s own bolt pattern:
- Cobra recliners such as the Daytona: Cobra’s narrower 291mm pattern, so Cobra runners.
- Sparco and OMP base mount seats: the 345mm by 271mm pattern, so Sparco or Endurance Motorsport runners made for it.
- Corbeau recliners (SVR, RRS, RRB): Corbeau make runners in more than one width, so match the runner width to the bracket pattern you are using. Corbeau and Recaro parts do not mix.
Side mount bucket seats use a pair of side mounts bolted to the bracket in place of runners. Choose side mounts that suit the seat, and for an FIA seat check what the seat maker specifies. Garreth’s advice is to send us the year of the car, your height and waist size, and the seat you have in mind, and we will list the bracket, runners or side mounts that go with it.
Is there a direct fit seat bracket for the Pontiac Firebird?
Yes. We list Planted Technology brackets for 1967 to 1969, 1970 to 1974, 1982 to 1992 and 1993 to 2002 cars, each using the factory mounting points.
What is the widest seat that fits a Firebird?
We work to about 580mm at the shoulders and 500mm at the base, and suggest slimmer seats for the first and second generation cars.
Which bucket seats fit an early Firebird?
Slim FIA seats such as the Sparco Sprint, Cobra Monaco Pro, OMP Champ-R and OMP TRS-E.
Can I fit a reclining seat in a Firebird?
Yes. The Sparco R100 and R500 and Corbeau SVR are slim enough for every generation, the wider Cobra Daytona needs measuring for, and the Corbeau RRS and RRB suit the later cars.
Do I need runners?
Only if you want to slide the seat. Base mount seats can bolt straight to the bracket, and bucket seats use side mounts.
