Top 5 Reclining Seat Choices For Your Vauxhall Astra Mk2 Adaption, Including Our Fitting Guide

The Vauxhall Astra Mk2 ran from 1984 to 1991. In some markets it was sold as the Opel Kadett. The GTE version, particularly the 16-valve from 1988, sold well enough that good ones are still around. The cars that survive tend to have owners who use them: club track evenings, a build that went further than originally planned. The original seats were fine for a family hatchback in 1985. They are thirty years old and they show it.

Two fitting options exist for this car on the site. The direct-fit subframe, covered in our Vauxhall Astra Mk2 reclining guide, replaces the whole seat mounting arrangement and includes a runner. This one, the adaption subframe, connects to the car’s existing mounting points in the floor. It costs less to buy, but there is no runner in the box. You add one separately if you want fore-aft adjustment. Without a runner, the seat sits exactly where you bolt it. Cameron works through these choices with people fairly regularly, and if you want to talk through which option suits your car before ordering, the number is at the bottom of the page.

  • One adaption subframe for the Astra Mk2: Cobra part COB26MBL327
  • No runner included in the frame price, unlike the direct-fit version
  • Add a runner for fore-aft adjustment, or bolt fixed for a set position
  • Cobra recliners and Corbeau recliners both fit via the 291mm route

The frame route into an Astra Mk2

There is one frame we sell for this car: the Cobra Adaption Subframe (14507), at £231.66 inc VAT per seat. Part number COB26MBL327.

The adaption subframe bolts to the factory mounting points in the Mk2 floor. No drilling on a standard floor. What it does not include is a runner. A seat bolted to the adaption part alone sits in a fixed position, with no fore-aft travel. That is the right answer for a single-driver track car where the position is known and does not change. If you want adjustment, you order a runner alongside the frame. The Cobra Premium Sliding Runner (120664, £84 inc VAT each) covers one seat. Two seats need two runners; the two-runner set (214851, £117.60 inc VAT) covers both sides at a better rate than two singles.

Both runner options are the 291mm handle width, which is what the Cobra subframe takes. Tell Cobra which seat is going on the frame when you order; they pair the runner and frame before it goes out.

Cobra Adaption Subframe

Part 14507, £231.66 inc VAT per seat. No runner included. Takes Cobra 291mm pattern recliners and Corbeau recliners drilled for both 291mm and 345mm patterns.

The number that decides it

One bolt pattern in play for this car. Cobra recliners use 291mm x 330mm, and that is what the adaption subframe is built for. Corbeau recliners carry holes for both 291mm and 345mm, which is why the three Corbeau options in this guide appear in the same fits column as the Cobras. The 291mm holes are the ones in use; the 345mm holes sit empty on this frame. All five seats fit the single route here.

Corbeau Sportline RRS: the all-rounder

The RRS is the workhorse Corbeau and the one we come back to most often for Astra Mk2 owners. The pair listing (187173) at £984 inc VAT puts both sides in one order, which is usually the right call when both front seats are being replaced at the same time. The backrest has enough articulation in the recline mechanism to dial in a comfortable angle for road driving and a stiffer position for track work, and the cloth, vinyl or leather options all come in at the same entry price. Heated versions exist if the Mk2 goes out in winter.

The Low Base version (17238, £498 inc VAT per seat) has a shorter base shell. Worth knowing if headroom becomes a consideration once the driving position has dropped with the Cobra subframe, though the Mk2 is not a particularly tight car and most people do not need it.

Driver size and fitment: Corbeau publish the RRS as suitable for 32 to 38 inch waist and all heights.

  • Pair (187173) at £984 inc VAT for driver and passenger in one order
  • Low Base single (17238) at £498 inc VAT for tighter headroom situations
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights
  • Cloth, vinyl or leather at the same entry price; heated option available
  • Drilled for 291mm and 345mm: fits via the 291mm route on the Cobra subframe

Cobra Daytona: the Cobra pick

The Daytona is built to order through Cobra’s Signature range, so the trim finish is chosen at the time you order rather than picked off a shelf. On an 80s hatchback that is being used seriously, the ability to spec the colour and stitching to suit the interior makes a difference. The shoulder bolsters are more pronounced than on the RRS, which means better lateral support in corners and a bit more effort getting in and out of a four-door. Heating and lumbar are both available at the same build stage. The Tartan Edition (226799, £899 inc VAT) is the ready-to-order version if you want a defined look without going through a bespoke build.

Driver size and fitment: Cobra publish the Daytona as suitable for 32 to 38 inch waist and all heights.

  • From £599 inc VAT, built to order in your trim finish
  • Tartan Edition (226799) at £899 inc VAT, ready to order
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights, 13.5kg
  • Heating and lumbar available at the Signature build stage
  • 291mm x 330mm: straight onto the Cobra adaption subframe

Corbeau PSR: the value entry

The PSR pair (196407) covers both sides at £558 inc VAT. Per seat that works out at £279. The backrest is simpler than the RRS but it reclines, it holds more structure through the shoulders than any three-decade-old factory seat that is still in use, and the build holds up to regular wear. For an Astra Mk2 where both seats need replacing and cost is part of the decision, this is usually the starting point.

Driver size and fitment: Corbeau publish the PSR as suitable for 32 to 38 inch waist and all heights.

  • Pair (196407) at £558 inc VAT for driver and passenger in one order
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights
  • Cloth and vinyl options at the same entry price
  • Drilled for 291mm and 345mm: fits via the 291mm route on the Cobra subframe
  • The least expensive seat in this guide

Corbeau SVR: both sides, different backrest shape

The SVR sits taller and more upright through the backrest than the RRS. Where the RRS has a swept-back shoulder shape, the SVR goes straight up, which suits drivers who prefer a more vertical position for road driving. The vinyl pair (196752) at £1,020 inc VAT puts both seats in one order. The heated pair (239142, £1,248 inc VAT) is worth considering for a Mk2 that goes out in winter; the door seals on a car from 1985 to 1991 are doing their best but they are not keeping the cold out the way a new car does, and heated seats make an early January start considerably more bearable.

Driver size and fitment: Corbeau publish the SVR as suitable for 32 to 38 inch waist and all heights.

  • Vinyl pair (196752) at £1,020 inc VAT for driver and passenger in one order
  • Heated pair (239142) at £1,248 inc VAT for winter use
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights
  • Taller, more upright backrest shape than the RRS
  • Drilled for 291mm and 345mm: fits via the 291mm route on the Cobra subframe

Cobra Misano Anniversary: if the budget runs to it

The Misano Anniversary is the best seat in this guide. The cushioning holds its shape under sustained use in a way the Daytona does not, the lumbar support is built in and it weighs 11.5kg against the Daytona’s 13.5kg. On a track-prepared Mk2 where weight has come out elsewhere, two kilograms per seat is a genuine consideration. It comes through the Signature system, so the trim finish is specced at order time. The Spec 2 (18255, £1,649 inc VAT) is the same seat in a different trim combination if you want an alternative look.

Driver size and fitment: Cobra publish the Misano Anniversary as suitable for 32 to 38 inch waist and all heights.

  • £1,649 inc VAT, built through the Cobra Signature range
  • Misano Anniversary Spec 2 (18255) at £1,649 inc VAT, different trim option
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights, 11.5kg
  • Lumbar built in; heating available at the Signature build stage
  • 291mm x 330mm: straight onto the Cobra adaption subframe

Getting it bolted down

The Cobra Adaption Subframe (14507, £231.66 inc VAT per seat) is the only frame route we sell for this car. One per seat, so two for both sides of the car. The subframe connects to the factory floor mounting points in the Mk2 with no drilling on a standard floor.

The runner is not in the box. A Cobra Premium Sliding Runner (120664, £84 inc VAT each) adds fore-aft adjustment for one seat. The two-runner set (214851, £117.60 inc VAT) covers both sides and works out better than two singles. Both are the 291mm handle width, which is what this subframe takes.

Torque the floor bolts to spec once the seat is on. The seating position will drop compared to standard; check where the seat belt buckle lands before driving because the buckle often ends up somewhere unexpected once the seat has moved down. Tell Cobra the seat at checkout; they pair the runner and subframe before it leaves, which saves a call once the parts arrive.

Common questions

Do I need to drill the floor of my Astra Mk2?

No. The Cobra adaption subframe bolts to the factory mounting points in the floor. No drilling on a standard floor. Torque the bolts to spec and check seat belt buckle clearance once the seat is in position.

What is the difference between the adaption subframe and the direct-fit subframe?

The direct-fit subframe (covered in our Vauxhall Astra Mk2 reclining guide) replaces the complete seat mounting arrangement and includes a runner. The adaption subframe works with the factory mounting points and does not include a runner. A seat on the adaption subframe alone sits in a fixed position; add a runner and you get fore-aft adjustment. Neither is better than the other; they answer different situations.

Do I need to order a runner with the adaption subframe?

Not if you want a fixed seat position. Many single-driver track cars are set once and left there. If you want fore-aft adjustment for different drivers or a road car that needs flexibility, order a Cobra Premium Sliding Runner (120664, £84 inc VAT each). Two seats need two runners; the two-runner set (214851, £117.60 inc VAT) covers both at a better rate than two singles.

The Corbeau is drilled for 345mm as well as 291mm. Does it still fit the Cobra subframe?

Yes. Corbeau recliners carry holes for both patterns. The Cobra subframe takes the 291mm route; the 345mm holes sit empty. The seat bolts down on the 291mm side and the 291mm runner, if ordered, handles the rest.

Would a fixed bucket seat suit my Astra Mk2 better?

If the car is mostly track use and a passenger seat is not a consideration, a fixed-back bucket saves weight and holds you harder in corners. The reclining seats in this guide keep the folding backrest, which is the main reason to choose a recliner in a car you also drive on the road.

What I would actually buy

For most Astra Mk2 owners, the Corbeau RRS pair makes the most sense. Both seats come in one order. The recliner covers a good adjustment range and the price sits in the middle of this guide rather than at the top of it.

If the car is a single-driver setup and the position will be fixed once it is dialled in, start with the Cobra Daytona. It is the most natural Cobra for an 80s hot hatch and the Signature build means it arrives in whatever trim suits the car.

The Cobra Misano Anniversary is the best seat here. It is lighter than the Daytona, the cushioning holds better on a long run, and the lumbar is built in from the start. If the budget allows it, Cameron would not argue with that choice.

How To Fit Recaro SR Seats In A UK Car

Recaro SR seats are Recaro Japan, not part of the European range, so nobody here sells you the fitting kit with the seat. They mount on the 405mm Recaro base pattern, which means a Planted Technology bracket and a Recaro double locking runner per seat. Here is the stack, a worked BMW E46 example with the numbers, and the cars we do this on most.
