Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Rover Maestro, including our fitting guide

Most Maestros have been sitting on the same seats for thirty years. By now the foam has gone flat, the bolsters have given up their shape, and the fabric carries whatever the car has absorbed along the way. Replacing the seat is usually the more practical call on a car of this age, and Cobra make a direct fit subframe that puts a reclining sport seat onto the Maestro’s factory floor without any drilling.

The MG Maestro 2.0 EFi changes that calculation slightly. The frame description has a note worth reading: original Maestro seats are effectively unobtainable now, so if the car has them, keep them somewhere dry and flat before fitting anything new. For the rest of the Maestro range, a reclining seat on the Cobra frame drops the driving position, adds genuine lateral support, and keeps the tilting backrest for daily driving.

  • Frame includes the sliding runner, no separate purchase needed
  • Frame accepts 291mm and 405mm seat patterns; tell us your seat at checkout

The Rover Maestro. The Cobra Direct Fit Subframes is the one fitting frame we list for this car.

The frame route into a Maestro

We stock one fitting frame for the Maestro: the Cobra Direct Fit Subframes, bolting to the existing seat mounting points in the floor. What makes this frame different from most others in this series is that the sliding runner is already in the kit. You do not order the runner separately. Tell us the seat you are fitting at the checkout and the shop puts the matching runner in the box. A side-mounted seat needs adaption bars sold separately, but for any of the five base-mount recliners in this guide, this is a one-part solution.

Cobra Direct Fit Subframes

Product 14479, £231.66 inc VAT a side. Includes base frame and sliding runner. Accepts 291mm and 405mm seat patterns. Tell us your seat at checkout. Priced per frame, which fits one seat.

The number that decides it

Every reclining seat we sell has a base mount pattern. The Cobra Maestro frame is unusual in accepting two of them. Cobra and Corbeau seats use 291mm x 330mm; the frame handles that directly. The Auto Style Type AK uses 405mm x 280mm, which the frame also takes, with a matched runner in the kit. There is one frame for this car, and all five seats in this guide go on it.

One frame, five seatsAll five options in this guide go on the same Cobra frame. The pattern note matters when you are comparing with other builds or other frames, but for the Maestro you just pick the seat and tell us which one at checkout. The frame comes with the right runner in the box.

Cobra Daytona: the starting point for most Maestro builds

The Daytona is where most Maestro builds start. The Cobra frame was designed around Cobra seats and the combination is well proven. It sits you noticeably lower than the standard Maestro driving position, and the chassis responds to that: the steering feels more precise and the car pivots better once your hips are down a couple of inches. The moulded backrest gives real lateral support, more than the factory seat, but it is not so aggressive that it becomes a fight getting out of the car in a car park. At 13.5 kg it is a sensible weight for a car used every day.

  • From £599.00 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • 13.5 kg
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: goes straight on the Cobra Maestro frame

Corbeau SVR: both seats done in one order

The SVR is sold as a pair at £1,020 inc VAT, which makes the per-seat cost roughly comparable to a single Cobra Daytona. On a car where both seats need replacing, the maths works in the SVR’s favour. The shoulder support is deeper than the Daytona’s, which makes a difference when the Maestro sees regular circuit use, and Corbeau list it as suitable for all heights and 32 to 38 inch waists. It is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm patterns; the Cobra Maestro frame picks up the 291mm holes. The pair listing is the standard way to buy it.

  • £1,020 inc VAT a pair (£510 each)
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Deeper shoulder bolsters than the Daytona
  • Listed 4 point compatible
  • Uses 291mm holes on the Cobra Maestro frame

Cobra Le Mans: the seat for serious use

The Le Mans is the seat I point Maestro owners at when the build is getting serious: regular sprints, hillclimbs, track days where the times matter. The shoulder and thigh bolsters are significantly deeper than the Daytona’s and the lateral support changes how the car feels mid-corner. When you are not fighting the seat to stay in position, your arms can do the steering rather than bracing you. It is available through Cobra’s Signature range if you want to specify the trim to match an interior build, which is worth knowing if the rest of the cabin is getting attention. The Heritage version keeps the same 291mm pattern and brings a period-correct finish off the shelf.

  • From £619.00 inc VAT; Le Mans Heritage from £649.00; Carbon Edition from £714.00
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights, 13.4 kg
  • Cobra Signature range available (spacer fabric, vinyl, leather, stitching options)
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: fits the Cobra Maestro frame directly

Corbeau Sportline RRS Low Base: more support, right height

The RRS is the Corbeau that sits between the SVR and a full bucket in terms of how firmly it holds you. The Sportline construction grips more through the shoulders and upper torso, which is the difference when the Maestro is cornering hard. The Low Base version is worth choosing for this car: the Maestro’s roofline is not generous and the Low Base recovers the headroom that a taller seat base takes. It is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm patterns, so the Cobra frame picks up the 291mm holes directly, and it can be run alongside the 291mm seats in this guide if you are mixing driver and passenger choices.

  • From £498.00 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • More lateral support through the shoulders than the SVR
  • Listed 4 point compatible
  • Uses 291mm holes on the Cobra Maestro frame

Auto Style Type AK: the budget route via 405mm

The Type AK is the entry point into this guide. At £282 inc VAT it costs less than half the Cobra Daytona, and the 405mm x 280mm mounting pattern is something the Cobra Maestro frame is built to accept. It suits all sizes and all heights, which makes it useful if you are also doing the passenger seat for someone whose dimensions are different from the driver. The cloth trim and standard bolster profile are not aggressive, and on a project car where the final build is still taking shape, it gives you a functioning seat while you work out what the rest of the car needs. Plenty of Maestros run a permanent pair of these without ever changing them out.

  • £282.00 inc VAT
  • All sizes, all heights
  • Cloth trim, practical bolster profile
  • 4 point compatible
  • 405mm x 280mm pattern: fits via the Cobra Maestro frame's 405mm holes

Getting it bolted down

The Cobra Maestro Direct Fit Subframes is different from most frames in this series: the sliding runner is included in the kit. Order the frame, tell us the seat at checkout, and the shop puts the matching runner in the box. There is no separate runner to find or price up. The frame bolts to the Maestro’s factory seat mounting points without drilling. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before the first drive, because the buckle position often changes once the seat height drops.

One practical note from the frame description: on a British Leyland era car with thirty to forty years on it, the metal around the seat mounting points is worth checking before the new parts arrive. The moment to find any issue is with the old seat out and a torch in hand, not after the frame has been ordered.

Common questions

Do I need to drill the floor of my Maestro?

No. The Cobra Direct Fit Subframes bolt to the factory seat mounting points without drilling. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before your first drive, because the buckle position often changes once the seat height has dropped.

Does the Cobra frame include a runner?

Yes, and this is different from most frames in this series. The Cobra Maestro kit includes the base frame and the sliding runner together. Tell us your seat at checkout and the shop puts the right runner in the box. You do not need to order the runner separately.

Will these seats take a 4 point harness?

Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with harness slots in the backrest. If you are planning to run a harness, tell us when you order and we will make sure the complete setup works together.

Does the frame fit the MG Maestro 2.0 as well as the standard car?

Yes. The Cobra Direct Fit Subframes listed here fits the standard Maestro and the MG Maestro. There is a practical note in the frame description worth reading: on a British Leyland era car of this age, the metal around the seat mounting points is worth checking properly before the frame arrives. The moment to find any issue is with the old seat out, not after. The MG Maestro 2.0 EFi is at the point where original seats are effectively unobtainable, so the frame description recommends keeping originals somewhere dry and flat if the sport seat is going in.

Is there a fixed bucket seat guide for the Maestro?

We do not currently have a separate bucket seat vehicle guide for the Maestro. If a reclining seat is not what you are looking for, get in touch and we can look at what the floor options are for your specific build.

What I would actually buy

For a Maestro used daily where the original seats have given up: the Corbeau SVR pair. At £1,020 inc VAT for two seats with one frame order per side, it is a straightforward way to replace both seats at once, and the shoulder support is better than the Daytona for a car that sees any circuit use. If you are doing just the driver seat first, the Cobra Daytona at £599 inc VAT is the natural starting point.

For circuit work, sprints or hillclimbs: the Cobra Le Mans. The deeper shoulder and thigh bolsters make a real difference when the car is working, and the Cobra Signature range means you can specify the finish if the rest of the interior is getting attention at the same time.

On a budget, or as a first seat while the build settles: the Auto Style Type AK. At £282 it does the job and leaves money for other parts of the project. More Maestros than you might expect run these permanently.
