Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Mazda MX-5 Mk4 (ND), including our fitting guide
Mazda MX-5 Mk4, ND chassis
Cameron took one of these last week, and it is a question we get most months. Bloke with an ND, wants a proper sport seat in it, has read three forum threads and come away less certain than he started. It happens a lot with this car.
The ND is a small car and Mazda meant it. They went back the other way after the NC, so the cabin is tighter, the tunnel is close to your right leg, and with the roof up there is not much between your head and it. Garreth’s first question is always the same one: how tall are you and is the roof usually up or down.
The mounting, at least, is settled. One Planted bracket, one set of Sparco runners, and that pair takes every seat below.
- One Planted bracket (SB248) and one Sparco runner kit take all five of these seats
- Planted price ONE bracket, so a pair of seats means two of them in the basket
- The Corbeau RRB and SVR are sold as pairs, the three Sparco seats are single seats
- Low roof with the top up, which is why the SVR is on the list

What goes under the seat
Two parts do the whole job. The Planted bracket for the ND chassis, part SB248, replaces the factory runners and gives you a flat base. The Sparco runner kit sits on that and gives you back the fore and aft movement. Seat bolts to the runner.
What goes under the seat
Every seat on this page bolts to that same stack. The only thing that changes is the top box.
The reason one runner kit covers seats from two different brands is the bolt pattern. Sparco use 345mm by 271mm. Cobra use 291mm, which only Cobra runners take. Corbeau drill theirs for both, so a Sparco runner picks them up quite happily, and Sparco say as much on the kit: it suits any base mount seat on the same platform, OMP and Corbeau included.
Count carefully when you order, because Planted price a bracket as one side of the car.
If your car is actually a Fiat 124 Spider or an Abarth 124, same platform, same factory. Send us the registration and we will confirm it before anything ships.
Sparco R100, £282.00
The one most people end up in, and Cameron will tell you to stop reading here and just buy it. Tubular steel frame, 13kg, cloth, Road and Track approval. It is listed for all waist sizes and for drivers over and under six foot, which is the widest fit window on this page and worth a lot in a car this size.
You will find one in almost anything. Minis, Imprezas, vans. That is not a criticism.

Sparco R500, £328.99
Here is where the two of them fall out. Cameron reckons the R100 does everything an MX-5 needs and the fifty quid is better spent on the runners or a set of belts. Garreth has sat in both in the showroom and says the R500 holds you better through a quick corner, and on a car you actually press on that is worth the difference.
Steel frame, fabric, 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights, and it is on the same 345mm pattern so nothing changes underneath. There is a Sky trim at £349.00 if you want the lighter look. Our honest steer: sit in both if you can get to Nottingham, because this one really is personal.
Corbeau Sportline RRB, £996.00 the pair
Read that price carefully. Corbeau sell their main lines as pairs, so it covers both seats where the Sparco figures above are for one. Otherwise it looks like a wild jump when it is not.
The RRB is the most upright of the three Sportline shells. Black vinyl with a cloth centre, base mount, no head support, 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights. Upright is the point of it: in a cabin this tight, a back that sits up straight hands you a bit of room you did not have.
Corbeau SVR, £1,020.00 the pair
Also a pair. The SVR is the seat we point at low roof sports cars, and an ND with the roof up is exactly that, which is why it earns a place here over seats that would be fine in a saloon. Cameron wrote the reasoning up properly: Why We Recommend the Corbeau SVR for Low-Roof Sports Cars.
Black vinyl, base mount, no head support, and handed, so there is one for each side of the car. Heated and tartan versions exist too. Ring us and we will price whichever you fancy.
Sparco SPX, £2,815.79
Back to a single seat, and a very different one. Carbon fibre, part SPA00974ZNR, built as the first carbon reclining seat Sparco sold to the public to the same specification they supply car manufacturers. Made in Italy, out of the materials that go into OEM supercar seats. 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights, four point harness compatible.
Cameron pulls a face at putting ten R100s worth of seat in an MX-5 and he is not wrong on the maths. Garreth has sold a few, always to someone building an ND properly rather than tidying one up, and they knew exactly what they were buying. It bolts to the same bracket and runners as the £282 seat, so the car does not care either way.

Common questions
How many brackets and runners do I need?
One of each per seat. Planted price a bracket as a single side, so both seats means two brackets and two runner kits.
Why are the Corbeau prices so much higher?
They are pair prices. Corbeau sell their main lines as pairs, so the RRB and SVR figures cover two seats, where the three Sparco prices are for one.
Will a Sparco runner really take a Corbeau seat?
Yes. Corbeau drill their recliners for the 345mm Sparco pattern and the 291mm Cobra one, and the Sparco kit is cut for 345mm. Sparco name OMP and Corbeau base mount seats as compatible on the kit itself.
Do I need to drill the floor?
Not on a standard car. The bracket picks up the factory seat mounting points. Torque the floor bolts, then the runner to the bracket, then the seat, and check your belt buckle still falls where you can reach it before you drive it.
I want a bucket seat instead
Different route, written up separately: Top 5 Bucket Seats For Your Mazda MX-5 Mk4 (ND), which uses a PCI kit carrying the frame, slider and side mounts in one part.
