Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Fiat Punto Mk2, including our fitting guide

The Punto Mk2 has been club motorsport scenery for the better part of two decades. In Sporting or HGT trim the chassis is well-sorted enough for an autocross or a circuit evening, and owners tend to know it. The car held its enthusiast value long after the price came down enough that driving it hard stopped feeling extravagant. What has not aged as well is the factory seat: flat in the bolsters, soft in the base on anything moving quickly, and on most Punto Mk2s by now also 20-plus years old.

A reclining sport seat on a fitting frame sorts both problems without making the car difficult to use daily. You keep the fore-aft adjustment and the tilting backrest, and you gain the side support the standard seats never quite managed. Two direct-fit subframes exist for the Punto Mk2: one from Cobra, one from Sparco. Which one you buy pins the seats you can run.

  • Two frame routes in stock: Cobra subframe (291mm) and Sparco subframe (345mm)
  • Corbeau recliners are drilled for both patterns and fit either frame on this car
  • The Sparco subframe is listed for the Punto Mk2 from September 1999 onwards
  • Every seat in this guide is listed as 4 point harness compatible
  • Both subframes bolt to the factory floor mounting points, no drilling required

The Fiat Punto Mk2. The subframe you choose decides which of the five seats below can go in it.

The two frame routes into a Fiat Punto Mk2

We stock a direct-fit subframe for the Punto Mk2 from two brands. A subframe bolts to the factory floor in place of the standard seat runners and sets the final seat height, and the brand of subframe determines which seats can go on it. That decision comes before the seat choice. Both bolt to the Punto Mk2 factory mounting points without drilling on a standard floor. One note on the Sparco: it is listed for the Punto Mk2 from September 1999 onwards, so if your car falls outside that window check with us before ordering.

291

Cobra subframe

£231.66 inc VAT per side, sold individually (one seat position). Pairs with 291mm runners and takes the Daytona and the Corbeaus. Tell us which seat you are fitting when you order.

345

Sparco subframe

£86.68 inc VAT per side, RHD driver and passenger listed separately. Listed for the Punto Mk2 from September 1999 onwards. Pairs with 345mm runners and takes the R100, the R500 Sky and the Corbeaus.

The number that decides it

Reclining seats bolt down through a base mount pattern, and on the Punto Mk2 two of them matter. Cobra recliners use 291mm x 330mm, which matches the Cobra subframe. Sparco recliners use 345mm x 271mm, which matches the Sparco subframe. The two patterns do not cross over, so a Cobra seat will not go on a Sparco subframe and a Sparco seat will not go on a Cobra one. Corbeau drill their recliners for both, which is why the PSR and the RRS appear in both columns below and are the only seats in this guide that fit either frame without adaptation.

Pick the seat firstThen buy the subframe that matches its pattern. The PSR and the RRS are the only seats here that work on either frame without adaptation. If you are weighing combinations for a specific budget or build, Cameron at GSM does this most days and is happy to sort it before you commit to anything.

Corbeau PSR: best of both routes

The PSR is the seat to pick if you are not certain which subframe you want yet, or if you want both sides done in one order without locking into one bolt pattern first. It is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, so it goes straight onto the Cobra subframe as easily as the Sparco one. Corbeau sell it as a pair, which is how most people buy it: one order, both seat positions done. The fit range covers 32 to 38 inch waists and all heights, which takes in most Punto Mk2 owners without anyone sitting right at the edge. It is also the cheapest way into either route on this car, and it holds up well.

  • £558 inc VAT for a pair
  • Both 291mm and 345mm patterns: fits either subframe on this car
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Sold as a pair

The R100 is the recliner we sell more of than anything else across the range. On the Punto Mk2 it works well for the same reason it works on any compact car: the open base does not fight you getting in through a three-door aperture, and there is a good range of fore-aft adjustment in the runner. Sparco list it for all waist sizes and for drivers both over and under six foot, which matches what we see on the counter. Very few people cannot find a comfortable position in an R100. Available in cloth, vinyl and the Martini Racing edition. Goes on the Sparco subframe with the Sparco runner kit.

  • From £282 inc VAT each, £540 inc VAT for a black cloth pair
  • All waist sizes, over and under six foot
  • Cloth, vinyl and Martini Racing edition available
  • 4 point harness compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern: Sparco subframe only on this car

Cobra Daytona: the support pick on the Cobra route

The Daytona is Cobra’s entry point into their recliner range and the one Cameron points most Cobra enquiries at, because the bolstering is a real step up from either Sparco without the price going past £700 on the standard build. The shoulder and thigh sections hold you through corners properly rather than letting you perch on them, and the build-to-order Signature system means the trim is your call: spacer fabric, vinyl or leather, contrast stitching, optional heating or lumbar. If you want something off the shelf rather than specced, the Tartan Edition is available now. On the Punto Mk2 it goes on the Cobra subframe with 291mm sliding runners, self-contained for one side. The Daytona is sold per seat and a pair means two in the basket.

  • £599 inc VAT per seat; Tartan Edition at £899 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights, 13.5kg
  • Signature trim options, optional heating and lumbar
  • 4 point harness compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra subframe only on this car

The R500 Sky sits above the R100 in Sparco’s recliner range and the difference is at the shoulders and upper back. The backrest is taller, the shoulder support wraps further, and dual density foam in the base and backrest holds its shape better over longer stints at a circuit. Sky is Sparco’s vinyl option, which is worth picking if the Punto does wet track days and the seat needs wiping down afterwards. Both the R100 and the R500 share the 345mm pattern, so switching between them later does not mean touching the subframe at all.

  • £697.99 inc VAT for a pair in Sky vinyl
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Dual density foam in base and backrest
  • 4 point harness compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern, same Sparco subframe route as the R100

Corbeau Sportline RRS: the premium pick on either route

The RRS has the classic sculpted backrest shape that most people picture when they think of a reclining sport seat. Like the PSR, it is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, so on the Punto Mk2 you can run it on the Cobra subframe or the Sparco one without any adaptation. Sold as a pair, with heating and trim options available. The Low Base version is worth asking about if the car is lowered and headroom is tighter than standard. The bolstering in the RRS is firmer than the PSR, which tends to suit drivers who know the car well and want to sit better placed in it on a circuit.

  • £996 inc VAT for a pair
  • Both 291mm and 345mm patterns: fits either subframe on this car
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Heating option available; Low Base version available on request
  • 4 point harness compatible

Getting it bolted down

Both subframes bolt to the Punto Mk2 factory seat mounting points, so there is no drilling on a standard floor. Between subframe and seat go the sliding runners, and they follow the same 291mm or 345mm pattern logic as the frames. Torque the floor bolts properly before the first drive and check seat belt buckle clearance, because a sport seat typically moves the buckle to a new position. One note on the Sparco subframe: it is listed per side with RHD driver and passenger positions listed separately, so a pair means two in the basket. Corbeau runner listings are labelled by handle width, not bolt pattern. The Sportline handle is the correct option for both the PSR and the RRS.

Common questions

Do I need to drill the floor of my Fiat Punto Mk2?

No. Both subframes bolt to the factory seat mounting points on a standard Punto Mk2 floor. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before driving, because a sport seat typically moves the buckle to a new position.

Can I put a Cobra seat on the Sparco subframe, or a Sparco seat on the Cobra one?

No. Cobra recliners use 291mm x 330mm and Sparco recliners use 345mm x 271mm, and the two patterns do not line up. The Corbeau PSR and RRS are the exception, drilled for both patterns and compatible with either subframe on the Punto Mk2.

Which years of Fiat Punto Mk2 does the Sparco subframe cover?

The Sparco subframe is listed for the Fiat Punto Mk2 from September 1999 onwards. If your car is from earlier in the production run, check with us before ordering. The Cobra subframe listing does not carry a year restriction in its current listing, but if you are near a production boundary it is worth confirming the build date before committing.

Why are both subframes sold per side rather than as a pair?

Both manufacturers price the subframe as a single unit covering one seat position. The Sparco subframe has RHD driver and passenger positions listed separately. The Cobra subframe is listed as a single unit and we need to know which seat position it is going to when you order. A pair of seats means two subframes in the basket.

Would a fixed bucket seat be better for my Fiat Punto Mk2?

If the car spends most of its time on track, possibly. A fixed back saves weight and holds you harder in the corners. A recliner wins when the Punto is still a daily driver or carries passengers regularly, because the tilting backrest and fore-aft adjustment stay available. If you are weighing both options, get in touch and we can go through the seat and frame choices for this car.

What I would actually buy

If it were my money and the Punto is a car I drive daily but take on circuit evenings: the PSR pair on whichever subframe route suits the rest of the build. At £558 for both seats with bolt patterns that fit either frame, it is the least fuss way to get both sides done without committing to one route first. If I was going Sparco all the way, the R100 pair is hard to argue with as the entry point, and the R500 Sky earns its extra over the R100 if the car sees regular circuit use. The Daytona on the Cobra subframe if I wanted something with real bolstering and a trim I had specified myself. The RRS pair if I wanted the classic Corbeau look and was not on a tight budget. None of the five is a bad call on a Punto Mk2. If you are between two of them, or anywhere near a size boundary, call us on 0115 9893488 and Cameron will sort it before you spend anything.
