The R8’s cockpit is already the part most owners are pleased with. The problem is the factory seats: they hold you fine on the road but they are not built for the way a mid-engine supercar corners. The sidewall comes off an apex faster than almost anything else on UK tarmac, and the stock upholstery lets you know it. That is the conversation we have with most R8 owners who come in: not “my seats are worn” but “the car is faster than the seats”.
A reclining sport seat is the sensible answer for a car people actually use daily. You keep the tilting backrest for motorway runs and rear passengers, you get the lateral support the factory seat withholds, and with the right frame you sit noticeably lower than standard. The R8 has a tight roofline, so seat height is the first number Cameron checks when someone brings one in.

The R8 has two fitting routes in stock: a Cobra direct-fit subframe and a Planted Technology bracket. The Cobra frame bolts to the floor and takes Cobra brand recliners directly, no runners required. The Planted bracket is a flat base that takes any seat in this guide, on runners matched to that seat’s bolt pattern. Both bolt to the factory mounting points and both work on either hand of the car.
One ordering note on the Cobra frames: Cobra lists separate part numbers for the standard R8 (covers Gen 1 from 2006), the Gen 2 (2015-2018), and the lightweight RWS variant (2017-2018). Use the product that matches your year and trim. If your build is not covered by one of those three, ask us before ordering.
From £275.00 inc VAT per side. Gen 1 (2006+), Gen 2 (2015-2018) and RWS (2017-2018) variants in stock. Takes Cobra brand recliners only, on a 291mm x 330mm bolt pattern. Priced per seat.
£222.60 inc VAT per side. First gen (2006-2015) and second gen (2015+) variants. A flat base that takes any seat in this guide, with runners matching that seat's bolt pattern. Priced per seat position.
Every reclining seat in this guide bolts down through a base mount pattern, and there are three at play on this page. Cobra recliners use 291mm x 330mm. Sparco recliners use 345mm x 271mm. The Recaro Sportster CS uses 405mm x 290mm, which is wider than either of the others. None of the three line up with each other, so the runner has to match the seat you pick.
One thing to know up front: the Cobra subframe is brand-specific. It only takes Cobra seats, whatever the bolt pattern. Sparco and Recaro both go on the Planted bracket with matching runners.
| Seat | Bolt pattern | Cobra subframe | Planted bracket |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cobra Daytona | 291 x 330 | Fits | Fits |
| Cobra Misano | 291 x 330 | Fits | Fits |
| Recaro Sportster CS | 405 x 290 | No (Cobra brand only) | Fits |
| Sparco SPX | 345 x 271 | No | Fits |
| Sparco SPR | 345 x 271 | No | Fits |
The Daytona is the seat we point most R8 owners at first. The bolsters at the shoulders and thighs are deeper than anything else in this guide at that price, so your body stays put through corners without needing a harness. It suits the character of the car: wide enough to feel planted, detailed enough to look like it belongs, and built to order through Cobra’s Signature range so you can specify the trim, colour and stitching to match your interior. The direct-fit subframe makes this the cleanest installation available for the R8, no runners required between seat and floor.
Cobra list the Daytona as suitable for 32 to 38 inch waist and all heights, which covers the large majority of buyers. If you are over six foot, check the headroom in your specific R8 trim before committing; the Gen 1 Spyder in particular is the tighter of the two rooflines.
The Sportster CS is the seat for an R8 that still does normal miles. Recaro build it as a road seat first, so the cushion is wide and deep, the backrest reclines properly, and the bolsters hold you without making you climb over them every time you get in. On a car you actually drive rather than trailer, that matters more than another kilo saved.
It is the only seat on this page with a 405mm x 290mm base, so it goes on the Planted bracket with Recaro-pattern runners. Recaro do not list a direct-fit subframe for the R8, so the Planted route is the one. There is also a side airbag version, which is worth asking about if your car has them built into the seats.
The SPX is the most expensive seat on this page and the shell is the reason. It is carbon fibre, where everything else here is steel or fibreglass, and that is where both the weight saving and the money go. Sparco put it at the top of their road recliner range.
In an R8 it is the seat that matches what the rest of the car cost. If you have been looking at the interior thinking it is the one part that does not feel like the price of the car, this is the answer to that.
The SPR sits just under the SPX and swaps the carbon shell for fibreglass. You keep the Sparco recliner mechanism and the same seating position, and you save a good deal of money doing it.
For a road-biased R8 this is the sensible one of the two. It takes the same Planted bracket and the same Sparco runners as the SPX, so if you change your mind later the fitting does not change.
If you want the best reclining seat Cobra make, this is it. The Misano is Cobra’s flagship recliner: the bolsters are deep, the cushioning is where the money went, and it is the seat people refuse to get out of in the showroom. At 11.5kg it is also the lightest seat in this guide despite being the most capable, which is worth knowing for a car where unsprung weight still matters. It comes through the same Cobra Signature system as the Daytona, so the trim, colour, stitching, heating and lumbar are all to your spec. Via the Cobra direct-fit subframe it is the most integrated setup you can build in an R8.
Both frame routes bolt to the R8’s factory seat mounting points, so there is no drilling on a standard floor. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before you drive: a sport seat sits the buckle in a different place to the factory setup, and on a car with side airbag systems it is worth confirming compatibility at the time of ordering. Between the Planted bracket and the seat go the sliding runners, and the runner choice follows the same bolt pattern logic as everything else on this page.
On the Cobra route, the subframe takes the Cobra seat directly: no runners needed, bolt the frame to the floor and the seat to the frame. On the Planted route you add runners in between. One ordering note: the Planted bracket is listed per seat position, so a pair means two brackets in the basket. The Cobra subframe is also listed per seat.
| Your seat | Runners to order | Works on |
|---|---|---|
| Cobra Daytona or Misano (via Cobra subframe) | None needed, direct bolt-on | Cobra subframe only |
| Cobra Daytona or Misano (via Planted) | Cobra 291mm runners, £58.80 per seat | Planted bracket |
| Sparco SPX or SPR | Sparco-compatible runners, £90.00 per seat | Planted bracket |
| Recaro Sportster CS | Recaro-compatible runners, £95.04 per seat | Planted bracket |
| Seat | Bolt pattern | Waist | Height | Weight | Price inc VAT |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cobra Daytona | 291 x 330 | 32 to 38in | All heights | 13.5kg | From £599.00 |
| Recaro Sportster CS | 405 x 290 | All sizes | All heights | Not published | From £1,581.30 |
| Sparco SPR | 345 x 271 | All sizes | All heights | Not published | From £1,858.94 |
| Cobra Misano | 291 x 330 | 32 to 38in | All heights | 11.5kg | From £1,649.00 |
| Sparco SPX | 345 x 271 | 32 to 38in | All heights | Not published | From £2,815.79 |

Not on a standard floor. Both the Cobra subframe and the Planted Technology bracket bolt to the R8's existing factory seat mounting points. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat sits the buckle in a different position to the factory setup.
No. Cobra's direct-fit subframe is brand-specific and only takes Cobra recliners. If you want Sparco or Recaro in your R8, the route is the Planted Technology bracket with matching runners. The Planted bracket handles every bolt pattern in this guide.
Yes. Cobra lists separate subframe part numbers for the standard R8 (2006 onwards, covers Gen 1), the Gen 2 (2015-2018) and the RWS (2017-2018). The Planted Technology bracket also has first gen and second gen listings. Use the product that matches your year and trim, and if you are unsure, ask us with your registration before ordering.
Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with belt slots through the backrest. If you are planning harnesses, let us know when you order and we will make sure the whole setup works together for your R8.
If the car is predominantly track-used, a fixed back saves weight and holds you harder. A reclining sport seat wins when the R8 still does daily miles and motorway runs: you keep the tilting backrest and the comfort margins, and still get the lateral support the factory seat does not offer. If you are weighing both options, get in touch and we will talk through which fits your usage.
For most R8 owners the Cobra Daytona on the Cobra direct-fit subframe is still the straightforward answer. It is the cleanest installation available for the car, the bolsters do the job the factory seat does not, and you can specify the trim to match your interior through Cobra’s Signature range. That is the combination Cameron puts together most often.
On a car at this level, though, most people who walk in have already worked out that the interior is the part not keeping up with the rest of it. If that is you, the Sparco SPX is the one. Carbon shell, and nothing else on this page looks like it sitting in the car.
If the R8 still does normal miles, the Recaro Sportster CS is the seat I would live with. It reclines properly, it is comfortable two hours into a run, and there is a side airbag version if your car needs it. The SPR gives you most of the SPX for a good deal less money. And if the car sees circuit time, the Misano is still the lightest thing here at 11.5kg.
