Most of the 8L A3s that come through the showroom are 1.8Ts. The 150bhp standard spec is a reasonable starting point, and the ones that have been properly modified are usually running 200bhp or above after a remap and an intercooler swap. The S3 with its Quattro system turns up at track day enquiries more often, usually with a harness already on the list. Both versions share the same problem with the factory seats: they are fine for the commute but the bolsters soften quickly once the car is being used harder, and on a car that is thirty years old now, the foam is usually done regardless of what the car has been doing.
The fitting route for the 8L is the Sparco direct-fit sub-frames, which bolt to the factory floor points without drilling. Unlike a Cobra frame, the Sparco unit does not include a sliding runner in the price, so you add the runner kit alongside the frame. The runner kit covers both runners for one seat position. Below are the five reclining seats Cameron recommends for the A3 Mk1.

We stock one fitting frame for the 8L A3: the Sparco direct-fit sub-frames, part 00499073-A3. They attach to the factory seat mounting points on the 8L floor without drilling or fabrication. The frame exposes a 345mm x 271mm bolt pattern, which determines your seat options.
The frames are handed: the RHD driver side and RHD passenger side are different shapes to suit the 8L floor geometry. For a full interior change, you add both variants. Unlike a Cobra frame, the Sparco sub-frame does not include a sliding runner. Add the Sparco runner kit (part 184229) for each seat position. The runner kit is sold as a pair covering one seat.
Part 00499073-A3, £87.00 inc VAT per side. Driver and passenger variants listed separately. Base mount at 345mm x 271mm. Compatible with Sparco, OMP and Corbeau base-mount seats.
Part 184229, £78.00 inc VAT per seat. Sold as a pair of runners covering one seat position. Order one kit per seat, two kits for a full interior change. Not included in the frame price.
The Sparco sub-frame exposes a 345mm x 271mm bolt pattern. Every Sparco seat in this guide uses that pattern directly. The Corbeau PSR and RRS are drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, so they also bolt straight to the Sparco sub-frame. All five seats in this guide are a direct fit for the A3 Mk1 on the Sparco sub-frame with the runner kit.
| Seat | Bolt pattern | Sparco sub-frame + 184229 runner |
|---|---|---|
| Corbeau PSR | 291 or 345 | Fits |
| Sparco R500 | 345 x 271 | Fits |
| Corbeau Sportline RRS | 291 or 345 | Fits |
| Sparco R333 | 345 x 271 | Fits |
| Sparco SPX | 345 x 271 | Fits |
The PSR comes as a matched pair at £558.00 inc VAT. For anyone doing both seats at once, that is the most practical way to begin. Corbeau drills both 291mm and 345mm patterns into the PSR base, so it bolts straight to the Sparco sub-frame without any adapter, and would also work on a Cobra or OMP frame if you changed the setup later. The cloth trim holds up under regular use and suits the A3 Mk1’s cabin well.
Cameron tends to steer 1.8T A3 owners toward the PSR first. The backrest gives noticeably more shoulder support than the standard seat without tightening the fit enough to make road use uncomfortable. A proper pair of sports recliners at a sensible price, which is what most people want when the factory foam has given up.
The R500 is the reclining seat Cameron fits most often into Sparco-framed cars. A single seat comes in at £349.00 inc VAT, and a pair at £686.00. The vinyl Sky trim is easy to clean and holds its shape on a car used in all weather, and the seat itself uses a 345mm x 271mm pattern that fits directly onto the Sparco sub-frame with the runner kit.
For an S3 owner who wants a Sparco seat and is not going to the top of the range yet, the R500 is the natural call. It gives more upper body support than the entry-level Sparco options without the fit restrictions of the R333, and it suits road and track use equally well. The sky vinyl ages better than cloth on an 8L that is going to see some weather.
The RRS pair sits at £984.00 inc VAT. It is the first seat in this guide where you are paying for trim quality as much as support. The vinyl backrest holds its shape better under sustained use than the PSR’s cloth, and the bolster depth is more pronounced without tipping into bucket-seat territory. Both bolt patterns are drilled into the RRS base, so the same route applies as the PSR: straight onto the Sparco sub-frame.
For A3 owners who have had a PSR before and want the next level, the RRS is the natural step. The Sportline RRS is a popular seat across the 8L and 8P A3 range and tends to follow the car rather than getting swapped out, which is usually a good sign.
The R333 single seat is £449.00 inc VAT. The R333 pair (part 187275) is currently out of stock; if you need two seats, you would need to order two singles at £449.00 each. The R333 uses a 345mm x 271mm pattern and bolts to the Sparco sub-frame with the runner kit.
The published fit range for the R333 is 32 to 36 inch waist and under six feet. That is tighter than every other seat in this guide. If you are at 36 inches or above, or over six feet, the R333 will feel too restrictive and the R500 or one of the Corbeau options is the better call. For the right driver, it is a well-built Sparco seat with good circuit manners. If you are unsure whether you are in the fit range, drop us an email or click to open a chat and we will help you confirm it.
The SPX is the top of the Sparco reclining range at £2,816.00 inc VAT for a single seat. The materials are markedly different from everything else in this guide, the bolster support is at a level that makes it a serious track seat, and the construction reflects where it sits in the Sparco catalogue. Most A3 owners who order one have already built the rest of the car around circuit use.
The SPX has no head support, which means it wants a roll cage or harness bar in place for track driving. It is not a seat for a car in a relatively standard state. Garreth tends to see SPX enquiries from S3 owners who have the chassis properly sorted and are doing the seats last. If you are asking whether it is right for your car yet, it probably is not; the R500 covers the same route and suits a broader range of builds.
The Sparco sub-frames attach to the factory seat mounting points on the 8L floor. No drilling is required on a standard car. The frames are handed, so the RHD driver side and RHD passenger side are different part numbers; order both for a full interior change.
The sliding runner is not included in the frame price. Add the Sparco runner kit (part 184229) for each seat, one kit per seat position. For a pair of seats: two frame sides at £87.00 each plus two runner kits at £78.00 each comes to £330.00 inc VAT in hardware before the seats.
Once the seat is installed, check the seat belt buckle clearance. A sport recliner puts the buckle at a different height than the OEM unit, and it is worth confirming the fit before the first drive.

No. The Sparco sub-frames attach to the 8L A3's existing factory seat mounting points on a standard floor, no drilling needed. Torque the bolts to specification and check the seat belt buckle clearance once the seat is in position, as a sport recliner sits the buckle at a different height than the OEM seat.
No. Unlike a Cobra frame, the Sparco sub-frame does not include a sliding runner in the price. Add the Sparco runner kit (part 184229, £78.00 inc VAT) for each seat position. For a pair of seats you need two kits.
Yes. Corbeau recliners, including the PSR and the Sportline RRS in this guide, are drilled for both 291mm and 345mm bolt patterns. The Sparco sub-frame exposes a 345mm x 271mm pattern, so both Corbeau seats bolt straight to it with the Sparco runner kit.
Order two single R333 seats (part 14450) individually. The pair listing (187275) is currently out of stock, but the single seat is available. If you need a pair at a lower price than two singles, the Corbeau PSR pair at £558.00 is the closest alternative.
Yes. We built a separate guide for the Audi A3 Mk2 (8P). That generation uses a Cobra direct-fit frame rather than the Sparco sub-frame, so the seat options and the fitting route are different. Read the A3 Mk2 reclining guide here. For fixed bucket seats across the whole A3 range, see our Audi A3 Vehicle Guides.
For a standard 8L A3 being used on the road with occasional track days, the PSR pair is the call. £558.00 for a matched pair of sports recliners that bolt straight to the Sparco sub-frame, and the dual bolt pattern means the seats travel if you ever change the frame setup. Hardware cost on top of that is two sub-frames at £87.00 each and two runner kits at £78.00 each: £330.00 for the complete installation kit. Most A3 Mk1 owners are starting here.
If you want a Sparco branded seat, the R500 is the one Cameron fits into 8L cars most regularly. It suits road and track use, it comes in a pair for £686.00, and it uses the same Sparco sub-frame route. The R333 is worth considering if you are between 32 and 36 inches waist and under six feet; outside that, the R500 is the better option.
The RRS is for owners who have been through the PSR and want more from the trim and bolsters. The SPX is for an S3 that is genuinely being built for circuit use with a proper interior setup behind it. If you are asking whether the SPX is right for your car yet, the R500 is probably the better place to start.
Ring us on 0115 9893488 with your height and waist and Cameron will tell you which of these five works for your car. Garreth handles the S3 circuit build conversations if the SPX is genuinely on the list.
