Seat trim / Made to order

Choose the seat first, then the tartan

The pattern is the visible part. The shell, driver fit and mounting decide whether the seat works. Start with the standard seat model, sit in it where possible, then choose the tartan and any matching fabric.

Co
The short version

Treat a tartan edition as a specified seat order, not a colour swap added at dispatch. Confirm the pattern, outer trim, stitching, quantity, approval label and lead time before production.

Underlying shellPattern swatchSingle or pairLead timeMatching fabric
01 / Start here

Choose the underlying seat model

A good-looking centre panel cannot fix the wrong shell.

1

Set the intended use

Road, track day, competition and show cars ask different things from the seat and restraint system.

2

Fit the driver

Check hips, thighs, torso length, shoulder position and time in the seat.

3

Fit the car

Measure the outside shell, door and tunnel clearance, then identify the frame and mounting route.

4

Confirm quantity

Some listings are one seat and others are pairs. Read the written quantity.

5

Add the tartan

Choose the pattern and surrounding material only after the seat itself is settled.

Garreth’s preference

Try the plain showroom version when the tartan seat is not held in stock. The cover changes the look; the shell comparison answers the expensive question.

02 / Specification

Write down the complete trim

Names and screen swatches are not enough for a custom order.

03 / Matching panels

Order matching fabric with the seats

Keep the same pattern and supply batch where the cabin must match.

Door cards and a rear bench use more material than they appear to. Ask the trimmer for a cutting estimate, allow for pattern alignment and confirm the usable fabric width before ordering.

Keep an offcut and the order reference. It gives a future trimmer something physical to compare, although a later batch may still differ.

04 / Use

Approval and mountings belong to the seat

Fabric choice does not grant competition or road approval.

Check on the exact product

  • FIA label and date if required
  • Base or side mounting
  • Permitted supports
  • Belt and harness openings
  • Outside shell dimensions

Do not infer from the tartan

  • Competition approval
  • Road legality
  • Seat quantity
  • Driver size
  • Bracket compatibility
Made-to-order does not mean made to fit the driver

Custom trim is normally applied to an existing shell. It does not change the shell dimensions unless the quotation specifically includes foam or construction changes.

05 / Order check

Confirm everything before production starts

Custom work is the point at which assumptions become expensive.

1

Read the current lead time

The product page and order confirmation should state whether the seat is made or trimmed after purchase.

2

Request a swatch if colour is critical

Phone and monitor screens shift colour. Compare material in the cabin light where possible.

3

Approve the written specification

Check model, size, pattern, outer material, stitching, quantity and delivery details.

4

Read cancellation and return terms

Made-to-order or personalised goods can be treated differently from stocked products.

5

Inspect on arrival

Check the specification before mounting or marking the seat.

06 / Questions

Tartan seat questions

Is a tartan seat made to order?

Most tartan editions are trimmed to the chosen specification, so confirm lead time, cancellation and return terms before ordering. The current product page controls.

Can I choose the tartan pattern?

Where the listing offers a choice, select the pattern on the product page. Screen colours vary, so request or inspect a swatch when the exact shade matters.

Should I order matching fabric at the same time?

Yes if door cards, a rear bench or another trim panel must match. Fabric woven or supplied in another batch can show a shade difference under daylight.

Does tartan change how the seat fits?

The mounting normally follows the underlying seat model. Extra seams or padding can slightly alter the feel, so driver fit and the exact product specification still need checking.

Can a tartan seat carry FIA approval?

Yes where the exact seat carries a current FIA label and the trim is part of that supplied model. Check the label, date and event rules. The pattern itself is not an approval.

Are tartan reclining seats sold singly or as a pair?

It varies. Read the quantity on the product page and quotation. Never infer quantity from the photograph or price.

Can tartan fabric be cleaned like vinyl?

No. Follow the maker’s fabric care instructions. Test any cleaner on a hidden area and avoid soaking the centre panel or rubbing the wool aggressively.

Can I return a custom tartan seat?

Made-to-order and personalised goods can have restricted cancellation and return rights. Confirm the specification and terms before production starts.
