Why a narrow shell suits an older roadster
A TR4 cockpit is narrow by modern standards and the sills are wide. This is one of the few genuinely supportive seats that goes in without the bolsters fouling something.
The low back is the other half of it. In an open car a tall shell puts the headrest surround into your sightline over your shoulder, and on a car of this age you are relying on that over the shoulder look rather than on mirrors.
What it changes
A TR4 with a proper seat is a noticeably different car to drive quickly. The originals were designed for comfort in a straight line, and any lateral support they offer is incidental.
Nothing is drilled if you use the correct frame, so the car goes back to standard whenever you want. On a car of this value that is the point.
The measurements
750mm high, 460mm across the shoulders, 720mm front to back, on a 400mm base, at 7kg.
The 400mm base is the figure that matters. That is the width down at floor level, between the sills and clear of the transmission tunnel, and it is what gets this seat into cars where a normal one will not go. Standard sports seats have a base in the 500mm to 560mm range and simply foul the tunnel or the sill top rails.
Measure your own car at floor level between the sill and the tunnel, and compare it to 400mm. If it is close, send us the figure and we will check it against a seat before you order.
