Someone in the back of a car has no wheel, no door pull within easy reach and no pedals to brace against. On a leather bench they slide across it in corners.
Alcantara is the material that stops that happening, and on a rear seat that is a comfort argument rather than a competition one.
What it costs
On the bench range alcantara sits above leather, which is not true anywhere else in this range. The headrests, armrest and door panels price the two materials level. So a full alcantara interior costs its premium here.
The two piece backrest itself adds nothing over the solid version. That part is free.
Where it will wear
The front edge of the base, where people slide across getting in, and the top of the folding section if anything is carried on it. Both go shiny before the rest of the bench does.
Leather and alcantara costs the same and puts leather on exactly those edges.
