The Recaro Ergomed E, part 153.00.1, is the top-specification reclining road seat in the Recaro Comfortline range: it carries features that no other product in the standard Recaro catalogue offers at this price point, including an electric height and manual tilt adjustment for the seat base, a separate Airmatic lumbar system with individual air chambers, and an optional universal side airbag. It is a significant investment and it is designed for the driver who covers substantial daily mileage and treats seat comfort as a practical requirement rather than an optional upgrade.

The Airmatic lumbar system is the key differentiator from the Expert and Specialist ranges: it uses separately adjustable air chambers rather than a mechanical lumbar cushion, which allows the driver to tune the support shape to their specific spine curvature. The seat cushion extends for thigh support, the headrest adjusts for height and tilt, and the optional RECARO climate package adds both heating and the Vent system for warm-weather use. An armrest is available as an additional cost option. The seat is available for right-hand-drive driver side and passenger side positions as a variable listing, confirming the seat-specific mounting differences between RHD positions.

The Ergomed E is heavier and more complex than the Expert or Specialist seats below it and is not a seat for anyone who wants simplicity. It is for long-distance users, professional drivers, and anyone with a specific spinal support requirement that a standard automotive seat cannot meet. Cover options are Nardo Black with Artista Black or Nardo Grey with Artista Grey. Fixing bolt pattern is 405mm by 290mm, base mount. Seat only: sub-frames and runners are sold separately.

Recaro seat size guide

Recaro competition shells come Standard and XL, the sport recliners are one size, and the S, M and L on the Expert and Specialist are lengths, not widths.

How Recaro size their seats

The Profi SPG and Pro Racer SPG and SPA come Standard for a 32 to 36 inch waist and XL for 36 to 40. The XL is about 35 mm wider through the hips and a few hundred grams heavier. Both are tall shells: we list them for drivers over 6 ft, and a shorter driver sits low in them unless the head support is padded out.

The Pole Position is one size, 32 to 36 inch and better under 6 ft. It comes as the FIA N.G. and as the road-legal ABE in GRP or carbon. The Sportster CS, Cross Sportster CS, Speed, Ergomed, Orthopaed and Style recliners are one size and take a 32 to 38 inch waist.

On the Expert and Specialist the S, M and L are seat lengths and backrest heights for different driver heights, not widths. Take the S if you are short in the leg, the L if you are tall.

Measure yourself first

Four numbers decide whether a seat fits. Take them in the clothes you drive in, and write them down before you compare models.

AWaistAround your natural waist, not your trouser size. Trouser sizes usually run an inch or two under the real figure, and the waist bands on our product pages use the real one.

BSeated hip widthSit on a hard chair with your feet flat and measure straight across the widest point of your hips with a rule or a straight edge, not a tape that follows the curve. This is the number that decides whether a fixed shell is tight.

CShouldersStraight across the back at the widest point. Fixed back seats hold you here, so a shell that is narrow at the shoulders is uncomfortable long before it is unsafe.

DHeight and torsoYour height, and if you are over 6 ft whether that is mostly leg or mostly body. A long body needs a taller shell with the head support set higher.

Before you order

Check the car, not only the driver. Transmission tunnels, door cards and B pillars are what stop a wide shell going in. Our seat mounting and fixing points guide covers what to measure.
Side mount and base mount shells are not interchangeable. Which one you need depends on the car and the subframe, so pick the brackets at the same time as the seat.
If you run a HANS or plan to, filter on HANS friendly. The shoulder openings are cut to clear the collar.
FIA seats carry an expiry date on the homologation label. Check what your championship accepts and how long the seat has left, particularly on discounted older stock.

Will I fit in this seat?
The maker sizes this seat for drivers with a 36in to 38in or 32in to 36in waist. Those are the paper numbers; how a seat actually feels to sit in and climb out of is a different question, and our showroom team sit in these seats every day, so call us with your height and waist and we will give you the honest answer.

What do I need to fit it to my car?
You need the car-specific frame for your vehicle, plus a sliding runner for fore-and-aft adjustment. Tell us your car and we will quote the complete fitting kit in one go. Our sliding runner guide covers the adjustment side.

Does it recline like a normal seat, and what about armrests?
Yes, the backrest reclines, which is the whole point of a sport recliner over a fixed bucket: support in the corners, comfort on the motorway, and access to rear seats. Armrests: not fitted on this model. Our recliner lineup comparison shows how the ranges stack up.

I am a bigger driver. Will it work for me?

Recaro seats are produced in batches for the UK market

We receive Recaro deliveries regularly and hold good stock of the popular models, so many go out quickly.

Demand for the bucket seats is worldwide and production runs to Recaro’s own schedule, so the less common models and trims can take considerably longer. Ask us and we will tell you where a specific seat stands.

If you need a seat for a date, ring us first. We would rather give you an honest lead time up front than have you waiting on a seat that is between production runs.
