This is the generation with the Super Duty 455, which arrived just as American performance was being strangled by emissions regulation and insurance. Pontiac built very few and they are the high point of the era, worth serious money now.
The ordinary Firebirds of these years are a great deal more affordable and a perfectly good starting point.
Which changes the approach depending on the car
If yours is a documented SD-455, keep everything and label it. The bracket picks up the factory mounting points so nothing is cut, and an interior that can be put back exactly is worth real money.
