Ford Escort Cosworth bucket seat guide
1992 to 1996, Group A homologation special
These cars are worth serious money now, and that changes the whole calculation around fitting a seat. A Group A homologation special built in small numbers, the Escort Cosworth has gone from used performance car to genuine collector’s piece, and that history follows every modification made to it.
Both Sparco and OMP’s own fitting frame listings make the same point: reversibility is the only sensible route. A direct-fit sub-frame bolts to the factory mounting points, so the original seats and runners come out whole, go into storage, and go back in when the car changes hands. Drilling the floorpan and fabricating brackets is permanent, and on a Cosworth it is a mark against the car that follows it around every subsequent sale.
This guide covers those reversible fitting frames, the competition seats suited to a car built for rallying and time attack, and the roll cages available for a proper build.
- Both the Sparco (14829) and OMP (15710) sub-frames are direct-fit and reversible, bolting to the factory mounting points so the original seats can go back in unmodified when the car is sold
- Base mount and side mount are both available. Side mount uses the Sparco FIA steel brackets (13876)
- OMP list three roll cage variants for the Escort Cosworth. Two of the listings have a title that does not match their own description text on bolt-in versus weld-in construction; confirm the exact spec with us before ordering
- The Sparco weld-in cage (19348) is confirmed specifically for the 4x4 model
- Harnesses above 3-point need a roll cage or a properly engineered harness bar
Mounting
The Sparco direct-fit sub-frame (14829, part 00499065) at £72.50 is confirmed for the Escort Cosworth 4×4 and brings the floor up to the 345mm x 271mm base-mount pattern, taking Sparco, OMP and Corbeau seats. It is a reversible fit: the frame bolts to the factory mounting points, and the original seats come out whole rather than needing modification to go back in.
The OMP direct-fit sub-frame (15710, part HC778) at £109.25 covers both the 345mm x 271mm pattern and the larger 405mm x 290mm OMP pattern, adding Recaro compatibility. OMP’s own listing makes the same reversibility point independently: this is a Group A homologation special built in small numbers and worth a great deal of money, which should shape how you approach the whole job.
For side mount, the Sparco FIA steel brackets (13876) carry their own FIA approval. Add the Sparco sliding runner kit (14036) for fore-aft adjustment.

Competition bucket seats
Most seats here carry FIA 8855-1999 approval. The OMP Champ-R at £318 and OMP TRS-E Sky at £243 are both lighter fibreglass FIA options, side mount and HANS-compatible. The Sparco Evo QRT at £475 is a dual-mount FIA shell suited to a car built for regular circuit or rally-sprint use.
The Mirco RS1 3D at £372 is another fibreglass FIA option in the same bracket. The Sabelt GT3 at £431, Corbeau Sprint X System 1 at £575 and Corbeau Pro Series X System 1 at £610 sit at the upper end, all built to the newer System 1 or FIA 8855-1999 standard with strong lateral support for a Cosworth being driven properly.
The Endurance Motorsport Club Sport at £209.79 and Auto Style Type RR at £254.60 are the accessible track day options rather than full competition seats.

For a Cosworth used on track days or rally sprints, the OMP Champ-R at £318 is a lighter FIA-rated fibreglass shell that suits the car's rally roots. The Sparco Evo QRT at £475 is the dual-mount option if you want the flexibility of side mount later. For a serious competition build, the Corbeau Pro Series X System 1 at £610 is built to the newer System 1 standard. Talk to us with the seat dimensions and confirm the sub-frame fitment before ordering.
Reclining sport seats
Reclining sport seats are base mount on the Escort Cosworth, fitting the Sparco or OMP sub-frames above. The Auto Style range covers the accessible end: the Type DS at £218.60, the Type AK at £235, the Type MS at £236.60, and the Type JW at £245.60.
The Sparco R333 at £374.56 gives a step up in lateral support. The Corbeau Sportline RRS Limited Edition at £500 is the higher-spec Corbeau option here. At the top, the Sparco SPR at £1549.12 is a premium reclining seat with a level of finish well beyond the mid-range options, suited to a Cosworth getting a proper interior rebuild.

The Auto Style Type AK at £235 is the sensible road-car starting point. The Sparco R333 at £374.56 is worth the jump if the car sees regular track or rally-sprint use. For a Cosworth getting a full interior rebuild, the Corbeau Sportline RRS Limited Edition at £500 or the Sparco SPR at £1549.12 are the seats in this guide built to that standard.
Roll cages
OMP list three cage variants for the Escort Cosworth, priced £764.95, £764.95 and £1671.71, covering the AB/105 and AB/106 part series. The AB/106 series is chromoly (25CRM04) construction, lighter and stiffer than the steel AB/105 series, and supplied partially assembled to reduce installation cost. All three include feet brackets to weld onto the chassis floor, and none include fitting bolts.
The Sparco weld-in cage (19348) at £1238.06 is confirmed specifically for the 4×4 model, attaching to the body shell including the front suspension pick-up points, built to exceed FIA minimum requirements by up to 150 percent, with all shell reinforcement plates included.
Harnesses
The TRS Clubman 3-point bolt-in at £80 and 4-point clip-in at £100 both use the standard seat belt anchor points and do not need a cage. For 4-point competition use, the TRS Magnum 4-point FIA at £205 and the Takata Drift II at £229 are the step up.
For 6-point harnesses, the cage goes in first. The TRS Magnum 6-point Superlite FIA at £245, the Takata Drift III at £270, and the Schroth Profi 3×2 at £370 all suit a caged Escort Cosworth going to competition or serious track and rally-sprint use.

Common questions
Should I keep the original seats?
Yes, if the sub-frame allows it, which both the Sparco and OMP direct-fit frames do. These cars are worth serious money now, and originality carries real value at resale. Store the original seats and runners properly and refit them if the car is sold or returned to standard.
Which sub-frame should I choose?
The Sparco frame (14829) at £72.50 covers the standard 345mm x 271mm bolt pattern, confirmed for the Escort Cosworth 4×4. The OMP frame (15710) at £109.25 covers that plus the larger 405mm x 290mm pattern for Recaro compatibility.
Are the OMP roll cages bolt-in or weld-in?
Check with us before ordering. Two of the three OMP listings carry a title that does not match their own product description on this point. The part number series (AB/105 for steel, AB/106 for chromoly) is the more reliable way to identify which cage you are looking at; we will confirm the exact construction before anything ships.
Is there a cage specific to the 4x4?
Yes, the Sparco weld-in cage is confirmed specifically for the 4×4 model.
Can I run a 6-point harness without a roll cage?
No. A 6-point harness needs anchor points above and behind the seat for the shoulder straps. Fit a roll cage or a properly engineered harness bar first. A 3-point bolt-in harness uses the standard seat belt anchor points and does not need a cage.
