Customer Question: How Do I Fit the Seat Belt Clip That Comes With My Sparco Seat Frame?

Seat fitting guide

Open the box on most Sparco vehicle sub-frames and you will find an extra flat steel bracket with two bolt holes and a flared end. It does not line up with anything on the frame, and it is one of the questions we are asked most: what is it for, and where does it go?

It is Sparco's seat belt mount. It carries your car's original seat belt buckle, so you can keep the factory belt with an aftermarket seat. Here is how it works, where it sits in the fitting stack, and one thread problem we found on the Mini R56 frame.

  • The extra bracket is Sparco's mount for the factory seat belt buckle
  • It bolts between the sliding runner and the seat, or the runner and the side mounts
  • It lines up with runners on the 345mm bolt pattern
  • Use it with a sliding runner, so the buckle moves with the seat
  • On our Mini R56 example the bracket nut was 7/16-20 UNF, the car's bolt metric

What the Sparco seat belt mount is

Sparco include a separate steel bracket with most of their vehicle-specific sub-frames. It holds your original factory seat belt buckle and ties it to the new seat, so the buckle stays in the right place at your hip wherever the seat is set.

The bracket has a flared design that:

  • clears the sub-frame and the seat above it
  • lines up with the bolt holes on sliding runners with the 345mm wide spacing
  • keeps the buckle in the same position relative to the seat as it slides

Without it, the buckle would stay fixed to the floor while the seat moves. Slide the seat forward or back and the buckle ends up too far away, too close, or awkward to use.

Why it does not line up with the sub-frame

It is not meant to. The bracket bolts between the seat and the sliding runner, or between the side mounts and the sliding runner, depending on your setup. That way it moves with the seat, not with the floor.

This matters for how the belt works. If the buckle stays put while the seat slides, the belt can end up too tight across you with the seat forward, or too loose with it back. With the bracket on the runner, the belt sits in the same place across your lap every time.

Our advice is to use a sliding runner whenever you use the seat belt mount. A fixed setup with no runner is better treated as a motorsport or track build with a harness, not the factory belt.

Where it goes in the stack

2. Sliding runners2. Sliding runners
3. Seat belt mount3. Seat belt mount
4. Base-mounted seat4. Side mounts
5. Side-mounted seat

Keeping to this order keeps everything aligned. Our guide to base mount or side mount explains the whole fitting stack in more detail.

Will it work with side mounts?

Yes. The bracket is flared wide enough to clear large side mounts, such as Sparco’s steel side mounts or the Endurance Motorsport multi-point brackets, whether they sit on a narrow or a wide pattern.

One thing to note: the bracket is a few millimetres thick, so it raises one side of the stack slightly. Sparco do not supply a spacer to even this up. Washers or a seat spacer on the other side will bring both sides level.

Which sliding runners work with it

The bolt holes in the bracket suit universal sliding runners on the 345mm width pattern, the pattern used by most runners and by the Sparco sub-frames themselves. Sparco’s own runner kit is the neatest match on a Sparco frame, but OMP and Endurance Motorsport runners on the 345mm pattern work too.

For more on runner types and patterns, see our complete guide to universal seat sliding runners.

A thread mismatch on the Mini R56 frame

The Sparco frame we photographed is the direct fit frame for the Mini R56. The seat belt bracket has a welded nut for the buckle bolt, and on this frame that nut is an imperial 7/16-20 UNF thread, a common size for harness and belt hardware.

The bolt that holds the Mini's factory buckle is metric. The two are close in size but not the same, so the factory bolt will not screw into the Sparco nut: it will either not start or will spin without biting. Nothing is faulty, the threads are simply different standards.

The welded nut on the Sparco seat belt bracket, which takes the bolt for the factory buckle.

The fix is to use a bolt that matches the nut: a high-tensile 7/16-20 UNF bolt, grade 8 or 10.9 or better, long enough to allow for the bracket’s thickness, with a washer and thread lock. These are common motorsport belt bolts. Do not force the factory bolt into the nut. We do not recommend re-cutting the thread or altering the welded nut, because the matching bolt solves it without touching the frame. A seat belt anchorage is safety-critical, so if you are not sure, have it fitted by someone qualified, and ask us if you need the right bolt.

We have seen this on the R56 frame. Other Sparco frames may use the same nut, so check the thread against your car’s buckle bolt before you start.

Why keep the factory belt

For many of our customers the car is used on the road as much as on track, so keeping the original three-point belt is a big deal. Even with a harness fitted, plenty of drivers use the factory belt for everyday journeys, and the bracket makes it easy to swap between the two. If your car is going for a roadworthiness test after the seats are changed, ask your testing station what they need to see.

Step-by-step summary

  1. Bolt the Sparco sub-frame to the car’s floor mounting points.
  2. Mount the sliding runners on the sub-frame, on the 345mm pattern.
  3. Fit the seat belt mount between the runner and the seat (base mount) or the runner and the side mounts (side mount).
  4. Level the other side with washers or a spacer if needed.
  5. Mount the seat, or the side mounts and seat, on top.
  6. Fit the factory buckle to the bracket with the correct bolt for its thread.
  7. Torque everything to the correct figures, then slide the seat through its full travel and check the buckle moves with it and stays easy to reach.

If you are not sure which parts suit your car and seat, Garreth and the team can put the full list together for you.

It is Sparco’s seat belt mount. It holds your car’s factory seat belt buckle so you can keep the original belt with the new seat.

Between the sliding runner and the seat on a base-mounted seat, or between the runner and the side mounts on a side-mounted seat.

We recommend one, so the buckle moves with the seat. A fixed setup is better suited to a harness.

On the Mini R56 frame the bracket nut is 7/16-20 UNF and the car’s bolt is metric. Use a high-tensile 7/16-20 UNF bolt of the right length.

Yes. It is flared wide enough for large side mounts, though it raises one side a few millimetres, so level the other side with washers or a spacer.

The short answerIt goes on the runner
