Safety Harnesses For Fairground Rides: What The TRS Magnum 6 Point Offers
Harness news, March 2024
Most of the harnesses we sell go into race cars, rally cars and track day cars. This time we are looking somewhere else: fairground rides, and what a motorsport harness has to offer there.
The harness in question is the TRS Magnum 6 point. Here is what it is, why it is built the way it is, and the part of the decision that has to stay with the ride's designer and inspector.
- The TRS Magnum 6 point is approved to FIA 8853-2016
- 3 inch (75mm) webbing on the shoulders, lap and sub straps
- Aircraft style rotary buckle that releases with a quarter turn
- Made by TRS in Doncaster, in ten colours
- FIA approval covers motorsport use, not fairground rides

What is on this page
The TRS Magnum 6 point
The TRS Magnum 6 point is TRS's core FIA harness, made in Doncaster and approved to FIA 8853-2016. Every strap, shoulders, lap and sub, is 3 inch (75mm) webbing, which spreads the load over a wider area than a 2 inch harness.
It has two shoulder straps, two lap straps and a sub strap between the legs, which stops the wearer sliding under the lap belt in a hard stop. The buckle is an aircraft style rotary type that releases with a quarter turn.

The Magnum comes in ten colours, and fits either with snap hooks onto eyebolts or with the shoulder straps wrapped around a bar. It is HANS friendly, and the wider TRS range covers other sizes, adjusters and end fittings.
Harnesses and fairground rides
The things that make the Magnum suit a race car, a secure hold, wide straps and a quick release, are the same things people ask about for rides that spin, drop or launch the rider. What we cannot do is tell anyone that a particular harness is right for a particular ride.
The FIA approval on the label covers motorsport use. In the UK, a fairground ride’s restraints are part of its design, and rides are checked under the HSE’s HSG175 guidance, with pre-use and annual inspections through the ADIPS scheme. Garreth’s advice to anyone asking is to take the harness specification to the ride’s designer and inspection body first, and let them decide whether it meets the ride’s requirements.
Our TRS harness range
Alongside the Magnum, the TRS range includes the lighter Magnum Superlite and Ultralite and the TRS Pro, all 6 point FIA harnesses. You can see them all in our TRS harness range, and we are happy to send the specification of any of them.
