What a fitting frame does
It is the vehicle specific base that bolts to the car’s own floor mounting points in place of the standard seat runners. The seat then mounts to the frame, either directly or on side mounts.
Getting the frame right is what decides your final seat height and how far back you can sit, which makes it a more consequential choice than most people expect when they are focused on the seat itself.
The sliding runner is included
That is a real difference rather than a detail. Cobra build the runner into their direct fit frames as standard, where Sparco, OMP, Planted and most other frame makers either charge for it as an extra or do not offer one for a specific vehicle fit at all.
It means the seat keeps its fore and aft adjustment. On a car that more than one person drives, or one still used on the road, that is the difference between a bucket seat you can live with and one you cannot.
Both sides in one order
Two frames, so driver and passenger. Buying them together is worth doing because it puts both seats at the same height, which is harder to match when the second one goes in months after the first.
The E36 ran from 1990 to 2000. These are cut for its floor bolt pattern, so check the generation before ordering rather than assuming it carries across to the E46.
What else you may need
If your seats are side mounted rather than base mounted, you also need a pair of side mounts per seat, and there are E46 and E36 steel side mounts listed separately.
