Brand guide / Direct fit frames

M2 Motorsport seat frames

An M2 subframe is £138.50, fits one specific car, and comes with the sliding rails in the box. The equivalent PCI frame is £275. That gap looks too big until you read M2’s own listings, which state a 14 stone driver weight limit and advise against heavy track use. Once you know that, the choice between them is easy and it is not really about money.

The short version

M2 frames include the sliders and cost half what the premium alternatives do, and the reason is printed on every listing: a 14 stone driver maximum and not recommended for heavy track use. Road or fast road car, driver inside that, and this is a very good buy. Outside it, buy a PCI.

01 / The brand

One product, done for 25 cars

M2 Motorsport are a UK fitting brand and the range is refreshingly short. Car specific subframes, a set of adaption bars, and five composite bucket seats. That is the lot.

What makes the subframes worth knowing about is what is in the box. These are entire replacement frames rather than a pair of brackets, and they include the sliding rails, so a side mount bucket goes in and still moves forward and back. Nothing else to buy, £138.50, one seat.

The honest bit is that M2 publish a limit on them. Every listing carries a driver maximum weight of 14 stone, and the adaption bars carry a note about not being recommended for heavy track use. We would far rather point that out on a guide page than have somebody find it out later, and it makes the brand easy to place: this is the road and fast road answer, and PCI is the answer above it.

Direct fit, not universal

Every frame is made for one chassis and bolts to the factory seat mount locations. Around 25 covered.

06The 14 stone limit

Published on every subframe listing, roughly 89kg. Along with the note about heavy track use, it is the thing that decides whether M2 or PCI is right for your build.

03 / How to choose

Four questions, and the first one is the honest one

This is a short brand and a short decision, provided you start in the right place.

1

Are you inside the 14 stone limit, and is this a road car?

M2 publish a driver maximum weight of 14 stone, about 89kg, on every subframe, and the adaption bars carry a note that they are not recommended for heavy track use. If you are inside that and the car is a road or fast road build that sees the occasional track day, an M2 at £138.50 with the sliders included is a very good buy and does everything you need. If the driver is over that weight, or the car genuinely lives on circuit, that is what the PCI range at £275 is for. It is a specification difference rather than a quality argument.

2

Side mount seat or base mount seat?

An M2 frame takes a side mount seat as it comes. For a base mount seat you add the adaption bars at £39.50, which run across the top of the frame and carry bolt points for the common patterns: Corbeau at 345mm, Cobra at 291mm, Sparco and OMP at 345mm, and anything else on the Sparco and OMP pattern. So £178 all in gets a base mount seat into a car specific frame, which is usually cheaper than any other route.

3

Which side of the car, and how many?

One frame does one seat, and the listings carry a driver side and passenger side option because the floor is not symmetrical on either. All of these are right hand drive fitments. If you are replacing both seats, look at the pairs first, at £258 to £268 for two, which saves around £19 over two singles.

4

Confirm the seat before you order

M2 describe their frames as fitting 90 per cent of side mount motorsport seats, and in practice they are used with Corbeau, Cobra, Sparco and Recaro standard width shells. The same listings also say fitment is only guaranteed with seats of the same brand, which is the sort of line a manufacturer puts in to protect themselves. Ring us with the seat and the car and we will tell you whether it is one of the straightforward ones.

I would rather someone read the 14 stone line here than find it on the listing after they have ordered. It is not a criticism of the frames. For a Civic or a Golf with a bucket seat in it, driven on the road and taken to Cadwell twice a year, an M2 at a hundred and thirty eight quid with the rails included is the best value fitting kit we sell and I fit them to my own stuff. It is just that it has a limit, M2 are open about it, and there is a PCI at double the money for people who are outside it.

The fourth and fifth rows are the whole comparison. Everything above them says these products do the same job, and they largely do. The published weight limit and the note on track use are what separate a £138.50 frame from a £275 one, and both are in the manufacturers’ own words rather than ours. Buy on that, not on the price.

13 / Questions

Common questions about M2 frames

What is an M2 direct fit subframe?

A complete replacement seat frame made for one specific car. It bolts to the factory seat mount locations and it includes the sliding rails, so the seat still moves forward and back. £138.50 fits one seat, and we cover around 25 chassis across Honda, Volkswagen, Nissan, Subaru, Toyota, Mitsubishi and Seat.

Why is it half the price of a PCI frame?

Because it is built to a different brief and M2 say so themselves. Every M2 listing states a driver maximum weight limit of 14 stone, about 89kg, and the adaption bars carry a note that they are not recommended for heavy track use. A PCI sliding sub frame at £275 has no such limit. So the £136 difference is not a con, it is a specification. For a road or fast road car with a driver inside that limit, M2 is a genuinely good buy. Above it, or for a car that lives on track, spend the extra.

Does it come with sliders?

Yes, and that is worth saying because most fitting kits do not. M2 subframes are entire replacement frames and include the sliding rails for forward and backward movement. There is nothing else to add for a side mount seat.

Will it take a base mount seat?

Not on its own, but the M2 base mount adaption bars at £39.50 solve it. They run horizontally across the top of the frame and carry bolt points for base mount seats, and they are listed for Corbeau 345mm, Cobra 291mm, Sparco 345mm and OMP 345mm patterns, plus anything else on the Sparco and OMP pattern. So £178 all in turns a car specific frame into a base mount fitting.

Which seats fit an M2 frame?

M2 say their frames suit 90 per cent of side mount motorsport seats, and in practice they are used with Corbeau, Cobra, Sparco, Recaro and similar standard width shells. The same listings also carry a line saying fitment is only guaranteed with seats of the same brand, which is the manufacturer covering themselves. Tell us the seat and the car and we will confirm before you order rather than after.

Do I need one frame or two?

One frame fits one seat, and driver and passenger are separate options on the listing because the floor is not symmetrical. If you are doing both seats, several of the popular chassis are sold as pairs at £258 to £268, which saves around £19.

Does M2 make seats as well?

Five of them. The GTS at £340 is a composite shell in Alcantara with a 3D spacer fabric centre and weighs 6.1kg. The GTR at £338 is full Alcantara and 6.9kg. Both are 32 to 36 inch waist, standard side mount bolt pattern and take up to a 6 point harness with a head restraint. There is a GTR XL at £420 with a 60cm overall wing width.

Which cars are covered?

Around 25 chassis. Honda Civic EG, EK, EJ, EP2, EP3, FN2 and CRZ, Integra DC2 and DC5, S2000 AP1 and AP2. Volkswagen Golf Mk5 through Mk8 and Scirocco Mk3. Nissan 350Z, 370Z and GTR. Subaru Impreza GC8 and GRB and Forester. Toyota Supra JZA80, Soarer and GT86. Mitsubishi Evo 7, 8, 9 and X. Seat Leon Mk3.
