Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Vauxhall Astra Mk3 GSI, including our fitting guide

The Mk3 GSI was built from 1991, and the last ones are now in their mid-thirties. The factory bolsters on most of them have gone: compressed from regular use, cracked where the trim has hardened, or worn through at the edges. Fitting a proper sport seat on the original mounting points makes a bigger difference to how the car feels than most other changes at the same price, and it does not require any modification to the floor.

There is one frame available for the Mk3 GSI from us: Cobra’s direct fit subframe. It includes a sliding runner, bolts to the factory mounting points, and takes both Cobra recliners (291mm x 330mm base mount) and Corbeau recliners, which are drilled for both the 291mm and 345mm patterns. That gives five seats in this guide.

  • One Cobra direct fit subframe for the Mk3 GSI: runner included in the price
  • 291mm x 330mm base mount pattern on the Cobra route
  • Corbeau recliners are dual-drilled, so the full Corbeau range fits the same frame
  • All five seats in this guide are listed as 4 point harness compatible
  • No floor drilling needed: bolts to the factory seat mounting points

The Cobra direct fit frame

The Mk3 GSI has one frame available from us: Cobra’s direct fit subframe. A direct fit frame replaces the complete original seat arrangement and includes a sliding runner in the price. That means the hardware for one seat conversion is one frame and one seat, nothing else. The frame bolts to the factory floor mounting points without drilling, which matters on a car you want to keep standard underneath.

Runner included. Bolts to the factory Mk3 GSI mounting points. Takes Cobra base mount recliners (291mm x 330mm) and Corbeau recliners (drilled for both 291mm and 345mm).

The number that decides it

The Cobra subframe carries a 291mm x 330mm bolt pattern. Cobra recliners use that pattern. Corbeau drill their recliners for both 291mm and 345mm, so every Corbeau in this guide fits the same frame without an adaptor. Seats built only for the 345mm Sparco pattern do not fit the Cobra frame.

Corbeau PSR: the value pair

The PSR comes as two seats in the box. On a car where the job is sorting both sides cleanly, that often settles the question without having to spec everything separately. The build is honest for the price, with an open base mount that makes entry and exit straightforward in the Mk3’s cabin. Both seats in the box are drilled for 291mm and 345mm, so they go onto the Cobra frame directly.

  • £558.00 inc VAT for a pair of two seats
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights suitable
  • Open base mount, easy entry and exit
  • Drilled for both 291mm and 345mm patterns
  • Listed 4 point harness compatible

Cobra Daytona: the support pick

The Daytona is where most Mk3 GSI track day conversations end up once the budget allows it. The bolsters are deeper than the PSR’s: they hold hips and shoulders through a corner so your arms do the steering instead of holding you in place. Cobra build each one to order through the Signature range, so you specify fabric, vinyl or leather with your stitching colour, plus heating or lumbar if the car needs them. The Tartan variant is the same seat in a period-correct tartan cloth, which suits the car’s era well at club events and shows. Both take the same 291mm pattern and bolt straight onto the Cobra frame.

  • From £598.99 inc VAT, built to order in your chosen trim
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights suitable
  • Signature trim: fabric, vinyl or leather with stitching choices
  • Heating and lumbar available as options
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra direct fit frame

Cobra Le Mans: the mid-range option

The Le Mans sits between the Daytona and the Misano in the Cobra range. It shares the same Signature build route as the Daytona, with the same trim and colour options, but a slightly different shoulder profile that some drivers find better suited to longer road stints. Three standard finishes are available: the standard version at £618.99, the Heritage in a period cloth at £648.99, and the Carbon in a carbon-look finish at £713.99. All three use the same 291mm pattern and fit the Cobra frame directly.

  • From £618.99 inc VAT (standard), Heritage £648.99, Carbon £713.99
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights suitable
  • Three standard finishes plus full Signature build options
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra direct fit frame
  • Listed 4 point harness compatible

Corbeau RRS Low Base: the headroom pick

The standard RRS has a tall backrest, and in the Mk3’s roofline that eats headroom before you have finished fitting it. The Low Base brings the whole seat height down without changing the backrest profile or the support it gives on track, so you keep the lateral hold of the RRS without losing the clearance you need on the road. Drilled for both patterns, fits the Cobra frame directly. If headroom is the first question, this is where to start.

  • £498.00 inc VAT (single seat)
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights suitable
  • Low Base: reduced seat height for tighter rooflines
  • Drilled for both 291mm and 345mm patterns
  • Listed 4 point harness compatible

Cobra Misano Anniversary: the premium pick

The Misano Anniversary is the top of the Cobra recliner range. Premium materials, the complete Signature options, and a backrest profile that holds you correctly on a long track session without becoming uncomfortable on the road. The Spec 2 is the same seat in a different standard trim at the same price. At £1,648.99 it is a significant spend on a Mk3 GSI, but if the car is properly set up and used regularly, it is the seat that makes the whole thing feel finished. Same 291mm pattern, same Cobra frame.

  • £1,648.99 inc VAT (Anniversary and Spec 2)
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights suitable
  • Full Signature trim options through Cobra
  • Top of the Cobra recliner range
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra direct fit frame

Fitting the frame

The Cobra direct fit subframe for the Mk3 GSI comes with a sliding runner included in the price. There is nothing extra to order for the mounting hardware. One complete seat conversion is one frame and one seat. The frame bolts to the factory floor mounting points, so the floor stays standard.

The one thing to check before the car moves is seat belt buckle clearance. A sport seat often puts the buckle somewhere different to where it was on the factory setup, and it is worth confirming the belt clicks home cleanly before you drive. Common questions

Does the Cobra direct fit frame include a runner?

Yes. The direct fit subframe for the Mk3 GSI comes with a Cobra sliding runner in the package. There is nothing extra to add for mounting hardware. If you were looking at the adaption frame, that one does not include a runner; the direct fit version for this car does.

Do I need to drill the floor of my Mk3 GSI?

No. The direct fit subframe bolts to the factory seat mounting points. Check seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, since a sport seat often puts the buckle somewhere different to where it was on the standard setup.

Will these seats take a 4 point harness?

Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with harness slots in the backrest. Let us know if you are fitting harnesses when you order and we will confirm the full combination works together.

Can I fit a Sparco recliner on the Cobra frame?

No. Sparco recliners use only the 345mm bolt pattern. The Cobra frame takes the 291mm x 330mm pattern (Cobra seats) and dual-drilled seats like the Corbeau range. A Sparco recliner is not compatible with this frame.

Are there reclining seat guides for other Vauxhall Astra generations?

The Mk3 GSI is the F-series Astra from 1991 to 1998. We have separate guides for the earlier Kadett-based Astra Mk3, which uses a different adaption frame route. Each generation has its own frame and seat compatibility.

What I would actually buy

For a Mk3 GSI that does regular track evenings, the Cobra Daytona is the one to start with. Deep bolsters, built properly, the seat that makes the car feel sorted rather than just fitted. The Tartan variant suits the car’s era well for club events alongside track days. For both seats without the per-seat price, a pair of Corbeau PSRs does the job cleanly on both sides at a fair price. The RRS Low Base if headroom is the first question. The Le Mans is a solid mid-range option if the Daytona is above budget but you still want Cobra’s build quality. The Misano Anniversary if the car is properly set up and used often: at that price it has to earn its place, and on a car in regular use it does.

Call us on 0115 9893488 before the order if you want to talk through the frame and seat combination. Cameron handles these setups most days and can go through the specifics before anything goes in the basket.
