What this cage design gives you

This one is built as a Rear cage with removable backstays and ‘V’ bracing. Here is what each part of that does.

  • Backstays. Rear legs running from the main hoop back to the strut tops or floor, tying the hoop into the back of the shell.

More tube means more protection and more stiffness, and also more weight and a harder car to live with. Pick the design around the regulations you run under and how often you actually get in and out of the car.

Bolt-in or weld-in?

Bolt-in cages mount on spreader plates through the floor and sills. No welding, no permanent change to the shell, and they can come out again. That makes them the sensible choice for a road car, a track day car, or anything you might sell on standard.

Weld-in cages are welded straight to the shell. You get a stiffer car and a better load path into the structure, which is why the sharper end of stage rally and circuit racing runs them. The trade is that it is permanent, it wants a proper fabricator, and the interior usually has to come out to do it.

For most people the deciding factor is the regulations. Check what your class requires first, then pick on practicality. If you are between the two, tell us what you compete in and we will point you at the right one.

Fitting the Lotus Europa Twin Cam 4 Point Bolt-In Rear Roll Cage

A bolt-in cage mounts on spreader plates through the floor and sills. It can be fitted without welding, and it can come back out, which matters if the car is a road car or a lease-return shell.

Dry fit the whole cage before anything is permanent. Check door and window clearance, seat position, and that you can still get in and out in a helmet with a harness on.

Any tube near your head needs padding. Fit FIA-rated roll bar padding to anything a helmet could reach, and think carefully about a multipoint cage in a car that still does road miles without helmets.

A rear cage is the lightest option, a full multipoint cage the heaviest, and material choice moves it again. T45 saves weight over CDS for the same strength, which is why it costs more. Weight gain is usually worth it for what the cage does to shell stiffness.

Can I still use the back seats?

Depends on the design. Cages running backstays and door bars through the rear usually mean the back seats come out. Check the design listed above against how you use the car.

Roll cages are not sized to you. Every one we sell is made for a specific car, so the first filter is your make, model and year. After that you are choosing four things: bolt-in or weld-in, how many mounting points, which material, and which approval you need.

Start with the regulations, not the cageWhich cage you can use is decided by your championship or club, not by preference. A cage that is wrong for your class is an expensive thing to find out about at scrutineering. Check the regulations first, then filter.

Bolt-in is the practical choice for a car that is still road registered, or one you might want to return to standard. Weld-in is stiffer, because the cage becomes part of the shell rather than something bolted to it, and it is what most competition classes require. It also means cutting trim and carpet and it is not coming out again.

A rear cage protects the driver from behind and gives you somewhere to mount harnesses. A full multipoint cage adds the front hoop and the roof. If you are fitting harnesses and nothing else, a rear cage with a harness bar may be all you need, and it is far less intrusive to live with.

For most road and track day cars, CDS is the right answer and the price difference is better spent elsewhere. T45 and chromoly earn their money in competition where the weight saving is worth paying for, and where the class allows them. Check your regulations, because not every class accepts every material.

Door bars are the trade-off worth thinking about. They are a real gain in side impact protection and they make climbing in and out considerably harder, which matters more than people expect in a car you use often. If the car is road driven, try getting in over a door bar before you commit.

Fitting and finish

Our cages are manufactured in the United Kingdom and supplied in bare metal, with powder coating available as an option. Bare metal is the standard because most people want to paint or coat it to match the car, and because a coated cage still has to be prepared where it welds.

Get a weld-in cage fitted properlyA weld-in cage is a structural part of the car. It wants fitting by someone who does it regularly, and where the approval says installation approval is required, it has to be signed off as well. Bolt-in cages are within reach of a competent home fit, but read the instructions before you start rather than after.

Before you order

Check the exact model and year against the product. Our cages are listed to specific variants, and a Focus Mk3 cage is not a Mk2 cage. Some are listed as rear cage only, which is easy to miss when the title otherwise matches. If your car has a sunroof, a different roof pressing or a factory option that changes the shell, tell us before you order.
