The Suzuki SJ 413, produced from 1985 to 1995 and sold in the UK as the Samurai from 1986, runs on a body-on-frame construction with a separate steel ladder chassis rather than a monocoque. The 1.3-litre G13 engine and the part-time four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer box define the mechanicals. The SJ developed a following in off-road competition including green-laning trials, short-course off-road racing, and adventure events, because its light weight and simple construction make it easy to repair in the field. Weighing under 900 kilograms, the SJ is noticeably lighter than most dedicated off-road competition vehicles and handles the transition from track surface to rough ground better than heavier alternatives.
