Customer Question: A Quick Release Harness For A Polo 6C With No Roll Cage

Customer question, answered properly

This one came in by email: VXR Recaro buckets going into a 2014 Polo 6C, harnesses wanted, no cage in the car and none planned, and the back seats have to keep working for passengers. That is four questions wearing one coat, and every one of them turns up at the counter on its own most weeks.

The short version: yes, this exists. It is called a clip-in harness, it is built for exactly this job, and the dearer car-specific version of the same idea is the Schroth QuickFit. Snap hooks onto eye bolts in the car’s existing anchorage threads, off again in seconds when the bench is in service, and the standard belts never leave the car.

  • Clip-in harnesses snap onto eye bolts in the car’s existing anchorage threads, no cage involved
  • Unclipping is a few seconds per hook, no tools, and the standard belts stay fitted the whole time
  • The TRS Clubman is £120.00 with the eye bolts included in the box
  • Schroth build car-specific QuickFit harnesses around standard mounting points, 33 applications listed
  • The seat needs harness openings in the backrest, so the Recaros get checked before any webbing is ordered

The car in question, more or less: a 6C with a bucket up front, the bench still in the back, and no cage anywhere.

I’m fitting VXR Recaro buckets in my 2014 VW Polo 6C. I want harnesses but I do not have a roll cage or roll bar. Do you make any that fit to standard seat belt mounting points while keeping the rear seats functional, so I can unclip quickly and use the standard belts if I need to carry passengers?

The question, as it arrived

The straight answer

Yes. The product being described is a clip-in harness, and the two we would put in front of you first are the TRS Clubman and the OMP Road 4M, both £120.00. The Clubman carries E homologation ECE 16.08 and comes with the 7/16in eye bolts in the box. OMP build their Road range for modified road cars by design, clipping to eye bolts or captive mounts instead of wrapping a cage bar. No cage anywhere in the conversation.

The eye bolts thread into anchorage points the car already has. Fit them once and forget them; from then on the harness clips in when you want it and comes out when you do not. For a bucket seat the four point is the right layout, and these three are examples from the clip buckle road range, which runs to about seventy belts across the colours and layouts.

Universal belts, plus the fittings to suit the carWorth being clear about how this market works: apart from the Schroth QuickFit further down, every harness on this page is a universal product. None of them is made for one car. What tailors the install to your Polo is the fittings, the eye bolts, snap hooks and brackets that put the belt onto the car’s own anchorage points. The TRS belts include their eye bolts; anything extra is a few pounds from the hardware further down.

The unclip, timed honestly

A four point clip-in has four snap hooks. Each one is a squeeze and a lift, and the whole belt is out of the car inside a minute with the eye bolts staying put. No tools come out at any point. The rear bench is never touched by any of this: nothing about the install changes the back seats or their belts, so passengers climb in and belt up exactly as VW intended.

The quick release itself, not to scale. The eye bolt lives in the car full time; the snap hook on each strap end is the part that comes and goes. Four of these per belt is the whole removal job.

The standard belts stay in, full timeEvery route on this page leaves the original three point belts fitted and working, and they carry the everyday miles. The harness is the extra layer for the drives that earn it. That is how every clip-in customer we serve runs theirs.

The car-specific route: Schroth QuickFit

If you want this idea with a part number aimed at one car, Schroth build it and call it QuickFit. The whole range is designed around a car’s standard mounting points, quick to fit, quick to remove, with Schroth’s ASM geometry on the shoulder side, and we list 33 applications.

The honest catch for this car: the Polo QuickFit on our shelf is built for the earlier Type 9N, and a 6C is a different platform. Schroth are a supplier we order from directly, so tell Cameron the car and he will check the 6C application with them before any money moves. If it exists, this is probably the neatest answer to the whole question.

Where the straps land in the Polo

Lap straps pick up the anchorages beside the seat. Shoulder straps run through the seat and rearward to points behind it, and the run has to stay shallow: no more than 45 degrees below horizontal, 20 if you ever wear an FHR, never angled upwards. Distance behind the seat is what keeps the angle honest, so the rear of the cabin usually offers the best points. The harness never anchors to the seat or its frame.

One Polo-specific thought before a drill or a spanner comes out: with the bench staying in service, the shoulder anchors want points that leave the rear belts’ own mountings alone. Which points those are on a 6C is a two minute conversation with the car in front of us, and a guess bolted into a floor pan helps nobody. The angles, the bolt specs and the five mistakes we keep correcting are drawn out in the fitting guide, and the wider no-cage decision has its own honest guide.

Never anyanchor on the seat or its frame.

Where the ends go in a car with no cage, drawn side on and not to scale. Rearward is to the left. The solid shoulder run sits on the 45 degree limit, the dashed one on the 20 degree FHR limit, and distance behind the seat is what keeps either honest. Measuring it properly is covered in the fitting guide.

The VXR Recaro question

Check the Recaros for harness openings firstA harness needs proper openings in the backrest to run through. Feed straps over the top of a seat that has none and they slide, rub and sit at the wrong height. VXR Recaro seats vary by model and year, so photograph the backrests and send the pictures over before ordering any webbing.

If the openings are there, everything above applies as written. If they are not, the straps have nowhere proper to run and the answer changes, so send the photos and Cameron will talk through the options while the standard belts carry on doing the job. And if the layout question is still open, our four, five or six point guide settles that half of it.

If track days follow

Half the people who ask this question are on a circuit within the year, so it gets a paragraph. The clip-in road ranges carry E marking; competition webbing carries FIA homologation, and the TRS Magnum four point at £246.00 is the step across, eye bolts included. Garreth’s steer on the money is simple: buy the Clubman for a road car that might do a track day, and buy the Magnum the moment circuits become a habit, because at £126 more it is the belt you never buy twice.

Common questions

Yes. The bench and its belts are untouched by the install. The one planning point is choosing shoulder anchor points that leave the rear belts’ own mountings alone, which is exactly what Cameron checks when you ring with the car.

A few seconds per hook and there are four of them, so call it under a minute per seat without rushing. The eye bolts stay in the car and nothing needs refitting afterwards.

Garreth’s pick is the Clubman first: £120.00, E-marked, eye bolts in the box, and it does everything the question asked for. If Schroth turn out to cover the 6C, the QuickFit is the tidier install for the extra money and worth the wait for the answer.

Then the harness waits. Straps need proper openings to run through, and over-the-top routing is not an install we would send out of the door. Send photos of the backrests and we will look at the options with you.

Not for a road or track day car running the kit on this page. Competition is different: your championship rulebook decides the cage and harness questions together, and if that is where the Polo is heading, tell us the series and we will spec to its regulations.

The next stepSend the photos and the plan

Two photographs of the Recaro backrests and a line about how the car gets used is everything Cameron needs to spec this properly, including the QuickFit check with Schroth. Ring 0115 9893488 or send them over, and the question this page started with gets its one word answer: yes.
