Planted Technology Volvo Sub-Frames: Ready For The 2025 Racing Season

Seat frame news, October 2024

Ahead of the 2025 season we have updated our Planted Technology Volvo range. Three new brackets have joined it this month, for the first generation S40, the first V70 estate and the second generation V70R, alongside the brackets we already listed for the C30 and the 240.

Volvos are not the first cars people think of for bucket seats, but the turbo cars have a real following on track and in touring car history. Here is what the Planted brackets do, which Volvos they cover and what to think about before the factory seats come out.

  • New this month: Planted brackets for the Volvo S40 (1995 to 2004), V70 (1996 to 2000) and V70R (2000 to 2007)
  • Already listed: the C30 (2006 to 2013) and the 240 series (1974 to 1993)
  • Each bracket is made for one car and bolts to the factory seat mounting points
  • Made in the USA from 3/16 inch steel with a black powder coat
  • Brackets are handed, so order one per side
  • Volvo seats of this era carry side impact and whiplash protection; tell us the specification

What a Planted bracket does

A Planted Technology bracket sits between the car’s floor and an aftermarket seat. It is made for one car, so it lines up with the factory seat mounting points and bolts in with no drilling or cutting. The original seats can go back in later.

Planted are a US company and make their brackets in the USA, laser cut from 3/16 inch steel, welded and powder coated black. The top of each bracket is drilled for the sliders of the main seat makers, including Recaro, Sparco, OMP, Cobra and Bride, so a base mounted seat bolts on with runners in between, and a side mounted bucket goes on with a pair of side mounts. For Recaro seats, Planted is the route we use.

New for 2025: S40, V70 and V70R

Volvo S40, first generation, 1995 to 2004 (SB355). The first S40 and V40 were built in the Netherlands alongside the Mitsubishi Carisma and share a lot underneath. The T4 turbo is the one people build, and the S40 had a following in touring car racing.

Volvo V70 estate, 1996 to 2000 (SB231). The first V70 is a facelifted 850 underneath. The five cylinder turbo T5 and R cars are the ones that attract competition seats, and the cabin is wide and tall, so shell width is rarely a problem.

Volvo V70R, second generation, 2000 to 2007 (SB410). A four wheel drive estate with around 300bhp. It came with heavily bolstered factory seats that are part of what a good R is worth, so if yours has them, talk to us first; for some owners keeping them makes more sense.

The C30 and the 240

Volvo C30, 2006 to 2013 (SB234). The C30 sits on the same Ford platform as the second generation Focus, though each takes its own bracket. The T5 is the reason to build one. It is a three door with a short cabin and a big centre console, so tell us your height and build and we will check the seat suits the car.

Volvo 240, 1974 to 1993 (SB196). Volvo barely changed the 240 across two decades, so one bracket covers the lot. There is a serious grassroots racing scene around them, and also a restoration crowd keeping tidy ones original.

Before the factory seats come out

Volvo engineered a lot into their seat structures in this era, including side impact and whiplash protection built into the seat, with side airbag wiring and often powered adjustment on the later cars. A competition shell does not replace that, so on a car that stays on the road it is worth thinking about properly. Tell us the car’s specification and how it is used, and we will suggest a seat that suits.

On the older cars, get the carpet up and check the metal around the seat mounts before spending money. Garreth’s advice is to send us the registration with any order, as it is the quickest way to make sure the bracket matches the car. You can see every Volvo bracket on our Volvo Planted Technology page, and the full Planted range covers many other makes.
