Most calls about a narrow racing seat begin with the car rather than the driver. A Caterham, Elise or compact kit car can run out of room at the tunnel, sill or door card long before a normal bucket seat reaches its mounting points. We also speak to karters moving into cars who want the close support they are used to, even when the cockpit itself has enough room.

The five below are the sensible FIA-approved starting points, but a published waist band is not the same as the seat's outside width. If the cockpit is tight, send us the measurements or call before ordering and we will check the actual fit with you.

Why narrow seats exist
In the showroom, we normally arrive at a narrow seat for one of three reasons. The shell has to pass between a wide transmission tunnel and the sill, the driver’s shoulders and hips need firmer support, or the cockpit needs a little more elbow room once a harness and HANS device are in place. A seat can feel snug on the driver and still be too wide for the car, so those are two separate checks.
Do not rely on the trouser size printed on a label. Measure the driver at the hips while seated, then measure the car at the narrowest points around the seat base and shoulder area. Allow for the side mounts or base frame, bolt heads, runner lever and the door closing. We also ask where the steering wheel sits because a seat mounted a few millimetres off-centre can leave the driver’s arms twisted even when the shell technically fits.
What to send us for a fit checkMeasure the narrowest gap at the seat base, the tunnel-to-door clearance at shoulder height, the usable mounting width and the available height below the roof or cage. Tell us the driver's seated hip width, height and whether you are using runners, side mounts, a harness and a HANS device. A few clear cockpit photographs help Cameron or Garreth spot obstructions that a single width measurement misses.

The OMP TRS-X covers both the 28in-32in and 32in-36in waist bands in our current product data, so it is usually our first comparison seat. The OMP TRS-E Velour covers the same waist bands and is the lowest-priced seat here at £199.50. Sparco’s Sprint and the Cobra Monaco Pro are both listed for a 32in-36in waist; the Sprint is listed for all driver heights, while the Monaco Pro is listed for drivers under 6ft. The Mirco GT Velour is the fibreglass option in this group and is currently listed for a 32in-36in waist.
Those bands help us build a shortlist, but they do not replace an external measurement. On a Caterham, Elise or a tight kit-car tub, the seat can foul the tunnel, sill, door pull, cage tube or harness hardware. That is why we would rather check the car and driver together than tell you a model will fit from waist size alone.

What actually makes a seat narrow instead of standard?
A narrow seat is one whose external shape and driver space suit a restricted cockpit. The waist band is only driver-fit guidance; it does not state the shell width. Compare the seat’s base, shoulder and mounting dimensions with the car, then allow space for brackets, bolt heads, runners and the closing door.
Which of your narrow seats is cheapest?

I have a Caterham or Elise, will these fit without measuring?
No. Caterhams, Elises and kit cars vary by chassis, trim, cage and mounting method. Measure the narrowest points and call us on 0115 9893488. If possible, send cockpit photographs as well so we can check the tunnel, sill, door and cage clearance together.
Is there a fibreglass option in this range, or are they all steel?
The Mirco GT Velour is the fibreglass option in this shortlist. The OMP TRS-X, OMP TRS-E, Sparco Sprint and Cobra Monaco Pro use steel construction according to their current product listings.
