Mirco Classic FIA joins our showroom seat display
The Mirco Classic FIA has taken a place on our main seat display. It has become one of our best selling seats, and the comparison that keeps coming up is with the Recaro Pole Position ABE. Their internal shapes invite comparison, but approval, mounting parts and driver fit deserve a closer look.
This January 2025 display addition gives visitors another shell to sit in alongside the wider Mirco range.
- Fibreglass fixed back shell with side mounting points.
- FIA 8855-1999 homologation and a classic shape without head support wings.
- A listed 32 to 36 inch waist guide, with fit checked in person.

A classic shape with FIA homologation
The Mirco Classic FIA is a fibreglass competition seat with a fixed back and firm side support. It has no projecting head support wings, which gives it the older shape many owners want in a classic Ford, Mini or similar project.
Its FIA 8855-1999 homologation is a key part of the appeal. Look at the label on the individual seat and check its validity for your event. The brackets, belt routing and installation still need their own checks.
Openings accommodate four or six point harness layouts, and the shoulder area is intended to work with a frontal head restraint. Choose the harness and FHR together. Follow their manufacturers' instructions for compatibility, belt routing and installation.
The Classic mounts at the sides. Budget for compatible side mounts and the vehicle-specific fitting arrangement as well as the seat itself. Our bucket seat mounting guide explains how the seat, brackets and car's mounting points fit together.
Mirco Classic FIA or Recaro Pole Position ABE?
The approval is the first distinction to settle. The Classic is an FIA-homologated competition model. The Recaro Pole Position ABE has a German ABE component approval, with conditions covering the installation; it is a different product from Recaro's FIA competition version.
| What to compare | Mirco Classic FIA | Pole Position ABE |
|---|---|---|
| Approval | FIA 8855-1999; check the seat label and event rules | ABE component approval; not the FIA competition version |
| Construction | Fibreglass fixed back shell | Glass fibre reinforced plastic shell with integrated headrest |
| Driver guide | Listed for a 32 to 36 inch waist | Our listing suggests a 32 to 36 inch waist and drivers under six feet |
| Mounting | Compatible side mounts and a fitting solution for the car | RECARO-specified mounting parts for the relevant installation |
| Trim and support | Extensive made-to-order colours and materials | Recaro trim choices and lumbar support that can be padded to suit |
When an event requires an FIA-approved seat, the ABE model is not a substitute for the appropriate FIA version. Equally, an ABE label does not make a seat universally approved in every car. Recaro's product information explains the ABE model and its equipment.
The Classic offers a lower-cost route into this style of FIA seat in our range. Allow for the brackets, frames and any required belt parts in your budget. Comparing complete fitted costs makes the price difference more useful.
What to check when you sit in the Classic
The black display seats use Mirco's 3D spacer fabric or velour, with the Classic alongside the other shells so visitors can compare hip, thigh and shoulder support before choosing a trim.
A waist size is only a starting point. The Classic's 32 to 36 inch guide does not guarantee a fit for every height or build. Check your shoulder position against the harness openings, the space around your hips and the room the shell needs inside the car.
- Wear the driving shoes and clothing you intend to use, and sit back fully into the seat.
- Spend enough time in the shell to notice pressure at your thighs, hips or shoulders.
- Check the proposed seat height, steering wheel reach and helmet clearance in the car.
- Confirm the mounting parts and belt arrangement before placing the order.
Garreth's advice is to take a few minutes in the seat rather than judging it from a quick perch on the cushion. Cameron will also need the car model, intended use and existing fittings to help check the installation.
Made to order in your own colours
Beyond the black display seats, Mirco offers more than 250 trim and colour combinations across the following parts of the seat.
- Trim material: vinyl, suede or fabric.
- Trim colours: black, green, white, blue, grey, orange or red.
- Contrasting or matching stitching.
- Shell colours: black, blue, grey, orange, red, white or yellow.
- Name embroidery and mixed material or colour panels across the cushions.
Two bespoke orders that came through the showroom for a quality check around this January update show the possibilities. One was an RS2 with an orange rear shell and black trim. The other was an XL in grey suede throughout. Both were models from the wider Mirco range.
Choose the shell that fits first, then confirm the materials, colours and lead time available for that model.

Questions about the Classic FIA
Is the Mirco Classic FIA approved?
The model is homologated to FIA 8855-1999, subject to checking the individual seat’s label and validity, your event’s rules and the installation requirements.
Is the Pole Position ABE the same as the FIA version?
No. The ABE model has a component approval with installation conditions. Recaro’s FIA competition seat is a separate version.
Will the Classic fit any driver height?
The listed 32 to 36 inch waist range is a guide. Height, shoulder position, hip width and the car’s space all need checking; there is no universal height guarantee.
Can I order a different colour?
Mirco offers made-to-order trim, stitching, shell colour and embroidery options; confirm the combination and lead time for the model you choose.
What mounting parts does it need?
The Classic uses side mounts plus a compatible fitting arrangement for the car. Send us the car model and details of the existing fittings so we can help check the parts.
Plan a seat fitting
Send your height, waist measurement, car model and intended use if you cannot visit. If you can, bring your driving shoes and tell us which seats you want to compare so we can confirm the display before you travel.
