Toyota MR2 W10 Bucket Seat Guide

The Toyota MR2 W10, the AW11 (1984 to 1989)

This page covers the W10 only, the first generation MR2 built from 1984 to 1989 and better known as the AW11. Everything below is specific to that chassis, so nothing here has been stretched to cover three different cars at once. If you are not certain which MR2 you have, or you want to compare all three side by side, the general Toyota MR2 bucket seat guide does that job. The W10 is the smallest and lowest of the three, so the thing to settle first is headroom, and the AW11 fitting kit comparison below explains the mounting options. I am Cameron, and working out which combination suits a particular car is the part of this I handle.

The AW11, built 1984 to 1989. One Planted bracket and four BRIDE rails are listed for this chassis, and none of them carry over to the W20 or the W30.

Side mount or base mount

This is the decision that shapes everything else, because it decides which half of the seat catalogue is available to you. On a W10 the choice is also about height, because the roofline is low, particularly on the T-bar cars.

☰

Side mount

The seat bolts to brackets on each side of its shell. On an AW11 that means the BRIDE XL, a sliding rail, or the BRIDE FX, a fixed competition rail. Both list the seat sitting up to 30mm lower, depending on the vehicle, which is the whole game in a car this small.

◫

Base mount

The seat bolts down through its own base. The Planted SB177 is the frame for the W10, and the BRIDE MO and RO rails are base mount too. Reclining seats are almost all base mount, so this is the route if you want one.

The AW11 fitting kits

Five parts are listed for the W10 chassis. The part numbers are worth quoting if you ring or email, because Planted and BRIDE both list several MR2 generations and the names look alike.

BRIDE rails are special order, worth reading before you check outBRIDE products are ordered from Japan specifically for you. Once processing is complete they cannot be cancelled, returned or refunded, so check the side and the chassis code before you order, or send us the registration and we will confirm the part. Each BRIDE rail is for one seat, and the Planted SB177 is priced per side, so a pair means ordering twice. The BRIDE MO is listed for the driver side only.

Bucket seats for the AW11

For a side mount seat on the BRIDE XL, Garreth’s recommendation is a Sparco Evo or another fibreglass seat, and the Evo family is what we show here. The Evo QRT is the standard shell, the Evo L is the wide shell and the Evo XL is the biggest. All three are fibreglass and FIA 8855-1999 approved. A fibreglass shell is thinner to sit on than a steel framed recliner, so you keep the height the rail saves.

💬
Our picks, not the whole listTell us your height before you pick a shell

Shell width and height matter more than the bracket in a car this small, and there are shells that will not go into an AW11. Tell us your height, your waist and which side you need, and we will narrow it down properly. Compare the AW11 fitting kits below, then ask us which mounting setup suits your height.

Reclining seats for the AW11

If the car still does road miles, a reclining sport seat holds you far better than the original without committing you to a fixed back shell. These are base mount, so they go on the Planted SB177 on runners, or on the BRIDE MO rail where the pattern matches. We picked narrow seats with no head wings to catch the roof lining: the Corbeau SVR first, then the Sparco R500, with the R333, the Cobra Daytona and the carbon SPX behind them. The Daytona is the widest here, so ask us about width before you order it for an AW11. Runners are £78.00 a pair for the Sparco 345mm kit and £117.60 a pair for the Cobra 291mm kit.

Driver fit at a glance

Straight from the manufacturers’ own published figures for each seat. Where a figure is not published the cell says so rather than us guessing at it, and none of it tells you about headroom, which is the thing to check in an AW11.

Roll cages for the AW11

Safety Devices list bolt in cages for the W10, a rear only cage and a five point cage, and there is a rear five point version as well. If the car is going to be scrutineered, tell us which championship and which regulations before you order.

Harnesses

Four, five and six point belts. Which one you can run depends on what you have to mount the shoulder straps to, so it is worth settling the seat and any cage before you order belts.

Mounting points are the whole question with harnesses, and they are not the same on every build. Send us a photo of what is behind the seats and we will tell you what will work.

Common questions about W10 seats

Planted Technology make the SB177, which is the base mount frame for the W10 chassis, 1984 to 1989. BRIDE make four Super Seat Rails for the AW11: the XL and FX for side mount seats, and the MO and RO for base mount. All are right hand drive and listed for the AW11.

The BRIDE XL and FX both list the seat position as up to 30mm lower, depending on the vehicle. The XL slides and the FX is fixed. Our sit lower guide goes through the choice and the Sparco Evo seats that suit it.

It depends on the shell more than the bracket, because the roofline is low, particularly on the T-bar cars. Tell us your height and build and we will pick the seat.

Yes. The Planted SB177 is sold per side and each BRIDE rail is for one seat, so you add the product twice and choose each side. The BRIDE MO is listed for the driver side only, so ask us about the passenger side.

No. BRIDE products are special order from Japan, made for you. Once processing is complete they cannot be cancelled, returned or refunded, so check the side and the chassis code first.

No. The W20 takes the Planted SB057 and PCI kits, and the W30 Spyder takes the SB227 and PCI kits. PCI list kits for the W20 and W30 only, so the W10 is Planted and BRIDE.

More MR2 guides

If you are working across more than one MR2, or you are not sure which chassis you are looking at, these cover the rest of the range. The W30 guide covers the Roadster, and the AW11 fitting kit comparison on this page covers the mounting choices.
