Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Renault 19, including our fitting guide

Thirty-five years of use does things to a factory seat that become obvious the moment you sit in a fresh one. The Renault 19’s standard seats were decent enough for 1990, but they were built for a car that needed to appeal to the same person who might have bought a Mondeo. Anyone still driving one now has chosen it deliberately, which tends to mean a different set of priorities when it comes to the interior.

One Cobra subframe covers both body styles. The saloon and the 19 Cabriolet share their floor mounting arrangement, so the same frame bolts to either car without modification. Cameron’s conversation with a Cabriolet owner usually has an extra step before a seat recommendation: an open car flexes more than a closed one, and a seat that is mounted solidly passes that information to you rather than absorbing it. He tends to favour the firmer end of the recliner range on cabriolets for that reason.

  • One frame route for both body styles: Cobra direct-fit subframe (14471), runner included, £231.66 inc VAT per seat position
  • Saloon and Cabriolet share their floor mounting, so the same frame fits both
  • All five seats in this guide are base-mount, 4 point harness compatible, and fit the 291mm x 330mm Cobra pattern
  • Tell Cobra which seat is going on the frame at checkout; it is noted on the listing
  • Check headroom in the Cabriolet with the roof up before ordering; the Stuttgart and RRS Low Base are the starting point for owners with tighter clearance

The Renault 19. One Cobra subframe covers both the saloon and the Cabriolet; the frame and runner come in one purchase.

The frame route into a Renault 19

The Cobra direct-fit subframe is the one bracket we stock for the 19, and it covers both the saloon and the Cabriolet. Renault used the same floor mounting arrangement across both body styles, which is why a single listing does the job for either. The frame replaces the factory runners and bolts to the original seat mounting points without drilling. Runner is included in the price, which is how Cobra quote their frames. Most competitor listings show a lower bracket price that excludes the runner, so check the total cost rather than the bracket cost alone before comparing.

One note on ordering: Cobra ask you to tell them which seat is going onto the frame at checkout. Add that detail when you order. The frame is priced per seat position, so a pair of seats means two frames in the basket.

Cobra direct-fit subframe

Product 14471. £231.66 inc VAT per seat position, runner included. Fits the saloon and the 19 Cabriolet. Takes Cobra recliners at the 291mm x 330mm pattern, and Corbeau recliners drilled for both 291mm and 345mm. Every seat in this guide fits this frame.

Harness notes

All five seats in this guide are listed 4 point harness compatible. If you are fitting a harness alongside the seat, contact us before ordering and we will confirm the combination and mounting route for your specific car before anything is dispatched.

The number that decides it

Every seat below mounts through a base-mount bolt pattern. Cobra recliners use 291mm x 330mm. Corbeau recliners are drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, which is why they sit straight onto the Cobra subframe without adaption. There is one frame route for the Renault 19: the Cobra subframe. All five seats in this guide are confirmed compatible with it. The choice between them comes down to headroom, support and budget rather than which frame to run.

Cobra Stuttgart Vinyl291 x 330Fits
Cobra Misano Anniversary291 x 330Fits
Pick the seat firstThe frame route is the same whichever seat you choose, so the only decision is which seat suits your driving, your build and your headroom. If the car is the Cabriolet and the roof clearance is the question, start with the Stuttgart at 800mm or the RRS Low Base before looking at the taller options.

Cobra Daytona: the support pick

The Daytona is the seat Cameron puts most 19 saloon owners into when they want proper lateral support and the car does track evenings. The bolsters at the shoulders and hips are deeper than anything else in this guide, which keeps your position through a fast corner without you needing to brace against the door. It is also the entry point to Cobra’s Signature custom order range: any trim combination from plain black cloth through to two-tone leather, with optional heating and lumbar if the car covers winter miles.

At 865mm tall, it is towards the top of this guide. In the saloon that usually works. In the Cabriolet with the roof closed, take the measurement before committing: if there is less than about 900mm between the seat base and the headlining with the top up, the Stuttgart at 800mm or the Corbeau RRS Low Base are the better starting point.

  • £599 inc VAT, built to order in your trim choice
  • 32 to 38 inch waist; all heights suitable
  • 865mm tall, 580mm wide, 530mm base; 13.5kg
  • Cobra Signature trim options; optional heating and lumbar
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern; fits the Cobra subframe

Corbeau Sportline RRS Low Base: the headroom answer

The RRS Low Base is the seat built around the headroom question. A lower base means the seat sits closer to the floor compared to the standard RRS, which is what matters when the Cabriolet’s closed-roof measurement is the deciding factor. The integrated headrest is part of the seat profile rather than a separate post, so there is no additional height to add above what you see listed. Cameron’s starting point for 19 Cabriolet owners with tight clearance is this seat.

It is drilled for both the 291mm and 345mm patterns, so it fits the Cobra subframe without adaption. It is listed as a single seat. If you only need one side, it orders as such; if both sides need doing, order two.

  • £498 inc VAT each
  • 32 to 38 inch waist; all heights suitable
  • Lower base height than the standard RRS, the clearance-first choice
  • Integrated headrest; 4 point harness compatible
  • 291mm or 345mm pattern; fits the Cobra subframe

Corbeau PSR: the pair play

The PSR makes the clearest case for replacing both seats at the same time. The pair comes in at £558 inc VAT. A single Cobra Daytona is £599. When both sides of the car need doing and the budget matters more than the finish, that comparison is hard to argue against.

It is drilled for both the 291mm and 345mm patterns, so it sits on the Cobra subframe. The cloth trim suits the Renault 19 interior well. Harness slots are in the backrest and the seat is listed 4 point compatible. If you only need one side, ring us and we can arrange a single.

  • £558 inc VAT for the pair; both seats done in one order
  • 32 to 38 inch waist; all heights suitable
  • Cloth trim; drilled for both 291mm and 345mm patterns
  • Harness slots; 4 point harness compatible
  • Less than one Daytona for both sides of the car

Cobra Stuttgart Vinyl: the compact option

The Stuttgart is the most compact seat in the Cobra recliner range. At 800mm including the integrated headrest, it is the lowest seat in this guide by 65mm over the Daytona. That measurement includes the headrest, so there is no hidden height to account for above what you see. For a Cabriolet where the closed-roof clearance decides the question, the Stuttgart is often where the conversation ends.

The trim range is broader than any other Cobra recliner: vinyl, basketweave, corduroy, houndstooth and tartan are all available. The vinyl is the straightforward choice for a car used in all weather. It mounts on the 291mm x 330mm Cobra pattern.

  • £619 inc VAT; broad trim range including vinyl, cloth and houndstooth
  • 32 to 38 inch waist; all heights suitable
  • 800mm tall including integrated headrest; lowest Cobra recliner in this guide
  • Widest trim choice of the Cobra road-oriented range
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern; fits the Cobra subframe

Cobra Misano Anniversary: for a 19 that has been properly sorted

The Misano Anniversary is Cobra’s top recliner. The difference from the seats below it shows on a long drive rather than in a showroom: the adjustable lumbar holds your position through a full track day session, and at 11.5kg it is the lightest seat in this guide. It is made to order in any one or two colour leather combination with diamond-quilted centre panels. For a Renault 19 that has had proper attention, the Misano is the seat that finishes the interior rather than just improving it.

One headroom note: the Misano sits at 885mm, the tallest in this guide. In a Cabriolet take the measurement with the roof up before ordering. If the Daytona at 865mm works, the extra 20mm is usually fine. If it is already borderline, start with the Stuttgart or the RRS Low Base instead.

  • £1,649 inc VAT each, built individually to order
  • All waist sizes; all heights suitable
  • 885mm tall, 590mm wide; 11.5kg
  • Adjustable lumbar; optional heating; four to six weeks from order
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern; fits the Cobra subframe

Getting it bolted down

The Cobra subframe bolts to the Renault 19’s original floor mounting points without drilling. Torque the floor bolts properly once fitted, then check the seat belt route before driving. In some Renault 19 configurations the factory belt anchorage sits close to where the new seat base will be; confirm the buckle clears the new seat before the first drive out.

Runner is included in the Cobra frame price, so there is one purchase for the subframe and the sliding adjustment. Nothing else is needed between the floor and the seat base for any of the five seats in this guide.

Tell Cobra which seat is going on the frame when you order. Harness alongside the seat? Contact us first and we will confirm the mounting works for your specific car before anything goes out.

Common questions

Does the Cobra subframe fit both the saloon and the Cabriolet?

Yes. Renault used the same floor mounting arrangement on both body styles, which is why one listing covers both. If you are ordering for the Cabriolet, the seat height question is worth looking at before you choose: the Stuttgart at 800mm and the Corbeau RRS Low Base are the starting point for Cabriolet owners where clearance with the roof up is a concern.

Do I need to drill the floor of my Renault 19?

No. The Cobra subframe bolts to the original 19 floor mounting points without drilling. Torque the floor bolts properly once fitted, and check where the seat belt buckle ends up relative to the new seat before your first drive. In some Renault 19 configurations the factory belt anchorage is close to the seat base position.

Which seat is best for the Cabriolet where headroom is tight?

The Cobra Stuttgart Vinyl at 800mm and the Corbeau Sportline RRS Low Base are the two seats Cameron starts with for Cabriolet owners with tight clearance. The Stuttgart's measurement of 800mm includes the integrated headrest, so what you see is what you get. The RRS Low Base has a reduced base height compared to the standard RRS, which brings the seat closer to the floor and gives back room above your head. If neither clears, contact us with the measurement and we will work out whether any seat in the range fits.

Will these seats take a 4 point harness?

Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point harness compatible, with harness slots in the backrest. If you are fitting a harness at the same time, contact us before ordering and we will confirm the full combination works for your Renault 19 before anything is dispatched.

The Corbeau PSR is listed as a pair. Can I order just one?

Yes. Ring us on 0115 9893488 and we can arrange a single seat if you only need one side. The pair is the listed option because most people replacing the seats do both at the same time, but a single is available if that is what you need.

What I would actually buy

For most saloon owners: the Daytona. It gives you the support the factory seat was never going to provide, it goes on the one frame route without complication, and it can be ordered in any trim from Cobra’s Signature range. If the car is a Cabriolet and the clearance is tight with the roof up, the Stuttgart at 800mm or the RRS Low Base are the first conversations. The PSR pair is the version of this build that settles the budget question when both sides of the car need doing at once.

The Misano is for the 19 that has already been properly sorted and needs the interior to match. At 885mm it is the tallest seat in this guide, so take the roof-up clearance measurement before committing if yours is the Cabriolet. Once it fits, it is the seat nobody wants to get out of.

Ring 0115 9893488 and we will talk through which of the five suits the way your 19 is used.
