Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Audi A6 (97 Onwards), including our fitting guide

The A6 spends most of its life as a company car or a long-distance motorway cruiser, so by the time one turns up at GSM asking about seats it has usually covered a serious mileage. The factory chairs hold up reasonably well as executive saloon seats go, but the bolsters go soft, the base sags on the driver’s side after enough years of the same commute, and the driving position never quite matches what a well sorted chassis like this can do in a corner.

Most A6 owners we talk to are not chasing a stripped-out track look. They want a seat that grips properly on a spirited B-road or the odd track day, without turning the car into something you would not want to sit in for two hours on the motorway. That is exactly what a base-mount recliner on the right frame gives you.

  • One frame route in stock for the 97-onwards A6: the Cobra Seats direct fit subframe
  • Cobra recliners use a 291mm pattern, and Corbeau recliners are drilled for it too
  • Every seat in this guide is listed 4 point harness compatible
  • The frame bolts to the factory mounting points, no drilling on a standard floor

The A6. One frame route decides which of the five seats below can go in it.

The frame route into a 97-onwards A6

We stock one fitting frame for this generation of A6, from Cobra. A frame is the vehicle-specific base that bolts to the floor in place of the standard runners, and it sets your final seat height, so this choice comes first regardless of which seat you end up in.

291

Cobra subframe

Part number SU-AU-A6, £231.66 inc VAT a side. Sold individually, RHD driver and passenger listed separately, so a pair means adding two to the basket. Cobra's own listing covers A6 models from 1995 onward, which takes in the 97-onwards car this guide is written for. Pairs with 291mm runners and takes the Daytona, the Stuttgart, the Le Mans and both Corbeau picks below.

We also list a Planted bracket for the A6, and it is not this carWe checked. The Planted Technology bracket in our range titled for the A6 (part SB111-1) is the same fitment as the explicitly-labelled Planted Audi A6/S6 [C4 Chassis] (1994-1997) bracket we also stock, part SB111. Both are for the older, pre-97 A6 shape. Planted do sell a bracket for the later [C7 Chassis] (2011-2018) A6, which is a different product again and not stocked as part of this guide. If your car is a 97-onwards A6, the Cobra subframe above is the route we sell for it. If you are not sure which shape you have, send us the registration and we will confirm before you order.

The number that decides it

Every reclining seat we sell bolts down through a base mount pattern, and on this car one number matters: 291mm x 330mm, which is what the Cobra subframe is built around. Cobra recliners are drilled for it as standard. The Corbeau Sportline RRS is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, which is why it bolts to the Cobra subframe just as well as a genuine Cobra seat does, it just gives you a different shape and trim to choose from. There is no Sparco frame for this car, so a Sparco seat is not in this guide, and a 405mm seat like the Recaro Sportster CS has no route we sell here either.

Pick the seat, the frame is already decidedWith one route on this car, the choice comes down to which of the five suits you and your budget, not which frame to buy. My job at GSM is working out which of these five is right for a given driver, so if you are stuck between two, ask.

Cobra Daytona: the sensible starting point

The Daytona is where most A6 owners start, and on a car that still does daily miles it is usually the right call. It is a compact seat that leaves the driving position roughly where the factory seat had it, so you are not fighting the pedals or the wheel to get comfortable, and it leaves the most budget for the frame. Cobra list it for all waist sizes and for drivers both over and under six foot, which matches what we see across the counter: it is a hard seat to be the wrong shape for.

Cobra Stuttgart: built for the days it is still a company car

  • From £515.83 Excl. VAT Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page

The Stuttgart is Cobra’s reclining office seat, built with the daily driver in mind rather than the track first. It holds you well enough through a corner but stays genuinely comfortable on the motorway run into the office, which is exactly the balance most A6 owners are after. The vinyl trim wipes clean and wears well, and stepping up to the Signature spec buys a smarter finish for a car that still needs to look right in a car park at work.

  • From £619.00 inc VAT, £709.00 in Signature spec
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Vinyl trim as standard, Signature spec available
  • 4 point harness compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra subframe

Corbeau Sportline RRS Low Base: more bolster, same pattern

The RRS Low Base is the Corbeau option on this car, and it is worth a look if you want deeper shoulder and thigh support than either Cobra seat gives you without moving to a full bucket. It is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, so it bolts to the Cobra subframe as easily as a Cobra seat does, and the Low Base version buys back some of the headroom a taller driver loses in a saloon with a lower roofline than it looks like it has. The backrest is Corbeau’s usual sculpted shape, worth knowing if you have sat in the flatter Cobra profile before and want more hold.

  • £498.00 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Cloth, vinyl or leather trim
  • 4 point harness compatible
  • Drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, fits the Cobra subframe

Cobra Le Mans: the one for track days

  • From £515.83 Excl. VAT Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page

The Le Mans is what I point A6 owners at when the car does more than the odd track evening. The bolsters at the shoulders and thighs go noticeably deeper than the Daytona or Stuttgart, so your body stays put under load and your arms do the steering instead of fighting to hold you in place. It is built to order through Cobra’s Signature range, spacer fabric, vinyl or leather, contrast stitching, heating or lumbar if you want them. The Le Mans Heritage brings the same shape in a period-correct look off the shelf, worth a look if the rest of the car has that character too.

  • £619.00 inc VAT, Le Mans Heritage from £649.00
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights, 13.4kg
  • Signature trim options, plus optional heating and lumbar
  • 4 point harness compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra subframe

Corbeau Sportline RRS Leather Elite: the premium pick

The Leather Elite is the RRS with a proper trim upgrade, over 250 colour options and a leather finish that suits a car this size. It keeps the same dual-pattern base as the standard RRS Low Base, so it bolts to the Cobra subframe without any adaptation, and it is the seat I would put in an A6 that is staying on daily duty but deserves to feel like it. Heated seats are available as an option, worth having if the car is still doing winter commuting.

  • £1,284.00 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Leather trim, 250+ colour options, heated option available
  • 4 point harness compatible
  • Drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, fits the Cobra subframe
  • From £1,070.00 Excl. VAT Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page

Getting it bolted down

The Cobra subframe bolts to the A6’s factory seat mounting points, so there is no drilling on a standard floor. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new. Between seat and frame go the sliding runners, and Cobra and Corbeau each sell their own 291mm runner kit, not a shared one. One ordering quirk worth knowing: the frame is listed per side, RHD driver and RHD passenger, so a pair means adding two to the basket.

This guide covers the A6 from 1997 onward, the C5 shape and every generation after it. If your car is a pre-March-1997 A6, that is the older C4 shape and the Cobra subframe above still lists it in its own fitment range, but it is worth telling us the registration when you order so we can confirm the exact subframe variant for your car.

Common questions

Do I need to drill the floor of my A6?

Not on a standard floor. The Cobra subframe bolts to the factory seat mounting points. Torque the floor bolts properly and check the seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new.

Does the Planted bracket you sell for the A6 fit my car?

Not if your car is a 97-onwards A6. We checked the listing carefully: the Planted bracket in our range that shows the A6 by name is the same fitment as our explicitly-labelled Planted Audi A6/S6 [C4 Chassis] (1994-1997) bracket, the older, pre-97 shape. Planted also sell a bracket for the later [C7 Chassis] (2011-2018) A6, which is a separate product not covered by this guide. For the 97-onwards car, the Cobra subframe is the route we sell.

Will these seats take a 4 point harness?

Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with belt slots in the backrest. If you are planning harnesses, tell us when you order and we will make sure the whole setup works together.

Why is the frame priced per side?

The Cobra subframe is listed per seat position, with RHD driver and passenger side options. A pair of seats means two frames in the basket. If anything on a listing is unclear, ask before ordering.

How do I know which generation of A6 I have?

This guide covers the A6 from March 1997 onward, the C5 shape and everything after it. If your registration is earlier than that, you have the older C4 shape, and while the Cobra subframe still lists that range, the Planted bracket route in this guide does not apply to either generation, only the Cobra subframe does. Send us your registration if you are not certain and we will confirm before you order.

What I would actually buy

If it were my money: the Daytona on the Cobra subframe for a car that is still doing daily miles and needs to stay comfortable, because it does most of the job for the least outlay. The Stuttgart if the A6 is genuinely still a company car and you want something built for daily seat time, not just the odd track day. The RRS Low Base if you want more bolster than either Cobra seat and do not mind paying for it, and the Le Mans if track days are becoming a regular thing, not just a once-a-year outing. The Leather Elite is for the A6 that is staying on daily duty long term and the interior needs to match the effort going into the rest of the car.

Every seat above bolts straight to the one frame we sell for this car. If you are between two of these, or between sizes, get in touch with your height and waist measurement and we will talk it through before you spend anything.
