Bigger driver's seat, smaller passenger seat: five pairings that still match

This guide exists because a customer asked us a question we hear a version of every few weeks: “I want a bigger driver’s seat and a smaller passenger seat, but I want them to match as closely as possible. What options do I have?” It is a sensible ask. Bucket seats are sized to the person sat in them, and the driver and passenger of the same car are rarely the same build. Buy two identical seats and one of you ends up perched or pinched.

The good news is that several of the brands we stock make the same seat in more than one shell size, and where they do not, there are pairings close enough that you would have to walk up to the car to spot the difference. Here are the five we would actually put in a car, with honest notes on sizes, looks and price.

  • Five pairings, every seat in stock at the time of writing
  • Three of the five are the same seat in two shell sizes
  • Every seat on this page is side mounted, so both sides of the car fit the same way
  • All prices include VAT

Three ways to make two sizes match

There is no single trick to this. Depending on the brand, the route to a matched pair in two sizes is one of three things, and every pairing below uses one of them.

XL

Same seat, two shell sizes

Sparco's Evo, OMP's WRC-R and Cobra's Suzuka are each made in a standard and a larger shell. Same design, same trim, scaled up. The pair reads as identical from the door.

L

Same range, next size up

The Sparco Sprint and Sprint L are the same family of seat, with the L cut for bigger waists. Order both in black and they match panel for panel.

TRIM

Two models trimmed alike

Mirco offer different shells wearing the same trim. The RTS-2 and GT in matching black suede are the closest cross-model pair we sell, and Mirco take trim requests too.

Sizes first, looks secondPick each seat to the person who will sit in it, then sort the match. A pair that looks right but pinches the driver every journey is the wrong pair. The waist and height figures under each pairing below come from the listings, and if either of you is on a boundary, ask us before ordering.

Sparco Evo XL and Evo: one shell, two sizes

Sparco make the Evo QRT in three shell sizes, and the two ends of the range solve this problem on their own. Both seats come out of the same QRT fibreglass process, wear the same black cloth with the same no-slip panels, and carry the same shape, so from outside the car the pair reads as identical. The difference is scale. The standard Evo is listed for 28 to 32 inch waists and drivers under six foot, while the XL steps up for 36 to 40 inch waists and works for drivers over six foot. The standard shell weighs 6.8kg and the XL 7.7kg, which tells you how much extra seat the bigger occupant is getting. If the driver sits between those two sizes, there is an Evo L in the middle of the range as well.

  • The pair: £1,200.00 inc VAT (£630.00 XL, £570.00 standard)
  • Driver: Evo XL, 36 to 40 inch waist, suits over six foot
  • Passenger: Evo, 28 to 32 inch waist, under six foot
  • Both FIA 8855-1999 approved, both side mounted
  • Identical shells and trim, just scaled

Sparco Sprint L and Sprint: the budget pairing

  • £237.00 Excl. VAT Add to basket
  • From £210.00 Excl. VAT Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page

The Sprint is Sparco’s entry point into FIA approved seats, and the reason it makes this page is the Sprint L, which is the same steel framed, velour trimmed seat cut for 40 to 42 inch waists rather than the standard seat’s 32 to 36. At just over £535 for the pair it is comfortably the cheapest route onto this page, and both are the current versions of the seat, so they match panel for panel. One thing to get right at ordering time: the standard Sprint comes in black, blue or red, but the L comes in black only, so a matched pair means black both sides. Both take a 6 point harness and both are HANS friendly, which for a budget pairing is a lot of box-ticking.

  • The pair: £536.40 inc VAT (£284.40 L, £252.00 standard)
  • Driver: Sprint L, 40 to 42 inch waist
  • Passenger: Sprint, 32 to 36 inch waist, all heights on both
  • Steel shells, velour trim, FIA 8855-1999 on both
  • Order both in black for the match

OMP WRC-R XL and WRC-R: the widest size spread

OMP publish the exact size step on this one, which we appreciate: the WRC-R XL is 50mm taller and wider than the standard seat, and otherwise it is the same perforated fibreglass shell in the same lightly padded Airtex fabric. The standard seat is listed for 32 to 36 inch waists and drivers under six foot. The XL covers 36 to 42 inch waists and works either side of six foot, so between the two shells this pairing covers the widest driver-to-passenger spread on the page. Both get removable split leg cushions and adjustable lumbar support, and both take 4, 5 or 6 point harnesses. The photo at the top of this page is a customer’s Impreza running a matched pair of OMP buckets, which is a fair preview of how this pairing looks fitted.

  • The pair: £1,143.60 inc VAT (£618.00 XL, £525.60 standard)
  • XL is 50mm taller and wider, OMP's published figure
  • Driver: WRC-R XL, 36 to 42 inch waist, over or under six foot
  • Passenger: WRC-R, 32 to 36 inch waist, under six foot
  • Both FIA 8855-1999 approved, Airtex trim on both

Mirco RTS-2 and GT: the closest match of the five

  • From £398.50 Excl. VAT Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page
  • From £444.00 Excl. VAT Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page

The odd one out, because the two seats are different models, and also the pairing we rate as the closest match on this page. The RTS-2 is the roomier cut of the two shells and takes the driver’s side, the GT sits the passenger, and in the editions we stock both wear black suede with a diamond stitched centre panel: the RTS-2 as the Stealth Edition, the GT as the Suede Diamond Edition. Park them side by side and you are looking for the embroidery to tell them apart. Both list for 32 to 36 inch waists, so the size step here is the smallest of the five, and that is exactly why the match is so good. This is the pairing for when the gap between your two occupants is modest. Mirco also take trim requests, so if you want stitch colours tweaked to bring the two even closer, ask and we will get it priced.

  • The pair: £1,011.00 inc VAT (£478.20 RTS-2, £532.80 GT)
  • The closest visual match of the five pairings
  • Black suede with diamond stitched centres on both
  • Both listed for 32 to 36 inch waists, under six foot
  • Both FIA 8855-1999 approved, both side mounted

Cobra Suzuka GT and Suzuka: built to match exactly

The Cobra route works differently, and if the budget stretches it is the strongest answer to the original question. The Suzuka comes as a standard shell for 28 to 32 inch waists and a GT shell for 32 to 36, and every seat is hand trimmed in the UK when you order it. Order the pair together in the same spec and both seats go through the trim shop at the same time, in the same materials, so the match is exact rather than close. On top of that sits Cobra’s Pro-Fit cushion system: base and knee cushions in three depths, backrests in two, so each seat is fine tuned to the person sat in it rather than just being the right shell size. It is the dearest pairing here. If you do not need current FIA papers, the Suzuka RT versions of the same shells knock roughly £150 a seat off, at £577.00 for the GT and £524.10 for the standard.

  • The pair: £1,397.40 inc VAT (£724.20 GT, £673.20 standard)
  • Driver: Suzuka GT, 32 to 36 inch waist, all heights
  • Passenger: Suzuka, 28 to 32 inch waist, under six foot
  • Pro-Fit cushions tailor each seat to its occupant
  • Hand trimmed in the UK, order together for an exact match

Getting both sides bolted down

Every seat on this page is side mounted, and that keeps the fitting story simple. Each side of the car needs its own pair of side mounts plus the fitting frame or runners for your vehicle, and the two sides are handled independently, so mixing shell sizes changes nothing about how the seats go in. What does change from seat to seat is the mount spacing, which is why we always ask what car the seats are going into before anything ships. Tell us the car and both occupants’ sizes and we will put the whole kit together in one go.

If you want harnesses sorted at the same time, the bundles below pair both sizes of the Sparco Evo, OMP WRC-R and Cobra Suzuka with a 4 point harness at a saving over buying separately.

Common questions

Can I mix two completely different brands instead?

You can, but the shells, trim and stitching will not match, which was the whole point of the question. Mount spacing also differs from seat to seat, so each side needs its own mounts either way. If a cross brand pair is the plan for other reasons, ask us and we will tell you honestly how close it will look.

Will the bigger seat actually fit my car?

The wider shell is the one to check, on the driver's side especially. A wide seat in a narrow car between the transmission tunnel and the sill is the most common expensive mistake in this game. Send us the car before you order and we will confirm the fit.

Do both seats use the same fitting kit?

Each side needs its own side mounts plus the frame or runners for your car. The two sides are independent, so a bigger driver's seat does not complicate the passenger side at all. What matters is matching each seat's mount spacing to the right mounts, which we check when you tell us the car.

Are all ten seats FIA approved?

Yes, all ten seats on this page carry FIA 8855-1999 approval. If you compete, check your championship regulations and the homologation date on the specific seat before relying on its papers.

What if we are both on the bigger side?

Then buy the larger shell twice. We list ready made pairs of the big seats: two Sparco Evo XLs at £1,320.00, two Sprint Ls at £568.80 and two WRC-R XLs at £1,236.00, all including VAT.

What I would actually buy

If the brief is the one our customer set, match first and a modest size difference, the Mirco pairing is the one Cameron would pick. The two shells are close to indistinguishable once trimmed, and the price lands mid pack. If the size gap between your two occupants is bigger than one shell step, the OMP WRC-R pairing covers the widest spread on this page, and the pair in the photo up top shows how well it comes together in a real car. And if the budget allows, the Cobra Suzuka pair is the only route here where both seats are hand trimmed together in the same spec, so the match is exact rather than close.

Whichever way you lean, send over the car plus a height and waist measurement for each of you, and we will confirm the pairing, the mounts and the frames before you spend anything.
