The latest Safety Devices Sunbeam roll cage lineup and definitive guide

Safety Devices roll cages

Three cars carry the Sunbeam badge in this range and they have almost nothing in common. Two are small roadsters from the sixties. One is a four door saloon from the seventies. What they share is a cage supplier and not much else.

Which is why the part numbers are worth a look before the prices. The Alpine and the Tiger take the same cage, and the reason is the same reason a Tiger is quick: it is an Alpine with a different engine in it, so the body a cage bolts to is the same body.

  • Six cages across three cars, from £402 to £769
  • The Alpine and the Tiger share one part number, C018
  • Both roadster cages are listed hard top only
  • All six are steel, bolt-in, and listed FIA and MSA approved

The hard top is not a styling choice on this page. Both roadster cages are listed hard top only.

The Sunbeam range at a glance

Six listings, two part numbers, three cars. The Alpine and the Tiger rows are the same cage sold under each car name, which is why the prices match exactly.

Prices are what the listings show today and can move. The approval column states what each listing says rather than our own assessment. Eligibility for a given championship varies by discipline and by year, so check your own regulations first.

Both roadster cages are listed hard top only

Every Alpine and Tiger listing here says hard top only in the product title. That is a fitment condition, and it is the single most important line on this page.

A cage needs structure to tie into at the top. On a soft top roadster there is nothing up there to work with, and the geometry that makes the hard top car work does not translate. So if your Alpine has never had a hard top on it, this is a conversation to have before you order rather than after the pallet turns up.

Soft top car? Ask firstThe condition is in all four roadster listings and it is not a formality. Send us the registration and tell us whether the car has its hard top, and we will tell you what is actually available for it.

Why the Alpine and the Tiger take one cage

C018 covers both. £769 for the full cage, £450 for the rear, and the same figure whichever of the two you buy it under.

The Tiger is the Alpine shell with a Ford V8 in it. The engine bay work was substantial, the passenger compartment was not, and a roll cage bolts to the passenger compartment. So one set of tubes covers both cars and the only thing the two listings really do differently is name the years, 1953 to 1975 for the Alpine and 1964 to 1967 for the Tiger.

Practically, it means you can buy either listing and get the same part. It also means that if one shows a longer lead time than the other, we can usually sort it out for you.

The Avenger is the different one

C001 is the Avenger cage, £667 for the full and £402 for the rear. It is the cheapest cage in the Sunbeam range and it is also the only four door.

A four door saloon gives a cage builder more to work with than a two seat roadster does. There is a proper roof, a B pillar, and a rear bulkhead area to take the backstays, so the cage does not have to be as clever and the price reflects it.

One thing to know if you go looking: the Avenger was sold under more than one badge, and the C001 part number turns up under both. If you find a listing with a different car name and the same part number, it is the same cage.

The rear cages

A rear cage stops behind the front seats. On a small classic that still gets used on the road it is usually the better answer, because the screen rail and the A pillars stay standard and getting in is still getting in rather than a manoeuvre.

On the roadsters the rear cage is £450 against £769 for the full one. On the Avenger it is £402 against £667.

What the design options actually change

Each cage is ordered against a design. On a small roadster the choice matters more than usual, because there is less room to give away.

  • Single fixed diagonal. One brace across the main hoop, the minimum most regulations accept.
  • Single fixed diagonal and harness bar. Adds the shoulder strap anchorage, which is the reason most people fitting a cage to a classic end up here.
  • Cross diagonal and harness bar. More tube and a stiffer shell, and the version most competition classes are written around.
  • Door bars are the big call on a Tiger or an Alpine. They are the best protection in a side impact and they are a genuine obstacle climbing into a small car with the hard top on.

Bolt-in

Mounts on spreader plates through the floor and sills. No welding, nothing permanent, and it can come back out if the car is sold on standard. This is what most road and track day cars run.

Weld-in

Welded straight to the shell, which gives a stiffer car and a better load path into the structure. It wants a motorsport fabricator and the interior usually has to come out. Permanent once it is in.

Pad anything a helmet can reachWe do not stock FIA rated roll bar padding at present, so buy it alongside the cage. In a low roadster the main hoop sits closer to your head than it does in almost anything else, so this one is worth planning at the same time as the cage rather than afterwards.
💬
Not sure which oneTell us whether the car has its hard top

On the Alpine and the Tiger that one answer decides everything else. Cameron works out the fit on these, so send the registration and what you use the car for and we will come back with the part number.

The harness the cage is there to anchor

The harness bar is the part of a cage that does something every time you get in, rather than only in an accident. It puts the shoulder straps at the right height and angle, which the original belt mounts in a sixties roadster were never going to do.

Common questions

Both listings say hard top only, so treat that as a condition rather than a description. Ask us before ordering and we will check what Safety Devices list for a car without one.

Yes. Both are part number C018 and both are the same price in full and rear form. The Tiger is an Alpine with a V8, and the passenger compartment a cage bolts to did not change.

It is a four door saloon, so there is a roof, a B pillar and a rear bulkhead area for the cage to tie into. A two seat roadster gives a cage builder far less to work with.

All six are bolt-in and mount on spreader plates through the floor and sills, so a competent home mechanic can. Dry fit the whole cage before anything is permanent, and check you can still get in and out in a helmet with a harness done up.

Every listing here states FIA approved and MSA approved. Whether that satisfies the specific historic class you want to enter is a question for that championship, because eligibility varies by discipline and changes year to year. Where a cage needs signing off, keep the paperwork with the logbook.

Not in the range we hold. All six are bolt-in. On a classic that is usually what people want anyway, because it does not permanently alter the shell.

The full Sunbeam listing sits in Safety Devices Sunbeam roll cages, and the whole brand range is in Safety Devices roll cages. If the car is not on this page, ask anyway. Safety Devices build for a long list of shells and we can check what exists for yours.
