The latest Safety Devices Rover roll cage lineup and definitive guide
Safety Devices roll cages
Most Rover cage enquiries arrive with the same sentence in them, and it is some version of "it is a Metro". That is where this gets awkward, because we hold two different Metro cages under two different part numbers, and they are the same price, so the price will not tell you which one you are looking at.
There are nine Safety Devices cages here in total, covering four Rover model lines. Eight of them bolt in. One is a welded CDS cage for the Rover 25, and it is the only welded Rover cage we list.
- Nine cages across four Rover model lines, from £437 to £1,025
- Eight bolt-in, one CDS weld-in for the Rover 25
- Every cage is steel and cut for one shell, so the feet and tube runs are already right
- The Metro and the Metro R6 take different cages, N016 against N044

The Rover range at a glance
Nine cages, four cars. Read the part number column rather than the car name, because that is the bit that has to match your shell.

Prices are what the listing shows today and can move. The approval column is what the individual listing states, not our own assessment, and eligibility for your class is worth checking against your own regulations before you order.
The Metro and the Metro R6 do not share a cage
N016 is the Metro cage. N044 is listed for the Metro R6 and the Metro 100. They cost the same, £754 for the full cage and £454 for the rear, so nothing about the money flags up that you are looking at two different parts.
The approval line is where it starts to matter. Our N016 Metro listing is marked FIA approved and MSA approved. The N044 listing for the R6 and the 100 is marked road and track. If the car is going to be scrutineered, that is the difference between a cage you can run and one you cannot.
The Rover 25 is the only one you can have welded
N085-Rover is a CDS weld-in cage for the Rover 25 at £1,025. The bolt-in 6 point for the same car, N083-Rover, is £724, so the welded route is £301 more before you have paid anyone to fit it.
That gap buys a stiffer car and a better load path into the shell, which is what the sharper end of stage rally and circuit racing runs. It also buys you something permanent. The interior comes out, it wants a proper fabricator, and the car is not going back to standard afterwards.
Every other Rover on this page is bolt-in only. So if your class asks for a welded cage and you have a choice of shell, the 25 is the one we can supply for off the shelf.
Bolt-in
Mounts on spreader plates through the floor and sills. No welding, nothing permanent, and it can come back out if the car is sold on standard. This is what most road and track day cars run.
Weld-in
Welded straight to the shell, which gives a stiffer car and a better load path into the structure. It wants a motorsport fabricator and the interior usually has to come out. Permanent once it is in.
The full cages
Five full cages, one per model line plus the welded 25. All five are steel and all five are cut and bent for the shell they are named for, which is what keeps fitting time down on a straight car.

The rear cages
A rear cage is the main hoop, the backstays and the bracing behind the front seats, without the tubes that run forward into the footwells. It is the usual answer on a car that still does road miles, because you keep the dashboard and the A pillar area standard and you are not climbing past a door bar every time you get in.
Across the Rover range the rear cages run £437 to £454, so they sit at roughly 60 per cent of the full cage price.

What the design options actually change
Every one of these cages is ordered against a design option, and the choice is not cosmetic. It changes how much tube is in the car, how stiff the shell ends up, and how easy the car is to get in and out of in a helmet.
- Single fixed diagonal. One brace across the main hoop. It stops the hoop folding sideways and it is the minimum most regulations will accept.
- Cross diagonal and harness bar. More tube, more stiffness, and a proper mounting point for the shoulder straps rather than an anchorage you have improvised.
- With or without door bars. Door bars are the biggest single gain in a side impact and the biggest single nuisance getting in and out.
- The 200 and 216 GTI cage, N035, carries a tunnel brace on every listed design. It is the only Rover cage here that does.
Nine cages across four Rovers is enough for the wrong one to look right on a screen. Cameron works out the fit on these, and the quickest route is to tell us the registration and what you run the car in.
The harness the cage is there to anchor
A cage does more than protect the roof line. The harness bar in it gives you a shoulder strap anchorage at the right height and the right angle, which is something a seat belt mount on a road car cannot do. If you are fitting a cage and keeping the standard belts, you are paying for half of it.

Common questions
Will a Safety Devices Rover cage bolt straight in?
On a straight, standard car, yes. Every cage here is cut and bent for one shell, so the feet land on the standard mounting areas and the tube runs clear the trim. Previous accident damage, a repaired sill or a non-standard interior can all change what is needed, which is why we ask people to dry fit the whole cage before anything is permanent.
Can I fit a bolt-in cage myself?
A competent home mechanic can. It goes in on spreader plates through the floor and sills rather than being welded, so no fabrication is involved. The weld-in cage for the Rover 25 is a different job and wants a motorsport fabricator, because a bad weld on a structural part is worse than no cage.
Does the Metro cage fit the Metro R6?
No. The Metro cage is N016 and the R6 is N044. They are the same price, so nothing on the listing page warns you. Check which car you have before ordering, or send us the registration.
Why is the Rover 25 the only one with a weld-in option?
It is the only Rover in the Safety Devices range we hold a welded cage for. N085-Rover is CDS at £1,025. Everything else here is a bolt-in design.
Is a rear cage enough for competition?
That depends entirely on your class. Some disciplines accept a rear cage, some require a full cage with door bars, and the rules change year to year. Check your own regulations first and then pick on practicality, rather than the other way round.
Does the cage come with the paperwork?
Where a cage needs signing off for competition, the certification normally has to follow the car, so keep it with the logbook. If you are buying for a specific championship, tell us which one and we will check the listed approval against what you need before it ships.
Where to go next
The full Rover listing sits in Safety Devices Rover roll cages, and the whole brand range is in Safety Devices roll cages. If the car is not on this page, ask anyway. Safety Devices build for a long list of shells and we can check what exists for yours.
