AK Cobra Gen 2 Bucket Seat Guide

The AK Cobra Gen 2

A Cobra is one of the few cars where the seat is part of the build rather than a replacement for something a factory fitted. There is no production subframe to design around, which gives you more freedom than almost any car we write about, and one or two things to get right early.

The cockpit is the constraint. It is narrow, which is exactly why Cobra Seats list Narrow Fit versions of the Roadster 7 and the Monaco Sport, and why width is the first measurement to take rather than the last one you think about.

AK Sportscars revised the chassis and the construction for the Gen 2, and no two finished cars are quite alike anyway. I am Cameron, and working out what will physically go into a particular build is the part of this I look after.

A Cobra is built rather than bought, so the seat is part of the build rather than a replacement for something a factory fitted.

Mounting a seat in a Cobra

Because there is no factory seat mounting to match, this is the part that is genuinely yours to decide. Most builds go one of two ways.

Base mount onto runners

A sliding runner kit bolts to the floor or to your own mounting plate, and the seat bolts down onto the runners. It is the simplest route and it keeps fore and aft adjustment, which is worth having if more than one person drives the car.

Mounted straight to the chassis

Plenty of Cobra builders bolt the seat down directly to get it as low as possible and to set the exact legroom they want. That gives you the best position and the least adjustment, so it suits a car built around one driver.

The Endurance runners are listed for this kind of jobEndurance describe their sliding runners as mainly used by people fitting seats into kit cars, or adapting seats to original subframes and equipment. They fit base mounted seats with a 345mm mounting width, so check that against whatever seat you settle on.

Classic bucket seats

For a car that looks like this, a period style seat usually wins. These are the classic shells we stock, and the Roadster 7 in particular comes in a Narrow Fit version made for exactly this sort of cockpit.

Our picks, not the whole listThese are a starting point, not the limit

Cobra builds vary more than production cars do, so the right seat depends on your cockpit width, your ride height and how you sit. Send us the internal width between the sills and we will tell you what fits.

Motorsport bucket seats

If the car sees track days or sprints, a competition shell holds you better than a period seat. The Monaco Sport Narrow and the TRS-X can both mount through the base, which keeps the fitting simple. The Sparco Sprint is a side mount shell, so it needs side mounts and a rail arrangement making up.

Harnesses

LUKE list a three point harness specifically for the AK 427, which is the obvious starting point. Beyond that, the Schroth Lotus II and the Willans Silverstone are the four point belts that suit an open car with a roll hoop behind the seat.

Our recommendationsOn an open car the mounting points decide the belt

What you can run comes down to what there is behind the seat to mount the shoulder straps to, and on a Cobra that is whatever your builder put there. Send us a photo and we will tell you what will work.

Common questions about AK Cobra seats

There is no production subframe for a Cobra, because the seat mounts to the chassis rather than to a factory floor pan. Most builds use a sliding runner kit, or mounts made up to give the exact height and legroom the driver wants. Tell us how yours is built and we will talk it through.

Cobra Seats list Narrow Fit versions of the Roadster 7 and the Monaco Sport, and both are on this page. Measure the internal width between the sills at seat height before you choose, because that figure varies between builds.

A period shell suits a car used on the road and at shows and looks right in a Cobra. A competition shell holds you far better once you are on a circuit. If the car does both, tell us the split and we will point you at the seats that cover it.

Yes. LUKE list a three point harness for the AK 427 Cobra, which is the one to start with. Four point belts from Schroth and Willans are on this page as well.

Yes, with side mounts and a rail arrangement made up to suit the car. It is more fabrication than a base mounted seat on runners, so it is worth deciding early rather than after the seat arrives.

Take the internal width between the sills at the height the seat base will sit, the length from the bulkhead to the pedals, and the height available under the top of the screen. Those three numbers let us rule most of the list in or out straight away.
