The Ford Escort Mk2 remains one of the most popular classic cars for rally builds, fast road projects, and historic motorsport. Its lightweight chassis, rear-wheel-drive layout, and simple mechanical design have made it a favourite among enthusiasts for decades. Whether used for classic rallying, weekend road driving, or full competition builds, the Escort Mk2 continues to be one of the most modified classic Fords around.
One area that nearly every Escort owner ends up upgrading is the seating setup. The original factory seats were never designed for the levels of grip and cornering speeds many of these cars now achieve. Once power, suspension, tyres, and chassis grip start improving, the lack of support from the standard seats quickly becomes obvious.
The challenge is that the Escort Mk2 has a very compact interior. There is limited space between the door cards, centre tunnel, and roll cage bars, which makes bucket seat fitment far more difficult than many people expect. Wider modern motorsport seats often become problematic very quickly, especially once side mounts and harness setups are added into the equation.
This becomes an even bigger issue for broader drivers. Many of the smaller seats that fit nicely inside the Escort simply do not provide enough room internally around the shoulders and upper body. Drivers often end up having to compromise between comfort and physical fitment inside the car.
That is exactly why this recent customer installation stood out to us. They managed to successfully fit a pair of Mirco RTX-7 motorsport seats into their Escort Mk2, which is genuinely impressive considering how large and aggressive these seats are compared to most Escort-compatible options.
The Mirco RTX-7 features very wide wrap-around shoulder supports and a deep motorsport shell, making it one of the biggest FIA seats we have seen fitted into this chassis. Normally, seats this size would create problems with door clearance or roll cage bars, but through careful positioning and fabrication work, the final setup fits far better than expected.
Seeing these seats installed successfully has now given us a much better real-world benchmark for what is physically possible inside the Escort Mk2. For broader drivers especially, this opens up a much more comfortable and supportive seat option than many previously thought possible in these cars.
The Escort Mk2 has a much tighter interior compared to modern performance cars, particularly once a roll cage is installed. Space between the door cards, centre tunnel, and roll cage bars becomes very limited.
This means bucket seat selection is critical. A seat that is too large can quickly create problems with:
For broader drivers, this becomes even more difficult because many compact seats that fit the Escort well internally feel too restrictive around the shoulders and hips.
The Mirco RTX-7 changes that slightly by offering significantly more upper-body room while still just fitting within the Escort Mk2 interior dimensions.
The Mirco RTX-7 is a serious FIA-approved motorsport seat designed for drivers who want maximum support and a more spacious upper-body fit compared to smaller competition seats.
It uses a strong fibreglass shell construction combined with aggressive wrap-around shoulder supports, deep thigh bolsters, and a deep bucketed seating position. This creates a very stable and secure driving position for rallying, track driving, and motorsport use.
What surprised us most during this Escort installation was how well the seat physically fit inside the car despite its large shoulder profile. Normally, seats with shoulders this wide would struggle for clearance around the doors and cage bars, but with careful positioning, the setup works extremely well.
The seat is trimmed in motorsport velour fabric, which provides excellent grip and comfort while helping keep the driver stable during aggressive driving. The removable cushions also make the seat easier to clean and maintain over time.
Because the RTX-7 is FIA approved, it is fully compatible with 6 point harness systems and suitable for motorsport use.
Key features
The Mirco RTX-7 is now one of the largest seats we know can fit inside the Ford Escort Mk2 without modifying the shell of the car itself.
This seat truly maximises the available space inside the Escort chassis. Once installed, the shoulders sit very close to the door cards and window area, leaving very little unused space inside the cabin.
Our customer achieved this fitment by fabricating their own frames and side mounts, allowing the seats to sit as close to the centre tunnel as possible. This created just enough clearance between the seat and door cards for everything to fit properly.
What makes this installation even more impressive is that the seat also clears the roll cage door bars without interference, which is usually one of the biggest problems when fitting wider seats into an Escort Mk2.
For broader drivers, this is a huge advantage. Many seats that comfortably fit the Escort Mk2 are simply too narrow internally, especially around the shoulders. The RTX-7 finally provides an option that caters much better towards larger drivers.
This seat now acts as a real-world fitment benchmark for future Escort Mk2 seat installations.

Driver fitment
Like most fibreglass bucket seats, the Mirco RTX-7 is side-mounted only. It is designed to work with aftermarket universal side mounts and most vehicle-specific subframes where available.
The RTX-7 uses the 345mm wide bolt pattern, which features on most aftermarket seat frames. If your chosen frames use a different bolt spacing, such as the popular Cobra fitting equipment with a 291mm wide pattern, adaptation bars may be required to bridge the difference. The exact setup depends on what mounting equipment is available for your car.
In this particular Escort Mk2, there are no aftermarket vehicle-specific seat subframes available. To solve this, the customer fabricated their own base plates and side mounts to fit the Mirco seats inside their car. For drivers who dont want to fabricate everything, we do have some universal side mounts that work perfectly with the Mirco RTX-7 seat, and from their you have the choice to either side mount the seat onto a fabricated base frame or fabrciate the floor mounting points to side mount the seat stright to the floor. This approach is common in rally builds and offers two major advantages. It saves weight, and it keeps the seating position as low as possible.
One of the best options is our Endurance Multipoint side mount system, which features a large amount of adjustment holes for easier positioning and height adjustment.
If you want a more road-friendly adjustable setup using sliding runners, custom fabrication will still be required. Most owners either fabricate a new subframe or adapt the original Escort seat frames to work with the common 345 mm aftermarket bolt pattern used by the RTX-7.
For motorsport and heavier track use, we always recommend a fixed setup for maximum rigidity and safety.
One of the biggest advantages of the Mirco RTX-7 range is how customisable the seats are.
We offer a large selection of bespoke options that allow customers to build a seat specification that perfectly suits their car and personal style.
You can customise:
Our customer chose the standard velour fabric option because it provides more grip during driving compared to smoother vinyl materials. However, vinyl remains a popular choice for drivers who want easier cleaning and maintenance.
We also have multiple bespoke RTX-7 listings available that showcase previous customer builds, which can inspire your own custom seat design.
A lot of Escort-compatible seats tend to prioritise compact shell dimensions over driver comfort, which often leaves broader drivers with very limited options.
The RTX-7 changes that by offering:
This makes it one of the best options currently available for larger Escort drivers who still want a proper FIA-approved motorsport seat.
The Mirco RTX-7 installation has shown that the Ford Escort Mk2 can fit a much larger seat than many people originally expected, provided the setup is planned correctly.
With careful positioning, fabricated mounting frames, and smart use of the available cabin space, our customer successfully installed one of the widest motorsport seats we have seen fitted into an Escort Mk2.
For broader drivers who previously struggled to find a comfortable FIA bucket seat for these cars, the RTX-7 now gives a proven real-world option that balances support, comfort, and fitment surprisingly well.
This installation also gives us a new practical benchmark for future Escort Mk2 seat recommendations, helping customers better understand the true limits of what fits inside these compact classic interiors.
