In a single seater the harness matters as much as the seat, the helmet or the head and neck restraint. A formula car puts the driver on their back with their legs up, so the belt geometry is different from a saloon, and a harness cut for a saloon leaves you with lengths of webbing you cannot use.
For the 2025 season we have picked five single seater harnesses from OMP, Sabelt, TRS, Willans and Sparco. All five are six point belts approved to FIA 8853-2016. Here is what each one offers, and what to check before you choose.

Why single seaters use a six point harness
Single seater harnesses are made for open wheel cars such as Formula Ford, Formula Vee and hillclimb single seaters. They are six point belts because the two sub straps stop the driver sliding forward under the lap belt under heavy braking or in an impact.
The geometry is different from a saloon. The lap straps come in at a steeper angle, the shoulder straps have a shorter run to the bar behind the seat, and the strap lengths are cut for a tub. Many single seater harnesses also bolt through the seat with fixing plates, because a moulded race seat often has no anchor points behind it in the usual sense.
Most of the harnesses here are HANS specific, which means the shoulder straps are set up for a head and neck restraint and must be used with one. Where FIA harnesses and head and neck restraints are required, check your class regulations for exactly what is needed.
1. OMP Tecnica 2 Formula
OMP’s six point head restraint harness cut for single seaters and prototypes. It has 2 inch shoulder and lap straps, the width that sits correctly on a head and neck restraint yoke, and an aircraft style buckle. Fixings are loop or bolt in, and it comes in black or red. FIA 8853-2016.
2. Sabelt Lightweight Formula
A bolt in six point formula harness with 2 inch shoulder and lap webbing. Lightweight is the webbing grade: lighter than Sabelt’s standard formula harness, but not as light as their Ultralight. It is HANS specific, for series where a HANS is mandatory, and comes in black, blue or red. FIA 8853-2016.
3. TRS Pro Superlite Single Seater
TRS's harness for single seaters such as Formula Ford, Formula Vee and Legends. It bolts through the seat: the shoulder straps use 8mm bolt in fixing plates through the seat back, and the lap and sub straps use 8mm pinch plates.
The Pro specification has 3 inch shoulder straps that taper to 2 inch where they sit on the HANS, 2 inch lap and sub straps, Superlite aluminium adjusters and an aircraft rotary buckle. It is HANS specific, FIA 8853-2016, and comes in a wide choice of colours.
4. Willans Silverstone 623 Single Seater
Willans are a British harness maker, and the Silverstone 623 is their six point single seater belt. It has 2 inch shoulder straps and 3 inch lap straps, an aircraft buckle, and clip in or wrap around fittings. It is FIA 8853-2016 approved and comes in a long list of colours, including British Racing Green. If you race with a HANS, ask us to confirm the right version before you order.
5. Sparco 6 point single seater FHR
Sparco’s six point FHR harness for single seaters. It has 2 inch shoulder and lap straps and an aircraft buckle, the lever type that releases the whole harness in one movement. It is FIA 8853-2016 approved, listed as HANS friendly, and comes in black, blue or red.

Garreth’s advice is to choose on the fitting first: check how the harness mounts against your seat and car, and whether your seat takes the fixing plate size, before you look at weight or colour. Single seater scrutineering varies, and some classes approve the fixing method separately from the harness, so check with your class organiser or scrutineer if you are unsure. Why do single seaters need a six point harness?
The sub straps stop the driver sliding forward under the lap belt, and single seater belts are cut for the reclined driving position.
Are these harnesses FIA approved?
Yes. All five are approved to FIA 8853-2016.
What does HANS specific mean?
The shoulder straps are set up for a head and neck restraint, so the harness must be used with a HANS or FHR device.
Can I use a saloon harness in a single seater?
It is not ideal. Saloon harnesses are cut for a different geometry, and you end up with webbing you cannot use.
How does the TRS Pro Superlite mount?
It bolts through the seat, with 8mm fixing plates for the shoulder straps and 8mm pinch plates for the lap and sub straps.
