The Cobra GT3 Historic, a fixed back bucket seat on a steel frame. Part number COB-GT3-RS.

Four point harness only

The most important thing on this page. The harness slots take a 4 point belt and there is no 6 point routing. If your class requires six points, this is not the seat, and no amount of period looks changes that.

For historic and classic racing where four points are accepted, or for a fast road car, it is not a limitation you will notice.

Built for period appearance

Made for classic and historic racing where how the car looks is part of the specification rather than an afterthought. Black vinyl throughout, integrated headrest, and a choice of anthracite or silver eyelets at checkout.

Road and Track approved. There is no FIA homologation, so check what your class actually requires before ordering.

Before you order

Base mount. Hand trimmed in the UK, so tell us your eyelet choice at checkout and we will confirm it before the seat is built.

Seat only. Tell us the car and we will match a frame; Cobra frames include the sliding runner in the price.

Reclining and road sport seat size guide

Road sport and classic seats are sized the same way as a competition bucket seat, on your waist rather than your chest, but they are cut far more generously. Many are listed as suitable for all sizes, which you will never see on a competition shell.

Base mount or side mount: know the differenceThese seats are still bucket seats, but nearly all of them are base mount: four threaded holes in the underside of the seat, bolting down onto runners or a subframe. Competition shells are the opposite, almost all side mount, fixing through brackets on the sides of the shell. The two systems are not interchangeable, so if you are swapping a competition bucket for a reclining seat or the reverse, your existing brackets and subframe will not carry over. Budget for the right mounting as well, and see our seat mounting and fixing points guide for which is which.

Measure yourself sitting

1Sit on a hard, flat chairFeet flat, back straight against the chair back. No cushion.
2Measure across your hipsThe widest point, side to side, sitting down.
3Take your waist standingAround the natural waist. This is what our seats are listed against.

You have more latitude here than with a competition shell. A reclining seat with a steel frame and foam padding will settle to you over a few hundred miles in a way a fibreglass shell never does.

Waist bands

Band What it is
All sizes suitable Generously cut with a flat or lightly bolstered base. Most of the classic and retro shells sit here
32 to 36 inch The standard adult fit
36 to 38 inch The wider shells, worth starting with if a standard shell has ever felt tight

Nearly all of this range suits all heights, so unless you are unusually tall the height filter will not narrow things much. Start with the waist and the look.

Cobra seat dimensions

Cobra publish a dimension drawing for every seat they make, and these are their figures. Height is floor to the top of the seat with the base flat on the ground, width is across the widest point, depth is front to back. All in millimetres.

Seat Height Width Depth Weight (kg)
Classic (with headrest) 710 480 700 6.0
Classic RS 725 490 760 8.7
Classic RSR 820 480 760 8.5
Roadster SR 570 490 700 6.3
Roadster SS 550 540 740 6.4
Roadster XL 580 525 600 8.0
Roadster 7 750 460 720 7.0
Cub (with headrest) 680 460 650 8.5
Interlagos 725 500 760 7.0
Nogaro Speedster 700 560 710 7.5
Clubman 850 515 630 9.2
Le Mans 820 540 620 13.4
Daytona 865 580 620 13.5
Misano 885 590 620 11.5
Stuttgart 800 520 530 13.2

Every Cobra seat listing on the site also carries these figures, plus the base width, on its Additional information tab, so you can check the exact model and edition you are looking at. For other brands, dimensions are on the listing where the manufacturer publishes them.

Reclining or fixed back

Most of this range reclines, the rest are fixed back. A reclining seat is the obvious choice for a car you drive on the road, for passengers, and for anything with a back seat you need to climb into. A fixed back is lighter, stiffer, and holds you better on track, at the cost of being a nuisance every other day of the week.

If the car does both jobs, reclining is usually the right answer. A fixed back seat in a daily driver wears thin quickly.

How this range differs from a competition bucket seat

Road sport and classic Competition buckets
Fixing Almost all base mount Almost all side mount
Mechanism Mostly reclining Fixed back
Approval Road and track use Mostly FIA approved for competition
Frame Steel frame with foam padding Fibreglass or carbon shell
Sized on Waist, and most take all sizes Waist, in narrower bands

Only a handful of seats here carry FIA approval. If you need an FIA seat for competition, start in the bucket seat range, not this one.

What comes with it

Most of these are sold as the seat only, and some come with sliders. Check which before you order, because a base mount seat still needs runners and a subframe to get into the car. Where sliders are included it is usually the pairing the manufacturer intended, which saves working out the handle width yourself.

Trim, and how it wears

The trim is the part you will actually live with. Vinyl wipes clean and takes sun without fading, which is why it is the usual choice for an open car. Velour and cloth are warmer to sit on in winter and hold their colour indoors. Tartan and houndstooth are period correct for a classic and they are the reason a lot of people buy these seats in the first place.

Alcantara and suede look and feel the best of the lot and are the worst choice for a car that lives outside or gets used in wet overalls.

Tell us the car and what it doesWhether it is a road car, a weekend classic or something that sees track days, plus your waist and the car. The mounting is the part that catches people out and we would rather sort it before you order. Call 0115 989 3488 or email Sales@GSMPerformance.co.uk.

Waist and height bands are from our product data, checked 2 August 2026. Cobra dimensions and weights are Cobra’s own published figures, read 3 August 2026.

Have you written anything about this exact product?
Yes, we have covered this exact product: Customer Question: Fitting Cobra GT3 Historic Seats To A 1972 Alfa Romeo GTV 1750, and Cobra GT3 Historic Bucket Seats Now Available to View In Store. Some of that comes straight from real customer questions, so you are reading answers other buyers actually needed.

Will I fit in this seat?
The maker sizes this seat for drivers under 6ft in height with a 32in to 36in waist. Those are the paper numbers; how a seat actually feels to sit in and climb out of is a different question, and our showroom team sit in these seats every day, so call us with your height and waist and we will give you the honest answer.

What kind of car suits this seat?
Classic and retro vehicles, which is exactly what this shell is designed around. The low-back retro style belongs in a period build, not a modern car, however tempting the weight figure looks. If you are kitting out a modern road or track car, we will point you at the right modern shell instead.

Is this seat FIA approved?
No, this is a road and track day seat rather than a homologated competition seat. For events that require an FIA seat, look at the FIA-approved shells in the range, and ask us if you are unsure what your series needs.

What do I need to fit it to my car?
This is a base-mount seat: it bolts down through its base, the simpler stack for road cars. You will need the car-specific frame, and a sliding runner if you want fore-and-aft adjustment. Our guide on base mount versus side mount walks through the whole stack, and tell us your car and we will quote the full kit.

Does it work with harnesses and a HANS device?
The shell takes 4 point compatible. If you are planning the full seat, harness, and HANS setup, tell us the car and we will spec it end to end.

How do I know it will feel right, not just fit on paper?
Fair question, because makers publish widths and weights, never feel, and two seats with identical numbers can feel nothing alike in the car. We keep the ranges on display in the Nottingham showroom, you are welcome to come and sit in them, and if you cannot get to us, call and describe your build, as the team sit in these seats every day. Our head support measurements guide shows the kind of real-world data we collect.
